Ambassadrices du prestige français dans le monde, les cristalleries de SaintLouis ont toujours attiré artistes, architectes, illustrateurs et designers de renom
pour conjuguer patrimoine, héritage et création.
Initiés par Saint-Louis au milieu du XIXème siècle grâce à la technique ancestrale du millefiori, les presse-papiers font chaque année l’objet de créations inédites dont les thèmes et les décors résultent de la fantaisie et de la dextérité de
maîtres-verriers spécialisés. Fleuron de Saint-Louis, l’atelier de presse-papiers
réunit en effet tous les savoir-faire condensés au cœur d’un objet iconique qui
fascine autant qu’il interroge. Pour cette collection 2013, Saint-Louis invite une
artiste à se pencher simultanément sur trois pièces, de manière à repousser toujours plus loin le champ des possibles, tant techniques qu’esthétiques. Ainsi
s’ouvre un nouveau chapitre dans l’histoire du presse-papiers. Désormais complice de la création contemporaine, il devient objet d’art à part entière. Claire Le
Sage imagine un trio narratif qui transporte dans un monde imaginaire enchanteur, entre air et eau. L’occasion de laisser vagabonder son esprit pour lui offrir
une parenthèse merveilleuse, loin des trépidations de la vie moderne.
Outre Boréal, Cyclades et Notus signés Claire Le Sage, la collection 2013 propose la Coccinelle et le Serpent, nés de l’imagination du bureau de création
Saint-Louis. Réalisés en éditions limitées, les presse-papiers sont numérotés,
millésimés et certifiés.
Ambassadors of French prestige the world over, the Saint-Louis crystalworks
has always attracted renowned artists, architects, illustrators and designers
whose work combines tradition, heritage and creativity. Saint-Louis designed its
first paperweights in the middle of the 19th century using the ancestral millefiori
technique. Every year, the imagination and dexterity of our specialist master
glassmakers give rise to original new creations with fantastical themes and settings. The paperweights workshop is the jewel in the Saint-Louis crown and features various areas of expertise distilled at the heart of a single, iconic object that
evokes both fascination and wonder. For its 2013 collection, Saint-Louis invited
an artist to work on three pieces simultaneously, challenging the boundaries of
the technically and aesthetically possible while signing a new chapter in the history of paperweights. As new allies of contemporary creation, they have become
objets d’art in their own right. Claire Le Sage has imagined a narrative trio that
transport us to an enchanting, imaginary world midway between air and water,
where the spirit can roam freely, happily liberated from the frenzy of modern life.
In addition to Boréal, Cyclades and Notus imagined by Claire Le Sage, the 2013
collection is completed by Coccinelle and Serpent designed by the Saint-Louis
creative team. Released as limited editions, all the paperweights are numbered,
dated and certified.

Habillé d’émail et de cristal flanelle à taille grain de riz,
le presse-papiers se fait galet et appelle un plongeon
dans une nébuleuse devenue aquatique par la magie des maîtresverriers. Un jeté d’étoiles bleues et blanches semble affleurer, comme
poussé par l’ondulation d’un tapis sous-marin composé de baguettes
saphir, outremer et marine exclusivement posées à la pincette.
A l’instar des Cyclades, l’objet offre une constellation perpétuelle,
du bleu infini de la mer Egée à la blancheur des églises
suspendues entre ciel et mer.
Adorned with enamel and rice-cut flannel crystal,
this pebble-like paperweight invites onlookers to plunge into an
aquatic nebula fashioned by the magic of our master glassmakers.
A sprinkling of blue and white stars emerge on the surface, as if
buoyed by an undulating seabed composed of sapphire, outremer and
navy rods, all individually positioned using tweezers. Like the
Cyclades themselves, this object offers a perpetual constellation
to admire, from the infinite blue of the Aegean Sea to the pure
whiteness of the islands’ cliff-top churches.

Capturée dans un calice hypnotique dessiné par 28 baguettes
améthyste, une fleur aquatique chartreuse s’ouvre pour dévoiler le
relief d’un pistil de baguettes améthyste. La virtuosité de l’artisan
suggère ici les frémissements des courants marins qui animent une
flore sublimée. Notus, le vent du sud de la mythologie grecque,
semble capturé dans ce presse-papiers dont la profondeur résulte
d’une toute nouvelle technique.
Caught in a hypnotic chalice outlined by 28 amethyst rods,
a chartreuse-green water flower opens to unveil the contours of its
pistil in amethyst rods. The virtuosity of the craftsman suggests
quivering sea currents swirling amidst a stunning backdrop
of marine flora. Notus, the south wind in Greek mythology, seems to
have been imprisoned in this paperweight, which owes its amazing
depth to a brand new technique.

