Welcome to our New yet Familiar
Supervisor of Resident Services!
good reputation as being caring,
compassionate and always having the
resident at the center of any of her actions.
She has also gained respect from her coworkers and especially her peers when in
2011 she stepped in as the Acting
Supervisor of Resident Services and did a
wonderful job.
Tracey holds a Baccalaureate degree from
McMaster University. For a few years
now, Tracey also took an initiative to
further her skills by acquiring a Leadership
certificate from St. Lawrence College.
Last addition of the Lodger, I wrote about
the retirement of our long standing
supervisor of Resident Services- the one
and only Mrs. Linda Geisel. Although we
all know that these are big shoes to fill, we
have been successful and we are thrilled
that we have been able to promote from
within our organization.
Well now, I am pleased to announce that
another long standing employee of the
Lodge has been hired as the newest
member of our Leadership Team. Mrs.
Tracey Delage has been employed, as a
Recreologist here at the Lodge for the past
18 years.
Tracey, over the years has gained a very

As the Lodge continues to receive many
accolades for the excellent work that we do,
we welcome Tracey to the Team to help us
raise the bar even higher in the years to
come. The Leadership team is quite
excited and welcomes a new member and
we are looking forward to the beginning of
a new journey at the Lodge.
Tracey's official start date is July 4th. We
anticipate that there will be a two to three
week transition as we look at replacing
Tracey's current position as Full Time
Recreologist on our 4th floor. We thank
you for your understanding and patience
through this transition.

Tips for travelling with someone
who has dementia
We all enjoy a
change of
scenery and a
break from
routines.
However, as
Alzheimer's
disease or other
dementias progress, changes in abilities
can make it difficult to get away.
Careful planning will help you manage the
changes in surroundings and routines.
Here are some tips to make the trip easier:
Have a plan
Ÿ Include the person with dementia in
your planning. Give her a copy of the
trip itinerary for her reference.
ŸIf you are planning to visit friends and
family, tell them about the changes since
your last visit.
ŸLearn as much as you can about the place
you'll be visiting, so you can anticipate
what you'll need.
Ÿ Think ahead about activities that may
need to be adjusted.
Ÿ Consider a holiday package, where
everything is organized for you.
ŸRegister the person with the Alzheimer
Society's MedicAlert®Safely Home®.
Members receive an engraved
identification bracelet, which allows
police and emergency responders to
6 LODGER July/August 2016
quickly identify a person who gets
separated.
Ÿ Carry recent photographs, details of
what the person is wearing, and
preferred places of interest. This will
help during a search if one is necessary.
ŸKeep a copy of the name and number of
your hotel in a familiar spot in the
person's purse or pocket, so he can ask
for help if needed.
Simplify
ŸAim for as few changes in routine as you
reasonably can.
ŸTry to get a direct flight.
Ÿ If you're travelling by car for a long
distance, consider extending the time to
get there and driving shorter distances
each day.
Ask for help
ŸIf possible, have an additional person
travel with you to help.
Ÿ Make sure that your travel agent is
aware of any special needs.
ŸInform the airline that you are travelling
with a person with dementia. You may
want to request early boarding, a
wheelchair, transportation upon
arrival, help getting on and off the plane
or with stowing carry-on baggage.
ŸRequest seating near washrooms.
ŸIf you are staying at a hotel, let the staff
know about your needs and explain
some of the possible difficulties you
think you might encounter.

Joyeux Copains
Les Océans
de la vie dans les mers.
Plus des deux-tiers de notre planète sont
recouverts d'eau.
fragiles.

