I will go unto the altar of God
Healey Willan (1880-1968)
I will go unto the altar of God, even the God of my joy and gladness.
Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after
thee, O God. (Psalms 42, 43)
RESPONSES / RÉPONS
PSALM / PSAUME 121 Levavi oculos.

1. I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: / O whence cometh my
help?
2 My help cometh even from the Lord, / who hath made heaven
and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: / and he that keepeth
thee will not sleep.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel / shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord himself is thy keeper: / the Lord is thy defence upon
thy right hand;
6 So that the sun shall not burn thee by day, / neither the moon by
night.
7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: / yea, it is even he
that shall keep thy soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, / from
this time forth for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be;
World without end, Amen.
FIRST LESSON / PREMIÈRE LECTURE
2 Samuel 1:17-27
(English translation)
David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He
ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it
is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said: Your glory, O Israel, lies
slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen! Tell it not
in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; or the daughters
of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will
exult. You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon
you, nor bounteous fields! For there the shield of the mighty was
defiled, the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more. From the blood
of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not
turn back, nor the sword of Saul return empty. Saul and Jonathan,
beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they
were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. O daughters
of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with crimson, in luxury,
who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. How the mighty have
fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan lies slain upon your high
places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved
were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of
women. How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war
perished!

SECOND LESSON / DEUXIEME LECTURE
Before the ending of the day
Healey Willan (1880-1968)
Before the ending of the day, creator of the world, we pray that with
thy wonted favour thou wouldst be our guard and keeper now. From
all ill dreams defend our eyes, from nightly fears and fantasies; tread
under foot our ghostly foe, that no polution we may know. O Father,
that we ask be done, through Jesus Christ thine only Son, who, with
the Holy Ghost and thee, doth live and reign eternally. Amen. (Latin
hymn trans. Neale)
(Phos Hilaron)

Mark 2:23-28
sabbat. »

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
Grant to us, Lord, we beseech thee, the spirit to think and do always
such things as be rightful; that we, who cannot do any thing that is
good without thee, may by thee be enabled to live according to thy
will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
