E
n corps à corps est une installation
vidéo comportementale et interactive. Deux
corps féminins jouant dans l’eau avec des voiles,
se cherchent, se caressent, se perdent... en
fonction des déplacements du spectateur dans
l’espace situé devant l’écran. Le rapport entre
la vidéo projetée et le spectateur est déterminé
par la position de ce dernier face à l’écran. Trois
étapes sont identifiables. 1ère étape : entrée du
spectateur. Il découvre les images de voiles en
mouvement dans l’eau et quelques détails de
corps. 2ème étape : au fur et à mesure que le
spectateur se rapproche de l’écran, les images
de la vidéo changent. Arrivé au milieu de l’espace
de projection, le film montre deux corps féminins
qui se caressent. 3ème étape : si le spectateur
décide de s’approcher encore plus de l’écran, il
rentre dans une zone dans laquelle les images
deviennent floues ou indéchiffrables.
L’installation
propose
ainsi
une
représentation et une exploration de la relation
à l’autre, dans laquelle l’engagement du corps
joue une part centrale. Du non-engagement,
à l’engagement, puis à la fusion, le spectateur
peut parcourir librement l’espace symbolique du
discours du film, en déambulant dans l’espace
physique de sa représentation.
En corps à corps is an interactive and
behavioural video installation. Two feminine
bodies play with veils in the water, seeking each
other, caressing each other or drifting away,
according to the spectators’ movements in front
of the screen. The video unfolds indefinitely,
reproducing – via the theme sequence of the
film – the state of the relationship between the
spectators and the projected images. Indira Cruz
is here questioning relationships with others
through a study on seduction, on how people deal
with their own bodies, distance and intimacy. The
spectators influence the projected video via their
position in front of the screen. It works in three
stages. 1st stage : spectators enter. They see
images of veils moving in the water and close-up
details of a body. 2nd stage : as spectators come
closer to the screen, the images change. As they
reach the centre of the projection area, the film
shows two feminine bodies caressing each other.
3rd stage : if spectators decide to move closer to
the screen, they enter an area in which images
become blurred or indecipherable.
The installation is thus a representation and
exploration of relationships with others, in which
physical commitment plays a central part. From
non-commitment to commitment, and to fusion,
spectators are able to explore the symbolic space
of the film’s discourse while strolling about the
physical space in which it is shown.

Cruz
est née en 1975 à
Bogota en Colombie.
Elle y a vécu jusqu’à
l’age de 21 ans et a
quitté la Colombie
après deux années
d’études aux Beaux Arts. Elle arrive
à Paris en 1996, où elle vit et travaille
depuis lors. Elle reprend des études
d’arts plastiques à l’Université Paris
1 Sorbonne, qu’elle mène jusqu’au
DEA. Ayant commencé par la photo,
elle s’oriente vers la vidéo et mène
un travail de plasticienne depuis
1999. Elle organise également des
expositions dans le domaine de
l’image en général et de la vidéo en
particulier.
Indira Cruz was born in 1975 in
Bogota, Colombia. She lived there until
she was 21, studying at Beaux Arts for
two years. She came to Paris in 1996,
where she has worked and lived ever

degree. Initially working with photos,
she moved towards video and has
been working as a visual artist since
1999. She also organises exhibitions
focusing on images in general and
video in particular.
