PORT OF CONCARNEAU (1) The port of Concarneau has centred around three main activities for many years. Firstly, the landing of fresh fish and its initial sale on the fishmarket ; secondly, commercial activity essentially concerning refrigerated cargoes of tuna caught by Concarneau boats operating in distant waters ; finally, ship building and repair. Fishing was at its height in the nineties. The port had hundreds of vessels (factory ships, trawlers, inshore fishing boats). Today the fleet comprises 25 offshore fishing vessels and just over a hundred inshore fishing boats ranging from 7-18m sardine fishers to 12m “Langoustiniers” (prawn boats). The variety of the catch, its freshness and high quality makes Concarneau an essential part of the French fishing network. Although having declined in recent years the catch is stabilizing at around 10,000 tons which makes Concarneau wholesale fish market the fourth largest grossing fishmarket in France.
