One of its new features is a modular audio and MIDI architecture, limiting current dependencies with external systems and facilitating the integration of new rendering engines. This new architecture has made it possible to enhance the OpenMusic audio player, offering more flexibility to control audio outputs. It also includes a new library, OM-Faust, that lets users create effects or synthesizers with the Faust language (integrated in the LibAudioStream Framework). The Faust effects are dynamically added to different audio channels as either processing or synthesis modules and can be controlled interactively or by automation. In the framework of a collaborative project with BEK, OM 6.7 was ported on LispWorks Linux. OM 6-Linux benefits from this new architecture and can communicate with different open source systems for MIDI and audio rendering. Laurent Bonnasse-Gahot will present SoMax, a new prototype derived from OMax for improvised arrangements. Capacitive touch sensors attach to the surface of each key, measuring the location and contact area of the musician’s fingers in performance. Just by moving the fingers around on the key surfaces, the player can naturally add vibrato, pitch bends, timbre or volume changes to each note. The TouchKeys feature native OSC and MIDI support, so they work with nearly every synthesizer or software instrument, with wind and string sounds working particularly well thanks to the ease of playing vibrato and pitch bends. Mappings between touch data and MIDI/OSC are fully customizable in the included open-source software. A unique aspect of the TouchKeys project is that the sensors install on any existing keyboard, from portable 2-octave controllers to 88-key grands. This means that the TouchKeys retain the familiar keyboard action while adding many new expressive techniques. Andrew McPherson, creator of the TouchKeys, is a composer and engineer and a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary, University of London. His previous project, the magnetic resonator piano (electronically-augmented acoustic piano), has been used in dozens of performances worldwide over the past 4 years, most recently by the London Chamber Orchestra and the band These New Puritans. THE OWL MULTI-EFFECT PEDAL Guillaume Lenost (London HackSpace) – The OWL is a multi-effects pedal with a difference: it is completely re-programmable via USB, and can be controlled via MIDI. The OWL could therefore become a platform for augmented instruments, receiving information from sensors, and processing an incoming audio signal accordingly. It makes a more portable and robust alternative to an on-stage computer. The pedal is both open source hardware and software, meaning anyone, anywhere, can create effects patches for it for free and without restrictive 24 ATELIERS FORUM 2013 Charger différents effets dans la pédale s’effectue à l’aide d’un simple « glisser/déposer ». » licenses. Effects patches can be loaded onto the pedal via a single drag and drop operation. The OWL has been designed with three audiences in mind: • Musicians can download effects from a growing online patch library. • Developers interested in audio effects can program their own effects in C++ using the open source toolchain. • Hackers can modify or extend the hardware using available pinouts on the PCB. Rebel Technology is a boutique, specialist music technology company with a history of creating innovative products for the modern musician, comprising a small team of professional programmers, DSP experts and audio engineers. The OWL is designed, built and tested to the highest standards as with all Rebel Technology products. 11:00 - 11:30 PRESENTATION OF THE BACH LIBRARY Andrea Agostini, Daniele Ghisi – As composers, we have often felt the need to integrate the complexity of results derived from computer-aided composition with the logics of real-time interaction. While very developed tools are available in each field, we did not find a way to easily bridge them. Moreover, our perception is that this need is shared by an increasingly large number of composers. “bach – automated composer’s helper” is an attempt to answer this problem: a library of Max externals and patches aimed to bring sophisticated tools for musical notation and formalization into the real-time world, along with a data structure capable to support the complexity of musical representation. NOON - 12:30 SOUND DESIGN: A PROJECT APPLIED TO WATCHMAKING Nicolas Misdariis (IRCAM) A methodological approach to sound design will be presented through the development of an industrial application for watchmaking carried out in the Sound Design and Perception team in association with the composer Sebastien Gaxie. The goal of this project is to produce the sound design for a set of alarms for a watch called “minute repetitions”. The project consists of three major steps: • The creation of the specifications for the sounds: from a reference sound corpus, a type of timbre, a map of preferences, and a series of semantic portraits that make it possible to characterize the attributes of the sound type that made up the target of the sound design process. • The creative phase was overseen by Sebastien Gaxie. This step was based on the data collected during the analyses carried out during the first step. The work led us to put in place several approaches, notably in terms of sound synthesis (additive, physical modeling via Modalys, etc.). • A final validation step that consists of examining the different propositions put forward in the light of the sound type criteria initially established that make it possible to come to a limited set of optimal solutions. 