How would you interpret this acceleration in the mergers and acquisitions observed over recent months? I see it as a resurgence in the dynamism of the cosmetics market, because even though the beauty 2015 - Guide des ingrédients cosmétiques 006-0XX INTRO - EC Guide AZ 2015.indd 50 Whilst mergers are nothing new to the cosmetics industry, there is no denying the fact that buyout and acquisition announcements have been gathering speed over the course of recent months. Expression Cosmétique takes a brief look back at the highlights of 2014-2015 and shares analysis of the expert Philippe Sibour, CEO and founder of Alliance Consulting. industry was affected by the economic crisis in 2009, its foundations remain solid. This has been demonstrated by this renewed concentration of players in the sector, at all points in the chain, since 2010. External growth has clearly become a key avenue of development. Who are the main parties affected by this trend? Manufacturers and ownbrand distributors seeking to diversify their portfolio whilst also making it more sophisticated, striving for hyper-premium products, and the pharmaceutical sphere with dermo-aesthetic ranges. This concentration phenomenon is not over yet, either - indeed, the leaders have little in the way of debt and have great funding capacity for future acquisitions. Avon, for example, has been identified as a key target for a future buyout, as have Estée Lauder and Beiersdorf, not to mention the major names in the pharmacy sector which could be investing in the field in the not too distant future, thus changing the competitive state of play. The latter have a great need for new avenues of growth with high added value at a Cosmétique 03/12/15 17:35 Acquisitions / Rachats INTRODUCTION 051 s'accélère speed time when many patents are entering the public domain. The cosmetics sector, for its part, will have to run further into debt with the aim of portraying an increasingly high-end image through the diversification of its offering. This brand portfolio globalisation strategy is also driven by the major issue represented by distribution management on the international front. It is interesting to note that the packaging sector is also witnessing accelerated consolidation that is enabling European manufacturers to make significant economies of scale, increase their R&D investment and thus improve their power of negotiation when it comes to purchases. What are the consequences for the cosmetic raw materials sector? Like their ordering parties, ingredient suppliers must also expand their ranges in order to obtain an offering that covers the needs of their clients as best it can in terms of both high-performance raw materials and the ability to supply large volumes, and throughout the world. It is all going to become a matter of critical size the sector will continue to become more concentrated in order to achieve this aim, meaning that the boundaries between the cosmetics and perfumery sectors will become blurred since both are pursuing the same consumer, as the acquisitions made by Givaudan and even IFF show, the only restriction will be the capacity of the corresponding groups to fund their purchases in the long term, and for the time being, it’s a case of full steam ahead. We should therefore see further acquisitions over the course of the coming months, including some promising start-ups. ■ The global information on cosmetics & fragrances Guide of cosmetic ingredients - 2015 006-0XX INTRO - EC Guide AZ 2015.indd 51 03/12/15 17:35