Life Before the Lodge

Greta Dillabough (Carruthers)
Every year when we
welcome our birthday,
we reminisce about the
past year and past
birthdays. Our fourth
floor resident, Greta
Dillabough, has 102
birthdays to reminisce
about.
Greta was born on
December 26, 1914 in
the town of Crysler. Her Dad was a farmer
with pigs, cows, chickens, a dog and cats in
the barn. She had a brother, Wallace, and a
sister, Beulah. The whole family would get
up at 5 a.m. to hand milk their Jersey and
Holstein cows. After breakfast Dad would
take their milk to Crysler and bring his
children to school which was a 2.5 mile
wagon ride.
The New York Central Railway travelled
through Crysler – its route was New York
to Ottawa. The train was called the “milk
run” because it stopped in the small
villages along its track to pick up milk. Like
many villages Crysler had a cheese factory
where farmers also brought their milk.
Greta didn’t help with the ploughing but
she did drive the horse and wagon with the
hay loader behind it. Wallace would be in
18 LODGER July/August 2016
was attached to a top rail in the barn. Their
horse would move the pulley so the loose
hay was fork lifted up to the mow. Greta
preferred her job because it was so hot in
the mow.
The Carruthers had three horses – one for
their buggy and two for heavy farm work.
Greta studied to Form 3 in the Finch High
School. She would stay in Finch for the
week with an older couple and travel home
on weekends. Today it is only a 9 minute
car ride on a paved road (quite different in
Greta's days).
After she left high school, she helped the
family at home. During this time Greta
would cook on the wood stove, feed the
chickens and collect their eggs, wash the
family clothes on Monday with the wash
tub and hand ringer. Her Mom made their
soap from lye. Greta experienced killing
chickens for their meals, too.
Due to no indoor plumbing they used an
outhouse and a water pump for all their
needs. Also, with no electricity they used
kerosene lamps after dark. Greta said the
Aladdin lamp gave the best light. Mr.
Carruthers would cut ice from the Nation
river in the winter for their ice house. They
would cover the ice with sawdust to slow
down the melting process. This was years
before ice boxes or electric refrigerators.
By Stephanie Hill-Nicholls
Their vegetable garden had everything in it
for the family to eat or store in the cellar for
the winter. They made preserves of
strawberries, raspberries, peaches and
applesauce. Her Mom made a delicious
apple jelly. Greta remembers beautiful, big
peonies around their home with iris and
pink Canterbury bells in other flower beds.
Her Dad purchased a manual transmission
Ford car that sat four people. The car was
quite sporty with a canvas top that folded
back. They only drove it to church or to
visit family. Crysler had the amenities the
family enjoyed; their church, school, two
General Stores (Benoit’s and Lavigne’s), a
lumber mill, post office and bank. Mrs.
Carruthers made some clothes for the
family and they bought some at the
General Store. Greta was a real farm girl
who loved country life in the Crysler area.
In 1933, Greta's life changed when she met
Reynald Dillabough. It was love at first
sight. They were married at the Finch
manse with Isabel MacLeod and Mac
Gordon standing up for them. This was the
depression so there weren't many jobs
around. Reyn and Greta stayed on his
Dad's farm to help out for a year. The
newlyweds decided they wanted a change
in their lives. They moved to Ottawa and
lived in an apartment while Reyn studied
to be a barber. What a shock for this
country couple to live in a city. Their next
move would be to Avonmore where they
bought a house where they could live in the
back and Reyn could have his barber shop
in the front. They liked Avonmore with its
paved street, sidewalks, stores (3), dentist,
undertaker, garages (3), bank, post office,
churches and school.
Their children, Marlene and Daryll, were
born and grew up in Avonmore.
Something exciting for Greta at this time
was for her to work at the post office for ten
years. She had passed her driving license
when she was sixteen years old. She
enjoyed driving to Cornwall for special
shopping.
After Reyn started to
experience heart issues they moved to
Cornwall to an apartment. He passed
away in 1980. Greta and Reyn had enjoyed
taking their family on vacations to Daytona
Beach, Maine and York Beach.
I asked Greta her
secret to longevity
and she couldn’t
really say. Her Mom
had died at age 96
while a resident at
the first Glen Stor Dun Lodge and her Dad
died at age 87 in the Winchester Hospital.
Greta wasn't a person who liked exercise
but she enjoyed bowling. Greta is proud to
share her photos of her family of Five
Generations and to say how good they are
to visit and keep in touch. She's a bit
discouraged by her loss of independence
lately since she fell and has to depend on
her wheelchair. We at the Lodge are so glad
Greta is still with us to share her wonderful
memories, beautiful twinkly eyes and
smile.

