La galerie Jeanrochdard est heureuse de présenter inauthentics, la première exposition personnelle en France de l’artiste américain, résidant à Londres, Luke Dowd.
La nouvelle série de peintures de Luke Dowd emprunte ses sujets aux éléments qui
se situent à portée de main dans son atelier : la fenêtre, le sol, un écran d’ordinateur,
un croquis d’atelier, des bandes de papier et un vieux catalogue d’art. Par de légères
transformations de ce matériel brut, entre figuration et abstraction, Dowd introduit
dans son travail des références indirectes à des courants historiques tels que l’expressionisme abstrait, le pop art ou le minimalisme. Ses oeuvres, qui associent les techniques de la sérigraphie et de la peinture au spray, sous-tendent les notions d’origine
et d’authenticité.
Dowd s’intéresse à la question de la reproduction, au traitement du geste et de son
support, composé d’un châssis (la grille) et d’une toile (le tissu). L’artiste travaille essentiellement sur toile, explorant les possibilités techniques que permet le dispositif
de l’impression sérigraphique sur un tel support. Luke Dowd envisage ce procédé
comme une pratique gestuelle, un véritable outil de peinture. La toile est tendue sur
un châssis léger et sa surface est plane. C’est sur cette surface, impénétrable, scintillante et désorientante, que l’oeuvre existe.
Luke Dowd est né à New York, il vit et travaille à Londres. Il est diplômé du Chelsea College of Art & Design de Londres. Dowd a participé à de nombreuses expositions internationales parmis lesquelles des expositions personnelles chez Rod Barton, Londres; Tony Wight Gallery, Chicago; Galerie Jacky Strenz, Frankfurt; HOTEL,
Londres; The Breeder, Athènes ainsi qu’une exposition avec Giles Round à la Whitechapel Project Space à Londres.

Galerie Jeanrochdard is pleased to present inauthentics, the first solo show in France
by London-based American artist Luke Dowd.
Luke Dowd’s new group of paintings use close at hand source material: the window,
the floor, a computer screen, a studio doodle, strips of paper and an old art catalogue.
Working between figuration and abstraction and through slight transformations of
the source material, Dowd makes oblique references to art historical modes such as
abstract expression, pop art and minimalism. Underlying these images, which combine screen-printing and spray-paint, are notions of origin and authenticity.
Dowd is concerned with the mediation of touch, the replication and processing of gesture and the support: the stretcher (grid) and the canvas (fabric). He works on canvas, employs printmaking processes and contingent applications techniques. Dowd
produces the screens and does the printing in his studio. He uses screen-printing as
a gestural tool, a painting tool. The canvas is stretched on to lightweight stretchers
and the surface is flat. There is a desire for the work to be thin, to physically sit on the
surface - but also to shimmer, to invite and deflect.
Luke Dowd was born in New York City and lives and works in London. He received
his MFA from Chelsea College of Art & Design, London. Dowd has participated in numerous international exhibitions including recent solo shows at Rod Barton, London;
Tony Wight Gallery, Chicago; Galerie Jacky Strenz, Frankfurt; HOTEL, London; The
Breeder, Athens and a two-person exhibition with Giles Round at Whitechapel Project Space in London.
