amien Hirst naît à Bristol (Angleterre) en 1965. Il grandit à Leeds, puis étudie
au Goldsmith’s College, à Londres. Lors de ses études, il est un des principaux
organisateurs de Freeze (1988), une exposition remarquable qui lança le mouYoung
British Artists (Jeunes artistes britanniques) où il expose ses œuvres et

celle de ses contemporains. Cette exposition donna un coup de fouet à l’art contemporain britannique.

L’ensemble de l’œuvre de Hirst confronte les aspects scientifiques, philosophiques et
religieux de l’existence humaine en utilisant la sculpture, la peinture et l’estampe. On
lui décerne le Prix Turner en 1995 pour The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind
of Someone Living (L’impossibilité physique de la mort dans un esprit vivant). En 2004,
Hirst collabore avec Sarah Lucas et Angus Fairhurst afin d’exposer des œuvres récentes à la Tate Britain sous le titre In-a-Gadda-da-Vida.
Hirst’s body of work confronts the scientific, philosophical and religious aspects
of human existence and includes sculpture, painting and printmaking. He has
exhibited widely and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995 for The Physical
Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. In 2004, Hirst collaborated
with Sarah Lucas and Angus Fairhurst to exhibit recent works at Tate Britain,
under the title In-a-Gadda-da-Vida.

2010 et, en collaboration avec Michael Joo, Have You Ever Really Looked at the Sun?
(Avez-vous déjà vraiment regardé le soleil ?) à la Haunch of Venison de Berlin en 2010.
In 2006, works from the ar tist’s Murderme collection were exhibited at the
Serpentine gallery, London: ‘In the darkest hour there may be light. ‘More recently,

at Goldsmiths College, London. Most notable amongst the exhibitions he
curated while at college was Freeze, in 1988, in which he exhibited his work
and that of his contemporaries. The exhibition is widely believed to have been
the star ting point of the Young British Ar tist Movement, and a defining moment
in kick-star ting cutting edge British contemporary ar t.
Hirst’s work can be found in many impor tant collections worldwide, including
Tate, London, UK; British Council, UK; MoMA, New York, USA; Hirshorn Museum
and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC, USA; National Galleries of Scotland,
Edinburgh, UK; Broad Ar t Foundation; Central Museum, Utrecht, Netherlands;
Neue Galerie Graz, Austria and State Museum of Berlin, Germany.
