Press release
For her solo exhibition Enna Chaton has been invited by the CRAC LR to present a collection of photographs
in the three large gallery rooms dedicated to her. Enna Chaton's artistic practice is essentially developed
around the subject of the nude and the model. Enhanced with practical performance, the photographic
propositions given centre stage at the art centre are presented under the form of a "tableau" in the sense
of a piece of theatre, like a division of time and space, one "tableau" per room but also like hypothetical
plans of sequences of performances or even like a composition of "frozen frames".
The development of Enna Chaton's work also convenes installation, staging and sculpture, and interweaves different fields of reference and expressions in the construction of her photographic devices.
Enna Chaton's performances highlight the participants who have been invited to explore territories
which are unknown to them in a very distinctive form of stripping bare. The artist, equally naked with
them, is trying to open a permissive, experimental and creative space, where the being reveals themself
as different from humdrum daily life, where nudity creates a world which is out of sync with the real
world, where this democratic nudity sweeps away norms and stereotypes. Enna Chaton proposes a
gentle and brutal confrontation with herself and others and the public. The artist's collection of photos
is linked to her performances.
Enna Chaton has been participating in the organisation of the Sonorities Festival in Montpellier since
2005 - from text to sound - with the other members of the collective: writer and sound poet AnneJames Chaton, musician Carole Rieussec, musician Didier Aschour, writer Emmanuel Adely, writer
Frédéric Dumond, musician Jean-Kristophe Camps and photographer François Lagarde.

"A saying which appeared on walls and written anonymously stipulated: 'with the power of words,
I prefer to move skins' (French play on words - 'Au pouvoir des mots, je préfère le mouvoir des peaux)".
At other times undoubtedly, the play on words is taking the value of an escape and of criticism visàvis an authority, the spoken word, on the body. However, with Enna Chaton, we bet that all that raises
the movement of bodies, of their stopping, their suspension, joins with the infinite shiver of phrases,
of confidences, of sparkles or murmurs that are involved between two images, between objects,
silences and colours. The spoken word is also a vehicle for desire and prolongs or anticipates
physiological disorientations, and it is unpredictable. A currency of exchange, it throws new embers
on the senses, or extinguishes them. The spoken word is drowned both in the batting of an eyelid or
in the beating of a heart. In its turn the body is a diffuser of uncertainties. It is modulation. It comes
to rub shoulders with fictions which ask only to be allowed to see, to live.
Enna Chaton is a gatherer of bodies and of words. A collector? Perhaps, even though the stakes are
very quickly revealed as other than in the obsession of conquest, or of possession.
The images are lively but without ostentation, violence seems eradicated, audacity is there but has
foiled all spirit of provocation. There is gentleness, as if the feeling of culpability has flown by, as if
shame had broken its earthly bonds. because there is something angelic also, totally out of line with
our obscene era."

"The artist prompts meetings and observes the bodies, recording is done discretely, the intention is
not voyeurism or exhibitionism but rather sharing of a sensuality, of an invincible uniqueness like a
unique point of origin. The exploration of desire is the essence of artistic and loving activity. The
ambiguity of the work comes from the subject addressed, simultaneously archaic and complex,
controlled and impulsive, personal and universal. And its pertinence, of the necessity to call into question
the persistent western cleavage between the body and spirit, reason and desire. In an indirect way,
Enna Chaton's work shows how sexual impulses also produce our love of beauty and form our ethics.
This work stands in resistance to the current phenomenon of derealisation. It responds by an aesthetic
of difference and a reality nearer to disenchantment and to the identity crisis revealed at the start of
the century. Commercial society is an extreme form of expropriation which empties language and
bodies of their density, and this is why grasping the exposed being and reinventing love is equivalent
nowadays to taking up a political position."

the banks of the royal canal, the Regional Centre of Contemporary
Art opens out onto the Mediterranean. Its architecture offers an
exceptional exhibition space in a former industrial building. Architect
MEDIA RELATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER Lorenzo Piqueras has restored this original site to give it its current