12:30 - 1:00 PRESENTATION OF GERMINATION Jean-Luc Hervé Germination is a work for 13 musicians, electronics, and a sound and botanic system. This work premiered during the ManiFeste Festival in June 2013 at IRCAM. The idea behind the work comes from the architectural specificities of the site. The work uses the growth of plants as a model and is a concert-installation in two parts. The first part, for ensemble and real-time electronics, is performed in a room in the basement, the second, electro-acoustic, is rendered in the public square outside, via 50 small loudspeakers. The form and the musical material in Germination are borrowed from the botanical world: generative, directional processes, the model of the growth of roots, fractal forms. It uses the LUA, ESTEREL, ACTION SCRIPT 3, JAVA, MAX, and SKIPPER languages. Its architecture is a subsumption of layers: a presentation layer, a layer of applied work, a persistence layer, a database that is the permanent representation of the system’s state. Subsumption means the logic of thinking of the specific under the general, considering a fact to be understood as a law. In the case of the STEPHANIE language, the subsumption will be the organization, the reorganization, the behaviors that exist and interact at a given moment between the musicians and sound II (interactive instrument). The interactions will be different according to the circumstances and the resulting interpretation. The administration kernel of the container holds five fundamental elements that can be found in all programming languages: assignment, variable declaration, sequences of statement, conditional branching, and loops. The language is modular, extensible, pluggable and persistent. This is why we have used JAVA; it is the permanency of JAVA that enables data to be stocked in a relational database with the assistance of SQL. The technology that makes STEPHANIE possible is algorithmic. This mechanism is universal. An algorithm can be specified in human language, in computer language, or even in a dedicated material system. The only obligation is to provide a precise description of the computational procedure to follow. The computational reasoning of the interactive evolutionary algorithm uses the mathematical mechanisms of the Menger sponge. 3:00 - 3:30 PRESENTATION OF SNAIL Thomas Helie, Charles Picasso (IRCAM) The SnailAnalyser is a spectrum analyzer that uses a unique representation of sounds based on a chromatic alignment. Compared to standard analyzers, this representation lets you easily visualize the active zones though luminance (like in a spectrogram) on frequency abacus laid out by notes on a tempered scale. (The HISSTools Impulse Response Toolbox). THE BOX: APPROACHES TO THE REALITY OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC PERFORMANCE Alex Harker, Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay (CeReNeM, University of Huddersfield) This presentation extends certain aspects of the work presented in the Thinking Inside the Box Project, by exploring efficient software-based methods for improving sound reproduction within the concert hall. The key problems discussed are: (1) the detrimental effects of room acoustic and/or sub-optimal loudspeaker design on the frequency response of amplification systems for concert use; (2) the non-ideal frequency responses typically encountered when using close-microphone techniques or contact transducers, methods often more suitable for live applications, especially when utilizing live processing. The need for pragmatic, musician-centric software addressing these issues is identified, along with a set of criteria relevant musicians working in the fields of live electronic performance and interactive technologies. These problems, along with proposed solutions and software tools are investigated practically in both controlled conditions and real world scenarios, and the outcomes of experimentation and testing discussed in detail. Real world testing is essential in order to ensure that any developed tools and correction procedures are robust and viable for use within the constraints of a typical concert performance of electronic music. Finally, a generic procedure is presented for rapidly generating and applying inversions to speaker/room combinations and close audio capture using software developed to satisfy the requirements outlined earlier (The HISSTools Impulse Response Toolbox).
