Holland Film exists as a one-stop shop that offers
a wide range of services to the global film community. We promote our broad range of homegrown product to buyers worldwide, as well as
keep the global industry updated on all aspects
of the Dutch industry. We match-make international companies with suitable co-production

international producers and talent of the benefits of filming in the Netherlands.
Our promotion of Dutch film is continued at all
of the prestigious festivals within the film calendar, such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Toronto,
and we are a leading voice within European Film
Promotion, which supports the work of all of
Europe’s national film promotional bodies. Our
films continue to pick up hosts of international
awards and we will never tire of reminding the
international film community of Holland’s illustrious record at the Oscars, having picked both

The 2009 Holland Film catalogue gives full and
comprehensive details about the bumper crop of

that have issued from The Netherlands over the

CARMEN OF THE NORTH is inspired by the book, the opera and the 1919 Dutch film
‘Een Carmen van het Noorden’.
For police inspector Joz, intimacy is intrinsically linked with the violent end to
his parents’ relationship. He is therefore insecure when it comes to love. When
he meets the beautiful and tempting murder suspect Carmen, his suspicions
about her intensify – as does his infatuation for her. He puts aside all principles, leaves his fiancée and loses his job. But when he realises that Carmen values freedom more than anything else, he becomes the man he does not want

Pour l’inspecteur de police Joz, l’intimité est intrinsèquement liée à la fin violente de la relation de ses parents. Du coup, il manque d’assurance en matière

An introverted girl opens up in front of her mirror, dreams up a gun and dusk
becomes darkness.
In CREPUSCULE (the moment when dusk fades into night) darkness descends on a
silent and beautiful girl. She enters the city closed and introverted. But alone
in her room, she has no shame in front of the mirror. Working at a gas-station
nobody seems to consider her. Yet an older man does notice her and therefore
embodies a threat. The girl dreams up a gun, dusk becomes darkness, the jazzy
music shifts into something more ominous and the city begins to ooze disquiet.

Une jeune fille introvertie s’ouvre devant son miroir, imagine un pistolet et le

Dans CREPUSCULE, l’obscurité tombe sur une belle fille silencieuse. Elle entre dans
la ville, renfermée et introvertie. Mais, seule dans sa chambre, elle n’a pas de
honte devant son miroir. Elle est pompiste et personne ne semble faire cas
d’elle. Cependant, un homme plus âgé la remarque et incarne donc un danger.
La jeune fille imagine un pistolet, le crépuscule se transforme en obscurité, la
musique jazzy devient plus inquiétante et la ville commence à respirer l’inquiétude.

HAPPY END is the third part of Frans Weisz’s family trilogy. The drama picks up
eighteen years later with the patriarchal Simon mortally ill. The family meets
at his bedside to decide what to do. Somebody mentions euthanasia, but the
family cannot and will not talk about that subject. In order to put his father
out of his pain, Isaac disconnects the tubes, but to everyone’s surprise Simon
doesn’t pass away – he recovers.

flats. The tension is tangible, the languid tranquillity can be disturbed at any

DEW is a film about art and its origins, and the maverick Dutch artist Marc
Mulders.
A controversial artist, Mulders reflects on the seasons in his paintings, but in
his photography and collages he gives an outlet – a countenance – to the clash
between spirituality and the fake reality of the TV world, or the ‘iconclash’ as
he calls it. DEW does not deal in narrative or linger on Mulder’s youth – it is
instead an exploration of his dilemmas, his craft and his place within the artistic tradition. It is therefore a film about engagement and intimacy.

cannot speak Kurdish. But despite bouts of frustration, anger and loneliness –

Who determines the fate of the fox? Man or the fox itself?
When Holland banned fox-hunting in 2002, the wily canine seized its chance
and infiltrated new habitats. This led to consternation among farmers, but also
among many conservationists who, while initially enthusiastic, soon saw how
this predator threatened other protected species such as wading birds.
In 2006, the Dutch government gave way to pressure and legalised fox-hunting
again. So what does this mean? Is man deciding the fox’s fate or will its
instinct for survival prove stronger than people may suspect?

On the island of Tiengemeten wild nature has been allowed to flourish.
The island of Tiengemeten was once reclaimed from the sea and reshaped to
provide fertile agricultural land. In the 1990s a decision was made to let the
vagaries of nature loose on the island.
The remodelling process began in 2006. Asphalt roads were removed, creeks
were dug, trees were excavated, new trees were planted and dikes were
heightened or levelled. The film shows the changing landscape.

In the heart of the Middle East a new modern city, Dubai, is growing rapidly.
Although Sheik Mohammed’s brain-child has not evolved from the express
needs of its inhabitants, no city can originate and exist without citizens.
Through snapshots of the lives of many residents the film goes beyond the
city’s shiny façade, and we gradually discover that Dubai is nothing other than
an optical illusion, one completely devoid of any homely sense.
