François Hartog, Director of the Ancient and Modern Historiography Chair at the School for
Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris.
François Hartog ran the Louis-Gemet Centre, a centre for the comparative study of ancient
societies, founded by Jean-Pierre Vernant and then ran by Pierre Vidal-Naquet. By combining
the approaches of anthropology and tools of intellectual history, his reflection on history
comprises toing and froing between the ancient past and the contemporary world, between
ancient and modern experiences. He currently holders the Ancient and Modern Historiography
Chair at the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris.
