 Births, Deaths and Marriages Births The birth of a child born in France must be registered within three days of its occurrence at the Town Hall of the place of birth. You may also be eligible to register the child’s birth at the Embassy of the country to which you are a citizen. Deaths The death of a relative or friend can be a traumatic experience. Dealing with death in a foreign country can be even more daunting due to the unfamiliar and foreign administrative proceedings as well as the language barrier. For British nationals The British Embassy and Consular services are ready to help in any way and can give advice on repatriation and burial Marriages Advice concerning marriages must be obtained from the Town Hall where the marriage is to take place. Publication of the banns in the town hall is compulsory in France and you must have a civil wedding certificate before you can be married in a church.