Summer Safety 101!
Summer is a busy time of year here at the
Lodge as so many of our residents and
families love taking advantage of the heat
after a long winter. Aside from providing
warmth, the sun has some health benefits,
such as helping the body produce vitamin
D and treating certain skin conditions.
However, because older adults and
individuals with physical and cognitive
impairments have a greater health risks
related to sun and heat exposure, it is
important to take certain precautions in the
summer months.
The Government of Canada recently
updated its recommendations regarding
sun and heat exposure to reflect changes in
the Canadian environment. Due to the
increasing strength of the sun (measured
using the UV index), these guidelines
highlight the use of light clothing and
higher SPF sunscreens (SPF 30 as a
minimum) as means for protection.
Five major recommendations are indicated
as essential to avoiding sun- and heatrelated issues (heat stroke, heat exhaustion,
sunburns):
(1)
Prepare for the heat by checking the
weather forecast and knowing how you can
stay cool and protected. When the UV index
is expected to reach 3 or greater, it is
important to take extra precautions and
reduce time spent in the sun between 11am
and 4pm.
(2)
Pay close attention how you (and
20 LODGER July/August 2016
those around you)
are feeling. Check
for signs of heat
illness (dizziness,
nausea, headache,
rapid heart rate). If any of these symptoms
occur, move to a cool place and drink some
water. Seek immediate medical attention if
body temperature continues to rise, the
person stops sweating, or they become
unconscious (heat stroke).
(3)
Stay hydrated. Make sure you drink
lots of cool fluids throughout the day to
avoid dehydration. Older adults and
people on certain medications are
especially at risk for dehydration, so make
sure they have lots of water on hot days.
Remember: thirst is not a good indicator of
dehydration.
(4)
Stay cool. Wear loose-fitting, light
coloured clothing and keep physical
exertion to a minimum during very hot
days. If your home is very hot, take cool
baths/showers, use a fan, or spend time in
an air-conditioned public facility.
(5)
Avoid exposure. The best way to
prevent heat and sun-related illnesses is to
avoid exposure to extreme conditions.
Protect yourself from the sun by applying
sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or
higher throughout the day, wearing a
wide-brimmed hat, and using UVA and
UVB blocking sunglasses.

Volunteer
Goodbye Bill van Ryswsk
On behalf of the residents, we thank you for
the time spent with us over the last 28 years.
We hope you spend many hours enjoying
your flower and vegetable gardens as well
as walks and bike rides along the
waterfront.
After almost 28 years of voluntary service
at the Glen Stor Dun Lodge, we say
goodbye to a good friend, Bill van
Ryswsk. His last official day was May
30th, 2016. Bill has dedicated many
hours to enhancing the lives of our
residents. He has led countless current
events programs ensuring that residents
stay informed on issues pertaining to
local, national and international news.
Another of Bill's contributions was his
monthly submission to the Lodger. He
provided all of the word puzzles and
word searches that have been filling page
28 of the Lodger.
Pictured is 4th floor resident Jean Pilon
enjoying a game of cribbage with
volunteer, Diane. They get together once a
week to play cards.
On top of these regular contributions, Bill
has been known to “pop in” to visit our
residents. When out for a stroll, along the
bike path, Bill would take it upon himself
to spend some one to one time with some
of our residents.
Thank you to Tom Aitkens for planting the
fourth floor garden. Cucumbers, tomatoes
and peppers will be enjoyed soon!

I was born in Alberta and grew up in
Avonmore, Ontario. I identify myself as a First
Nations artist and explore artistic expression
through the use of acrylics and mixed media. I
have been establishing myself as an artist for 15
years now and have artwork hanging in the
Chateau Laurier, Ottawa. I would describe my
painting style as a mixture of abstract
expression and realism. I like to incorporate
my expressive style into traditional sceneries
to create original context.

