or many years traditional super group De Dannan were the forerunners in
the Irish traditional music world but after 33 years, 14 albums, the group
disbanded in 2003.
In August 2009, original founding member and world famous fiddle player
Frankie Gavin unleashed a new De Dannan which in his own words «reflects a
De Dannan of the 21st century”! Frankie Gavin, who himself has performed
with a whole host of musical luminaries from Stéphane Grappelli to the Rolling Stones, and is considered the world’s greatest Irish fiddle player, said of
the band’s planned tour of the United States.

ondé en 1973 par Frankie Gavin, De Danann est un des groupes influent
du renouveau de la musique irlandaise. Le violoniste Frankie Gavin, le guitariste Alec Finn associés au joueur de bodhran Johnny McDonagh et au joueur de banjo Charlie Piggot ont formé ce groupe particulièrement dynamique et enregistré leur premier album en 1975.
Au même titre que les groupes Planxty et Bothy Band, De Danann a contribué
largement à donner une dimension internationale à la musique traditionnelle
irlandaise. Comme Paddy Moloney (des Chieftains), Frankie Gavin a tenté toutes sortes d’expériences musicales. Avec De Dannan ou en solo, il a ouvert la
musique irlandaise à d’autres styles musicaux. Des enregistrements avec des
artistes aussi divers que les Rolling Stones, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grapelli
ou Andy Statman ! Avec Sharon Shannon, ils enregistrent, avec le guitariste Jim
Murray et le flûtiste Michael McGoldrick l’album « Tunes» paru en 2005….une
interprétation remarquable d’airs traditionnels et de compositions originales.
Après une pause du groupe De Dannan de quelques années et une carrière solo,
Frankie Gavin remonte le groupe mythique marqué par la sortie de leur album.
