Essential oils and cosmetics Used since the dawn of time and documented by botanists, doctors and other scientists around the world, natural plant extracts, more commonly called essential oils & floral waters, are now experiencing a particular keen interest from the general public. It is nevertheless imperative to study and research how to use these extracts properly to ensure good and safe formulas for cosmetics and personal care product developments. When formulating cosmetics incorporating natural extracts developers are inspired as much by nature as by science! Nature, in fact, offers an extraordinary variety of plant sources having molecules well known for their therapeutic properties in short, 'active‘ substances to relieve and repair all kinds of ailments. There are no registered and defined French rules yet for the specific usage of EO in cosmetic products. Some provisions governing such usage are nevertheless available. The European Council, for example, has published no less than three volumes of specific “recommendations” on the use of plants and herbal preparations labelled as ingredients in cosmetic products. For the purpose of this brochure, we took care not to include, in our list, plants and plant extracts that are not recommended by the French ANSM (sanitary authority) and the European Council. Definition: Essential Oil (EO) According to the work of the French AFSSAPS (now ANSM since 2011) Definition very similar to ISO 9235, standard - Adopted by the European Commission of Pharmacopoeia “Fragrant product, a generally complex composition obtained from a botanically defined raw plant material, either by steam distillation, dry distillation or by a mechanical method without combustion. The essential oil is usually separated from the aqueous phase by a physical method involving no significant change in its composition. "[* 1] EO is distilled from raw plant material that can be fresh, withered, dried, whole, except fruits of the genus Citrus which must only be pressed when fresh. The EO is defined as a 100% pure and natural extract. the specific distillation of the flower heads. The aqueous extracts of aromatic materials are numerous and often have the same name as the corresponding EO; INCI differentiates them by adding oil or water to the botanical name. HY/FW are steeped with the same aromatic molecules of the EO, with a higher dilution of course, however, they do not necessarily have the same therapeutic properties. There are nevertheless advantages to their usage in cosmetics: better tolerance, including for the mucous membranes, much less contraindications and, since they are water soluble, the formulation is simplified, eliminating the need of a specific carrier. Known activities of natural extracts Different government agencies, scientists and health officials offer a glossary of properties and / or therapeutic activities inherent to each natural extract. Research institutes and other academies specialized in the study of plants for medical or therapeutic usage identify and document these properties using chemical analysis to establish monographs. List of activities of some of our natural extracts The table that follows is purely informative, intended for formulators and cosmetics developers wishing to integrate EO and other natural aromatic raw materials in their products. We have listed and ranked only four aspects of properties and activities which are of interest in the beauty industry: • • • • perfuming, the feeling of comfort, skin aging clean skin. We have also identified body, hair and oral hygiene product categories (see the last 3 columns under the heading ZONE+) so to point out properties that may be of interest for those formulations. Definition: Hydrolate HY or Floral Water FW The Hydrolate is an aqueous extract obtained as a byproduct of the distillation of fresh plant parts - Floral Water indicates As a supplier of Aromatic Raw Materials (Essential Oils, Hydrolates & Floral Waters) ELIXENS France offers high quality natural extracts. With our agricultural productions right at the source and proud of our commitment to ORGANIC and ORGANIC-SOLIDARITY, we offer full traceability and certified extraction processes. Our aromatic raw materials are used primarily for their organoleptic characteristics, formulation of fragrances and flavors. At the same time, many of these natural materials are also known to have interesting properties for cosmetic use. With this brochure, we propose an informative documentation, identifying those known properties for a list of some of our natural extracts. This list is based primarily on recent and accepted scientific documentary sources, without having the ambition to establish any instruction booklet for cosmetic formulations.