Taste & Tell
Nursing Departments will be hosting three
summer BBQ's. All of the BBQ's will be
held outside, either on the front patio or the
special care garden.
Summer is synonymous with grilling for
many Canadian families, and why not?
When the weather is warm, we spend
more time outdoors and try to stay out of
the hot kitchen. It stays light longer, and
the evenings tend to seem a little less jampacked with activities than usual. These
are all great reasons to look to the
barbecue for dinner inspiration.
According to Hearth, Patio and Barbecue
Association's 2013 survey data (the most
recent year this data was collected),
ŸThe most popular foods for cooking
on the grill are, in order: burgers (85
percent), steak (80 percent), hot dogs
(79 percent) and chicken (73
percent).
ŸThe side dishes most commonly
prepared on the grill are, in order,
corn (41 percent), potatoes (41
percent), and other vegetables (32
percent).·
ŸThe most popular flavors of barbecue
sauce are hickory, followed by
mesquite, honey, and then spicy-hot.
This summer, the Recreation department

BBQ dates are as follows:

Road Rage
We were driving to my mom's, a 45 minute
drive. Emma (my 6 year old) was whining,
“Are we there yet? When will we get
there?”, over and over again. So Lexi, (my
4 year old) turns to her and loudly says
“We'll get there when we get there! Now
STOP!” I never laughed so hard.
Punch on the Rocks
At home my son likes me to mix kiwi punch
with strawberry punch. We were at a
birthday party and my son was asked what
kind of drink he wanted – he answered, “a
mixed drink please.”
Kids just say the darndest things.
After getting in trouble for something a
little boy said, “I’m only 5—I don’t know all
the rules yet!”

Harvey Barkley tosses up some magic
in Sandbags
Harvey “the magician”
Barkley was up to his
old tricks again as he
pieced together a streak
to remember.
His
collective work this
entire year has really been unmatched as he
has been a model of consistency. Five more
sandbag scores over the 1000 point mark in
June had him capturing sandbagger of the
month honors yet again. Harvey's top tally
of 1370 points was tops among all floors as
he continues his torrid pace. We look
forward to seeing if he can carry this
impressive momentum into the summer
months. Way to go Harvey!
Despite Harvey's recent surge, there were
many other residents that made some noise
in June, here is how things looked: Reg
Lalonde was 10 points away from sharing
top honors with Harvey as his 1360 placed
him firmly in the second spot. Others
included Jeana Reilly 1290, Roger Varin
1240, Yvonne Paradis 1210, Robert
Robertson 1200, Gordon Casselman 1160,
Fleurette Beauregard 1150, Joyce Ruest
1120, Grace Hickey 1070, Jeanine Marleau
1070, Jan Fournier 1060, Brian Gignac 1045,
Agathe Jolicoeur 1040, Alvine Fishwick
1030 and Hattie Armstrong with 1020. As
you can see there was no shortage of high
scores. Great stuff guys!
Scoreboard
Triple Bull performance in darts
June was the month of
the triple bullesye as
three shooters
m a n a g e d t o
accomplish the feat
together. The triple
bullseye three way tie was made up of
Robert Robertson, Hattie Armstrong and
Betty Dionne. All of which are no strangers
to being in the red zone. This was an
excellent month for the bullseye in general
as a whopping 19 were spread out over 10
different shooters. This number is more
than double from what we are used to
seeing over a month's span. There must be
something in the water because even the
high scores were both above average and
abundant. Jeana Reilly posted a monster
score of 109 points to lead all shooters. This
one was a personal best for Jeana as she
continues to improve week in and week
out.
Other scores to be recognized
included Betty Dionne 98, 72, Betty Greico
84, 78, Grace Hickey 71 and June
McCrimmon with a 68. The darts program
has become a tradition for many on Friday
afternoons and it's always a good time.
Come on out and join the action, you won't
be disappointed. All residents and family
members are welcome. We'll see you there
folks!
