Spiritual Guide and Leader, Tijaniyya Sufi Order
His Excellency Ambassador Cheikh Ahmad Tidiane Ali Cisse (b. 1955) is one of the world’s most influential
Muslim leaders. He is the spiritual leader of the Tijaniyya Sufi order and is based in Senegal. The Tijaniyya is
one of the largest Sufi orders in Africa, and its leader commands a following of close to 100 million people
in over 40 countries, who see him as their spiritual guide and give him allegiance and fealty.
Cheikh Tidiane is the Imam of the Grand Mosque in Medina Baye, Senegal, which is one of the key
positions of Islamic leadership in West Africa. In 2011, he was named the 26 th most influential Muslim in
the world by the respected survey of “The 500 Most Influential Muslims” published annually by the Royal
Institute of Strategic Studies in Amman, Jordan.
The Tijaniyya is a Sufi order founded by Ahmad al Tijani Hasani, an Algerian, in the late 18th century. As the
spiritual leader of the Tijaniyya, Cheikh Tidiane Cisse is considered to be the bearer of a spiritual inspiration
called the Fayda Tijaniyya, giving him authority to carry on the teachings of Ahmad al Tijani. Because of this
position, some Tijani Muslims refer to Cisse as the reviver of the Sunnah, the way of the Prophet
Muhammad .
Cheikh Tidiane serves as a Special Missions Ambassador to the government of Senegal and is a graduate of
the ancient Al Azhar University Seminary in Cairo, Egypt where he completed his studies with distinction.
Cheikh Tidiane travels extensively and is a key voice of moderation and balance amongst Muslims and
people of other faiths especially in his native Africa. He has been one of the key advisors to the Radical
Middle Way.
