Breastfeeding Charter Breastfeeding is ideal for your baby
Breastfeeding Charter Breastfeeding is ideal for your baby To help best support you, we commit ourselves to : · informing and helping you thanks to an expert team in breastfeeding, starting during the antenatal consultations and throughout your whole pregnancy as well as during the beginning of breastfeeding. · respecting and supporting the first «magic» moments with your baby in the delivery room. (We suggest you breastfeed your baby in the first hour after birth for this reassures him/her, even if you do not intend to breastfeed afterwards). · limiting mother/baby separation *. · respecting your choice of feeding. To help assist with breastfeeding, we advise you to: · breastfeed at your baby’s request. · only give him/her the mother’s milk, avoid bottle-feeding, artificial milk, water or «téterelles» which are likely to complicate breastfeeding. · not to use a pacifier during the first several days (its’ use can decrease the number of feedings and therefore complicate the beginning of breastfeeding). · provide yourself with a calm environment. Do you know that ? · newborn babies generally tend to drink only small quantities during the first 48 hours, then much more the following days (usually 8 to 15 times per day, especially during the night). · newborn babies are often awake in the evenings and in the middle of the night: they then want to be reassured by being cuddled or by being breastfed. It doesn’t always mean they are hungry. · If your baby cries, it may only be because he/she wants reassurance: your voice, your odor, the softness of your breast help. Do not hesitate to cuddle him/her ! · When starting to breastfeed, it is better to offer the breast to your baby when he/she seems to want to drink (he/she opens his/her mouth and usually show sucking movements) but before he/she cries. · when leaving the maternity ward, we remain available to help with breastfeeding: midwife postnatal consultations at our hospital: 025553508 You may also contact: v v v v Infor allaitement: 02 2429933 http://www.infor-allaitement.be Leche League: 02 2181530 BrusselsChilbirth Trust: 02 7213928 Borstvoeding : 03 6530341 Advised Readings: - L’allaitement, de la naissance au sevrage - Marie Thirion - Albin Michel,2004 - L’allaitement de mon enfant - Marie Dominique Linder et Catherine Maupas Hachette Pratique * If your child has to stay in the neonatal service, the nurses will help you to express your milk, in the first 3 to 6 hours after birth, and then 6 to 8 times per day, preferably next to your baby (it is more stimulating).
