Team Profile - Asset Allocation Team
“We seek to control risk and pursue optimal returns in our portfolios through dedicated oversight and a well-defined process.” Alain Bergeron Mackenzie Asset Allocation Team Lead MACKENZIE ASSET ALLOCATION TEAM 12B 6 18+ MEMBER TEAM YEARS OF PENSION INVESTING $ AUM What we do and how we do it The Mackenzie Asset Allocation Team uses a number of tools that aim to manage risk, grow wealth and provide income for investors in Symmetry Portfolios, Mackenzie Investments’ pension-style managed solutions, as well as select multi-managed, balanced funds and monthly income portfolios. Led by Alain Bergeron, the team is fully dedicated to asset allocation and uses a disciplined, rigorous approach that strives to reduce risk and add value on behalf of investors. Depending on the mandate, Bergeron and his team oversee to varying degrees strategic asset allocation, risk management, manager selection and daily portfolio monitoring. Among managed asset programs, this dedicated approach provides an important advantage over other programs managed by investment committees that meet only infrequently or lack dedicated risk-management capabilities. On designated balanced funds, the team continually monitors and adjusts the equity and fixed income weightings, which adds a layer of asset allocation oversight that complements security selection and aims to enhance risk-adjusted returns. On the monthly income portfolios, the team invests across the income spectrum to enhance yield and employs hedging strategies to mitigate downside risk. the process Within the Symmetry Portfolios, the team seeks to optimize risk-adjusted returns through asset allocation oversight, careful manager selection and strategic risk management. It also incorporates an additional level of risk management by continuously monitoring the entire portfolio to maintain diversification. The use of the term or phrase “pension [or ‘institutional’] style investing” (“phrase”) should not be misconstrued as a claim of compliance with the Pension Benefits Standards Act of Canada. The phrase used in respect of Mackenzie Investments’ Symmetry Portfolios refers to its selective use of pools. Pools are simply separate accounts, or mandates, in which portfolio managers are provided with guidelines that complement other mandates within a larger long-term portfolio. In the case of Symmetry Portfolios, Mackenzie Asset Allocation Team ask portfolio managers to invest within specific guidelines exclusively for Symmetry Portfolios. Examples of Symmetry Portfolio guidelines may be: no cash held in a portfolio; Canadian equity securities only; utilize a consistent value bias and a threshold on market cap.
