THE NOVEL
The Seven Messengers was written by the Italian author Dino Buzatti and first
published in France in 1969.
Extract:
“Since I left to explore my father’s kingdom, I go farest from the city and the news are
becoming more and more rare. When I undertook that journaey, I was barely thirty and
time flew over an ininterrupted route: exactly height years, six months and half a month.
At the time of departure, I thought I could easily reach the kingdom’s border in some
weeks. Actually I only met new inhabitants, new villages and new counties.
Everywhere I met people who speaks my native tongue and told me to be my vassals.”
As a count or a myth, “The Seven Messengers” is open to be read, analyzed or understood
in many ways : narrative, rythmic, mathematical, philosophical or symbolical.
We seeked out of the text notions and questions which led us on research an
musical compositions :
the quest – the unknown, the knwoledge
the movement, pertpetual, opposite, constant
directions - precice and opposite
memories – immediate and longing
scales – time and space

MUSICS
After a year of meeting, improvisation and composition work, the duet
Chagnard-Vaillant is now ready to share its musical improvements upon the up-todate mandolin (electrified, upgraded, powerful) and the possible mandolin (based on
square work – as the french oulipo).
This
Mandolin
duet
inspired by Buzzatti’s novel
plays
improvisations
with
computing
sound machines , wild
instruments
industry
(PVC clarinet and homemade flute) and digital
instrument
industry
(acoustic and electric
mandolin,
barytone
saxophone) and creates a
suite.
Music is led by the mathematical structure of the novel and the narrative text itself
as well.
The composition contains algorithms.
The musicians playing gesture and
improvisations lead the remote responding
computing machine in order to give
precedence to performance and intention to
create a close dialog between the text and
music.
The musical and visual world created
here mixes the usual and unexpected, rigor
and elasticity and develops its own story,
echoing to the novel’s one.

ON STAGE
The performance is about an hour long. To go further on his work, Gérald
Chagnard settled new Usine software patches which bring more random in playing
and avoid to stay in a loop effect or square musical structures. It allows a control on
musical color and sound expression which is on a 4 multi-channels PA displayed.
The text itself and the musician gesture are to be screened through a special Isadora
software video display. Videos are remoted and generated by live sounds and
movements (as playing mediator or body movements).
The text is to be read as poetry and as a mathematical sequence contained in the
novel when the Seven Messengers go back and forth.

L’Arbre Canapas
Formed in 2004, L’Arbre Canapas (Canapas Tree, from Henri Michaux novel Ailleurs) is a
collective of Jazz musicians creating music, and leading education and community programs
together. Our music is a crossover inspired by jazz, world music and new music.
A musician gathering
Each band develops a unique relationship with music
communities. L’éléfanfare is an outdoor orchestra for everyone,
which turns streets and common places into surprising concert
hall. La Corde à Vent creates performances for young people.
It’s surprising and creative music blends traditional musical
instruments with inventions out of everyday objects (wild lute).
L’effet de Foehn offers to everyone, musical enlightened or
not, young and adult audiences, a contemporary composition
based on musical and visual landscapes. The quartet La Table
de Mendeleïev offers adventurous and explosive compositions,
shaking up Bunsen burners. Nadja is a bass clarinet sextet
performing André Breton’s fantasy. TTTW is a new and
original re-reading of the Who’s compositions by six multiinstrumentalist musicians.
L’Arbre Canapas is an independent association. It provides
administrative and public relation support for music creations
and broadcastings (concert planning, record production,
communication tools…) as well as education and community
programs for each project.
L’Arbre Canapas is a Jazz(s)ra member,
«platform of action and reflexion» managed by cultural jazz members from the
Rhône-Alpes : artists and collectives of artists, education structures, venues and concert hall, production
and edition structures.
L’Arbre Canapas is supported by the General Council of Ain,
The Regional Council of Rhône-Alpes, the DRAC (Ministry of
Culture), the ADAMI and the SPEDIDAM.
