Mark Themann - Centre of Artist Books
Mark Themann fathom – one installation over four rooms – site-specific intervention, objects, ephemera, artist books, limited editions EXPOSITION ➨ 12/10/07 ➨ 23/12/07 FATHOM was made specifically for the Centre des livres d’artistes and largely made on site, both in response to the CDLA context and its rooms. It incorporates fragments of earlier works (never shown), together with larger series of new works, (likewise not exhibited), into an interweaving fourroom-work. In English, the term fathom offers a double meaning: – To attempt to understand… an enigma… or the attempt to make sense of, to work out to get to the bottom of, something. – A unit of measurement with which to sound or plumb, the depth of water. This double meaning centres on the interior and the exterior worlds, which are nevertheless relational. On one hand, there is the attempt to understand, where both the attempt and that which is to be understood, are subjective or mysterious – not always logically quantifiable or traceable. As a maritime based measuring device, its usages become highly quantifiable, with much resting on the correct data obtained by this strictly analytic tool. In this work there is a playfulness, between analytic and the subjective, between the exterior and interior worlds and between the presence of the text, the enigmatic pointers of the text, the everyday materials, the literary and various elements associated with time, the gesture perception, the hermeneutics of perception and last but not least, the book and its “cousins”: the page, the newspaper, the atlas, the map, the office note pad etc. If I have made a work, which can be analytically located, well and good. If I have per chance succeeded in moving further, to confound the audience and myself, with a possible spaciousness in the invitation to consider a re-cognition of the familiar unknown – it would be a great pleasure indeed.