Une multitude de cheveux d’ange caressés par une myriade
de bulles en apesanteur offre un spectacle magique : celui d’un fond
tapissé de baguettes chartreuses aux teintes apaisantes qui
s’habille de fines baguettes torsadées blanches pour créer un ballet
aquatique au fascinant ondoiement. Saint-Louis invente un écho
merveilleux à la légendaire aurore boréale.
A multitude of angel hair caressed by a plethora of ethereal bubbles
make for a truly magical vision. The base, lined with chartreuse
rods in soothing colours, showcases an aquatic ballet of twisted slim
white rods with a fascinating undulating movement.
This Saint-Louis creation offers a marvellous echo of the
legendary aurora borealis.

Pour l’année 2013, placée sous le signe du serpent dans
l’astrologie chinoise, la manufacture imagine un reptile hypnotique.
Réalisé selon la technique du millefiori dans un subtil dégradé de
bleus piqués de couleurs vives, le reptile appelle la narration :
démon tentateur de la Bible, animal vénéré en Asie (les Japonais
comparent une belle femme à un serpent), le serpent Saint-Louis
captive par son regard fascinant et l’harmonie des fleurs sur
lesquelles il ondule.
The crystalworks designed this hypnotic reptile in honour
of 2013, the year of the snake in Chinese astrology. Created using the
millefiori technique in a subtle range of blues and bright colours, the
creature calls a thousand stories to mind, such as the tempting Devil
the Bible. It is also the venerated animal of Asia, with the Japanese
comparing beautiful women to snakes. The fascinating gaze of this
Saint-Louis reptile captivates onlookers, as do the harmonious
flowers on which it gently sways.

« Où nous emmène la coccinelle ? » À chaque regard, la question
se pose tant le charmant insecte semble voler dans ce kaléidoscope de
couleurs dont il est le héros. La technique millénaire du millefiori
dessine un bouquet chatoyant, véritable tapis de fleurs dont
l’explosion de couleurs entraîne vers d’infinis tableaux oniriques.
“Where is the ladybird taking us?” This is the question
we ask ourselves every time we look at this paperweight, whose
charming winged heroine seems to fly tirelessly around her
colourful kaleidoscope. The ancient millefiori technique has been
used to create a scintillating bouquet of flowers, a genuine carpet of
blooms whose colourful explosion beckons us into an infinity
of dreamlike paintings.

CLAIRE LE SAGE

For designer Claire Le Sage, the exercise of creating a paperweight is a challenge
she first addressed over fifteen years ago. In 1996, she participated in the exhibition entitled “150 Years of Paperweights by the Saint-Louis Crystalworks” at the
Musée de la Poste in Paris, for which she produced three round paperweights
specially for the occasion, including a very memorable honeycomb piece. Thanks
to the success of these items, the doors of the crystalworks were flung open to her
and she went on to design several vases there, including the Chartres and
Bloomy, as well as glasses and table decorations, and, of course, a host of paperweights. In 2007, Claire Le Sage decided to split her time between Le Studio, her
own creative structure where she produces her own designs, and the French
National School for Industrial Creation (Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création
Industrielle, ENSCI), where she teaches and was once a student herself. Her
desire to create paperweights remains firmly intact: following her hypnotic
“Oursin” creation in 2012, which showcased Saint-Louis’ impressive expertise
once again, Claire Le Sage has perfected her vision of this object through the
creation of not one, but three new paperweights. She has given rise to a fascinating trio, in which this iconic Saint-Louis item has evolved technically and formally to reflect current aesthetic codes.

Pour Claire Le Sage, l’exercice du presse-papiers est un défi lancé depuis plus de
quinze ans. En 1996, la créatrice participe déjà à l’exposition « 150 ans de création de presse-papiers des cristalleries Saint-Louis » au Musée de la Poste, à
Paris, avec trois boules presse-papiers spécialement créées pour l’occasion,
dont un nid-d’abeilles mémorable. Ce succès lui ouvre sur le champ les portes
de la cristallerie où elle imagine de nombreux modèles de vases (Chartres,
Bloomy...) de verres, d’objets de table et, naturellement, une multitude de
presse-papiers. À partir de 2007, Claire Le Sage décide de partager son temps
entre Le Studio, sa propre structure de création et d’auto-édition d’objets et
l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle (ENSCI), où elle a fait
ses classes et enseigne désormais. L’envie de presse-papiers ne la quitte pas
pour autant. Au contraire. Après « L’Oursin » hypnotique présenté en 2012 qui
démontre à nouveau les formidables savoir-faire de Saint-Louis, Claire Le Sage
renforce son regard sur l’objet avec, pour la première fois, la création non plus
d’un, mais de trois presse-papiers.
Trio fascinant par lequel l’objet iconique de Saint-Louis évolue techniquement
et formellement, faisant écho aux codes esthétiques actuels.
