According to the Bologna higher education system, competencies should be at the core of the curricula
offered by our Schools and Universities: the Amsterdam FESET seminar will focus on the wide range
of competencies of the professionals of social education (socio-educational care workers, social
educators, social workers, social pedagogues ... according to the different countries in Europe, the
context and setting of their activities).
This will be the occasion to provide some answers to the following questions:
What is meant by competencies within social professions?
Are the curricula that we teach our students constructed on explicit professional competencies?
How teachers translate competencies to be acquired in curricula and programmes?
What balance between disciplinary approaches and competencies-founded approaches in a programme?
How do we bring into the education of our students the competencies underlying social education?
Which competencies are emphasized in different social professions according to the countries?
What about fundamental research on competencies in social work?
Which methods are available to identify competencies?
Are there some shared competencies in different settings and various practices in social education?
How can research about competencies be “tuned” to requirements of practitioners of social education
and to the development of social welfare?
Are graduates in these fields merely “competent” or responsive, pro-active skilled professionals?...
Teachers, practitioners and researchers are welcome in Amsterdam Seminar 2008 and warmly invited to
submit papers to be presented in the different workshops.

By plane
Cheap flights from within Europe and direct flights from outside Europe are readily available,
serving Amsterdam airport Schiphol – Europe’s fourth largest and located just a few
kilometres from the city centre (www.schiphol.com).
By train
Train travel to Amsterdam is a popular option within Europe with Inter City connections to
and from Brussels, London, Paris, Hamburg and Berlin (each 6 hours) as well as Belgium and
Frankfurt (3 hours). All other destinations in Holland are located no more than 2.5 hours
from Amsterdam by rail. Rail passes and other discounts are widely available and reservations
are highly recommended (www.ns.nl).
By car
Arriving by Car is fairly straightforward, however driving and parking in the city are not.
The A10 Ring (Ringweg) encircles the city and receives all major freeways. Drivers from the
north should exit the Ringweg at the Ij-Tunnel Exit for quick access to the city centre. Exit
at Jan van Galenstraat if coming from the east and at Nieuwe Utrechtseweg from the south
and west.
Accommodation:
A list of hotels will be provided the FESET Website: www.FESET.org. All participants are
kindly requested to book by themselves their accommodation.
