25th Anniversary Western Quebec Literacy Council
2009 / 09 / 9 • Pontiac Journal du Pontiac • 11 25 Anniversary th 25 years of community service MARILEE DELOMBARD AND NANCY HUNT The Western Quebec Literacy Council (WQLC) was created on June 18, 1984. The founding executive body was made up of: Elizabeth Bate, chairperson, Anne Collins, treasurer; Pat Captain, publicity. By November, project funding was received from the Quebec Ministry of Education and Maureen Steele, the first staff person, was hired. By June 1985, WQLC had 36 trained tutors and 17 students. The numbers of trained tutors and students grew steadily as the WQLC developed its one-onone program. The one-on-one approach allows the student-tutor team to develop a course of study that is completely dedicated to the needs of the student. The group was incorporated as a Quebec not-for-profit corporation in 1989 and received its charitable status in 1991. Nicole Snaauw, coordinator from 1986-1992, saw much restructuring of the Quebec school board system during her tenure. The Protestant School Board gave the office space, supplies and secretarial help to the WQLC. In 1992, as part of the changes recommended, the office was moved to Shawville from Aylmer. It has been located at 381 Highway 148 in the Shawville Plaza for the past 13 years. Marilee DeLombard was hired as Coordinator in 1992 and Leila NultySenf was elected Chair of the board of directors. –––– See “25 years” pg. 12 SURROUNDED BY LEARNING – There’s no lack of written material and guidance for these three tutors during a training session at the Western Quebec Literacy Council office on Highway 148 in Shawville. Volunteers include, left to right: Cathy Fox Welsh, Carol Pritchard and Prema Arulpooranam. Welsh has been a volunteer since she moved to the area in 2007. She has been working with the “Happy Rockers” curling group and this year has taken over coaching the TREE student group (Teamwork to Raise Education and Equality), both affiliated with the WQLC. She also has a weekly lesson with a one-on-one student. When asked as to what she liked about being a volunteer tutor, Welsh said, “I love the experience of that shared 'aha!' moment between the student and the tutor.” High school diploma with Distance Education CAN’T COME TO SCHOOL DURING THE DAY?
