Between the third and fourth floor, on the north wing, in the
Gunner Muir Room, is Sir John A.’s desk11. It is a partner desk
made of walnut, and was used by Sir John A. and his clerk.
An interesting feature is the cubby holes behind the locking
cabinet with the annotations of the different wards and dayto-day business. The barriers are located around this desk to
protect the original leather top made with hand embossed

John A. Il s’agit d’un bureau double face fait de noyer qui servait à
Sir John A. et à son secrétaire. Un détail digne de mention est la
série de petits casiers de rangement dissimulés dans le cabinet
verrouillable qui comportent des annotations identifiant les
divers quartiers et affaires journalières. Une barrière placée autour
du bureau sert à protéger le dessus original du meuble qui est en

l’Hôtel de ville de Kingston, Site historique national
Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John Alexander Macdonald, grew
up in Kingston where he attended school, initiated his famously
busy law practice and was a local alderman. The City of Kingston is
pleased to share a small part of its proud history of Sir John, with
an array of important artifacts displayed throughout City Hall.
To the left of the first floor entrance of City Hall, in the south wing,
is a meeting room named in Sir John A.’s honour.
Le premier des premiers ministres du Canada, Sir John Alexander
Macdonald, a grandi à Kingston. Il y a fait ses études, y a ouvert son
cabinet d’avocat où il est vite devenu très affairé et y a exercé les
fonctions de conseiller municipal. Par le biais d’une importante
collection d’artefacts exposés d’un bout à l’autre de l’hôtel de ville,
la Ville de Kingston a l’honneur de partager des éléments de l’histoire
distinguée de Sir John A.

The photograph1 on the east wall is of Sir John A. in his later years
when he resided at Earnscliffe in Ottawa. It was presented to T.J.
Rigney in 1928 by Howard Ferguson, then Premier of Ontario. /

vie, lorsqu’il résidait à Earnscliffe, dans la ville d’Ottawa. C’est Howard

The small statuette of Sir John A., made of plaster and dipped in
bronze, was created by Canadian sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert
(1850-1917) is signed by the artist on the lower right. / La petite

bronze, est l’oeuvre du sculpteur canadien renommé Louis-Philippe
Hébert (1850-1917). Elle porte la signature de l’artiste au coin inférieur

The conference table3 is the original table used in the early council
meetings before and during the construction of this building. Sir
John A. would have sat at this table many times and enjoyed many
political debates when he was an alderman. /

premières réunions du conseil municipal avant et pendant la
construction de l’hôtel de ville. Sir John A. s’est assis à cette table bien
des fois, savourant plusieurs débats politiques à l’époque où il était
conseiller municipal.
On the second floor, in the south wing, is Memorial Hall. /
Au deuxième étage de l’aile sud se trouve une salle
commémorative appelée Memorial Hall (Salle du Souvenir).
MEMORIAL HALL/SALLE DU SOUVENIR
In 2006 the City of Kingston helped to acquire a portrait4
presumed to be Isabella Clark Macdonald (1811-1857), first
wife of Sir John A. Now part of the collection of the Agnes
Etherington Art Centre, this portrait was painted by an unknown
artist in the early 1840s. Isabella had four sisters—Margaret, Maria,
Ann and Jane—and she married Sir John A. in 1843 while he was
still a lawyer and alderman working in Kingston. / En 2006, la Ville
de Kingston a participé à l’acquisition d’un portrait4 qui est
vraisemblablement celui d’Isabella Clark Macdonald (1811 - 1857),
la première épouse de Sir John A. Faisant désormais partie de la
collection du Centre d’art Agnes Etherington, cette peinture, réalisée

Inside Memorial Hall, at the far right, is a life-size portrait5 of
Sir John A. painted by William Sawyer (1820-1889). Sawyer,
a renowned artist, was commissioned by City Hall in 1863 to
paint the portrait. It hangs alongside other portraits of past
Kingston mayors. It is an invaluable work of art, and is the most
reproduced picture of Sir John A. / Au fond à droite de la Salle

Kingston. These are reproductions from 1891 newspaper articles which depict him “laying in state” in Memorial Hall6-7, the
funeral procession going up Princess Street8-9 and his gravesite
