SOME AMERICANS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL We participate in the exchange with the American students from Vermont and we welcomed them in Langres from Monday 18 th April to Wednesday 20th April. There were only Mail ::ce.0520021R@ac [email protected]@ac-reims.fr 11 American students involved because the trip to France is very expensive for them. Each Tel : 03.25.87.09.95. 03.25.87.09.95.Fax Fax ::03.25 03.25.87.14.87. 03.25.87.14.87. French family received 2 partners for a night. For example, Louise hosted 2 girls who are twins: Victoria and Elizabeth. When we first met on Monday after their tiring travel from Paris, it was strange to see for the first time the penpal you spoke with only via letters or the Internet. On their arrival, a visit of the high school was organized by the French students in English and the high school organized a welcome drink with the French students, their families and the American partners. The following day the American students with their teachers observed different classes in French in the morning and in the afternoon they visited the city of Langres with their French penpals. A guide came to explain to us the several monuments in French and each student translated into English. After the city tour, we had a demonstration of a very special gun called “arquebuse” by the company of the Hallebardiers and they tasted the cheese of Langres which they seemed to appreciate. Once at home we had fun with the Americans and some of us took them to the bowling. It was great…The Americans partners really loved Langres and the school and would have liked to stay longer… for the next time! The woman who presented the conference, Mrs Méot, works for the European Parliament in Luxemburg and was a student in Diderot high school. She presented us the European parliament, the different institutions, its functioning and the different people who make it up. At the end of the conference, she gave us documents which sum up the different ideas. To me working for the European Parliament is very interesting because there are many people speaking many languages so it is an excellent way to improve one’s foreign language. Boris Neiveyans, 1ère STMG DNL management During the European Week, Mrs Raphaëlle Méot, who works at the European Parliament, came to the high school. She presented us her job and she told us that speaking another language is very important, but it doesn’t matter if we have a bad accent. She insisted on the fact that English is the most important language to speak to everyone who works at the European Parliament. Romane Perrin Raphaëlle Méot is a former student of Lycée Diderot. She works in Luxembourg-la-ville and she lives in Metz. She explained us her job : she works with many people who come from all around the world. She says that it’s not important if everybody doesn’t speak the same language because for her it’s impossible to speak 24 languages. However, she told us it’s rather a way to have fun since everybody makes fun of accents of others. In her job, she has a very particular post which is to resolve all computer problems of all of her colleagues. Raphaëlle Méot is really enthralled by her job : she talks about it with tears in her eyes. The videoconference was held in Reims and presented by 2 American assistants. A lot of information was given and we better understand the system now. They explained to us why President Barack Obama could stand for the last presidential elections as he fulfilled all the necessary conditions (be over 35, be born in the States, have lived there for 14 years at least…). They introduced us the 2 main political parties in the USA with their current candidates for the presidential elections: Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders from Vermont for the Democrats and Donald Trump or Ted Cruz for the Republicans. At the end of the videoconference, we could vote for our favourite candidates with our mobile phone. We’ll know who will be the next American president on November 8th 2016...Watch this space then! Yann:” It was very interesting” Loïs: “It was annoying and difficult to understand” Quentin: “I stopped listening because it was too long” Julien: “This conference gave us a lot of knowledge on the political system in the USA.” Margot: “Even if it was long and the sound was bas, I am grateful for this conference. I like talking about elections because I think it is a subject that concerns all the people. Besides, this is a current subject and all around the world people talk about this event.”
