ROAD SAFETy AND TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
CriMiNaL CODE INFRACTIONS IN 2010
Misdemeanours and Violations
of the Criminal Code in 2010
A total of 117,666 misdemeanours and violations were reported in
Montreal, which represents a reduction of 7.3% compared to 2009
and of 13.3% since 2005.
The number of crimes in 2010 was 10.2% lower than the average of the
past five years; it has decreased by 24.8% over the last 10 years.
Crimes against the person
In 2010, 24,627 crimes against the person were reported in the
territory – 55 fewer than in 2009, representing a reduction of 0.2%.
These crimes have decreased by 7.8% since 2005.
The number of crimes against the person reported in 2010 was 3%
lower than the average of the past five years (25,396 crimes) and also
lower (22.2%) than 10 years ago (31,648 crimes in 2000).
Homicides
The number of homicides increased from 31 in 2009 to 37 in 2010. The
number of homicides in 2010 was the same as the average of the past
five years, and lower than the average recorded in Montreal in the last
10 years (43 homicides) and 20 years (54 homicides).
Attempted murders
The number of attempted murders increased by 5.7%, from 106 in
2009 to 112 in 2010. This increase follows a sharp increase (53.6%)
in 2009. Despite these increases, the number of attempted
murders was lower in 2010 than the average of the past five
years (119 crimes per year).
Assault
The number of assaults decreased by 7.0%, from 14,004 in 2009 to
13,028 in 2010. The number of reported assaults in 2010 was lower
than the average of the past five years (average of 13,866 crimes)
and has decreased by 25.7% in 10 years.
Sexual assaults
The 47.9% rise in the number of sexual assaults in 2010 was largely
due to the implementation of a new statistical codification for
misdemeanours included in the “other sexual offences” category
that could not be accounted for in the year 2009. In 2010, the 436
“other sexual offences” recorded were added to the sexual assaults
recorded and they alone increased this category of crime by 40.4%.
As for actual sexual assaults, the real increase was 7.5% (1,161 crimes
in 2010 compared to 1,080 in 2009).
Aggravated thefts and extortion
Possession of stolen goods
Aggravated thefts and extortion increased by 2.2%, from 3,784 in 2009
to 3,869 in 2010. The number of aggravated thefts and extortion has
decreased by 10.9% since 2005 and 16.8% in the last 10 years.
Possession of stolen goods offences increased by 66.1%, from 531
in 2009 to 882 in 2010. The number of these offenses is 42.6% higher
than the average of the past five years (619 crimes per year).
Other offences against the person
Frauds
Other offenses against the person (criminal harassment, threats and
abduction or kidnapping) rose 5.4% in 2010. These crimes, however,
have decreased by 6.7% since 2005 and by 23.0% in the last 10 years.
In 2010, 4,458 frauds were reported – 11.7% less than in 2009 (5,049

*The 47.9% rise in the number of sexual assaults in 2010 was largely
due to the implementation of a new statistical codification for
misdemeanours included in the “other sexual offences” category
that could not be accounted for in the year 2009.
**The 2010 statistics regarding the changes in adult crime and juvenile
delinquency are not available.
