July 1, 2016, Message from the incoming Chair and Secretary
In the name of Jesus Christ, the only Sovereign Head of our Church, we offer you our greetings on
this first morning of Québec Presbytery—Consistoire du Québec as your presbytery’s first Chair and
Secretary. We join to welcome you as part of this new family emerging from the melding together of
two old and much revered families in our United Church of Canada.
In this new family that we all join, we arrive at the same time. There are no newcomers or oldtimers. We have chosen each other as family, mostly sight unseen, but in the trust and hope that
Christ inspires in us all.
We are called to the Church—we have chosen family to make our way through this call.
This all now seems to have happened quite quickly and the next few months will see many details
being worked out and new ways of being together changing and becoming better servants for each
other and the church. It won’t all be in place by nightfall tonight, but we will all be working to get
this working at the jobs that matter—continuing to animating Christ’s ministry in a changing
Québec, but also asking ourselves what that means to us now.
In any family, issues can and will arise. Someone’s room will be bigger. Someone’s chair won’t fit. A
beloved picture frame will move from its appointed place. Folk will grow old and young will arrive.
We will change. Nerves may fray. Big sisters and little brothers may be resented. Mommy and Daddy
seem to have left the kids to deal with this with scarcely a Bible and a songbook—and some bread
and wine.
But this family will take vision (and visioning), patience and impatience, hope and the spirit’s help
to rise above despair and challenges both real and imagined. Tall order yes, but we are stronger in
this bigger and wider family to become bigger and wider in our response.
So courage, sisters and brothers, as we grow together in love and work of Church!
As this Church cannot keep from singing, we leave you with the words of Voices United 395:
Come in, come in and sit down—you are a part of the family. We are lost and we are found, and we
are a part of the family.
You know the reason why you came—yet no reason can explain; So share in the laughter and cry in
the pain, for we are a part of the family.
God is with us in this place—like a mother’s warm embrace. —We’re all forgiven by God’s grace, for
we are a part of the family.
There’s life to be shared in the bread and the wine; —we are the branches, Christ is the vine. —This
is God’s temple, it’s not yours or mine, but we are a part of the family.
There’s rest for the weary and health for us all; there’s a yoke that is easy, and a burden that’s small.
So come in and worship and answer the call, for we are a part of the family.
Come in, come in and sit down—you are a part of the family. We are lost and we are found, and we
are a part of the family.

Le 1er juillet 2016 – Un mot du Président et du Secrétaire entrants
Au nom du Jésus-Christ, le seul chef souverain de notre Église, nous vous saluons en ce premier jour
de notre nouveau consistoire, le Consistoire du Québec — Québec Presbytery, en notre qualité de
premier Président et premier Secrétaire. Nous nous joignons l’un à l’autre pour vous accueillir au
sein de cette nouvelle famille, la fusion de deux anciennes et très vénérées familles de l’Église Unie
du Canada.
Nous arrivons tous dans le sein de cette nouvelle famille en même temps. Il n’y a pas de nouveaux
venus, pas d’anciens. Nous nous sommes choisis mutuellement, en toute bonne foi, sans nous être
vus, mais unis dans notre assurance et notre conviction que c’est le Christ lui-même qui nous guide.
Nous sommes appelés à constituer l’Église — nous avons choisi d’être famille pour répondre à cet
appel.
La chose s’est faite très rapidement, et il reste bien des détails à régler et de nouvelles voies à tracer
pour qu’ensemble nous devenions de meilleurs serviteurs de Dieu, de l’Église et des uns des autres.
Tout ne sera pas en place à la tombée du jour aujourd’hui, mais nous travaillerons à toutes les
tâches qu’il reste à faire, dont la première : animer le ministère du Christ dans un Québec en pleine
transformation. Mais nous devons aussi nous poser la question : qu’en est-il pour nous aujourd’hui ?
Comme dans toute famille en évolution, tout n’est pas parfait. Certains ont une chambre plus grande
que les autres. Certains meubles n’auront plus leur place. Certains cadres devront être placés
ailleurs. Certains vieilliront et chercheront le calme et la stabilité, alors que des jeunes viendront
s’ajouter pour tout chambouler. Il y aura peut-être des disputes ; frères et sœurs ne s’entendront pas
toujours. Dans cette famille, nous sommes tous orphelins, seuls avec notre veille Bible, et le recueil
de chants de notre héritage — et du pain et du vin.
Mais cette nouvelle famille saura faire preuve de vision, de patience et d’impatience, d’espoir et
d’assurance dans la puissance de l’Esprit à l’aider à faire face aux défis, réels et imaginaires. La tâche
peut paraître colossale, mais ensemble nous sommes plus forts et mieux aptes à affronter l’avenir.
Soyons courageux, nos sœurs et nos frères alors que nous grandissons ensembles dans la foi et
notre amour pour notre Église.
Comme nous ne pouvons nous empêcher de chanter, nous vous laissons avec les paroles de l’hymne

Tu sais bien pourquoi tu te trouv(es) ici, même si jamais on n’aura tout dit ; alors prends ta part des
rir(es) et des soucis ; nous formons une grande famille.
Dieu -- est avec nous dans ce lieu saint, comme un(e) maman qui nous prend sur son sein. Dieu nous
protège de sa douce main : nous formons une grande famille.
Recevons la Vie par le pain et le vin, de Jésus-Christ -- suivons le chemin ; c’est Dieu qui nous
accueille et nous soutient : nous formons une grande famille.
Chacune est comblée, et chacun accepté ; son joug est facile et son fardeau léger. Alors, viens
chanter, servir et célébrer : nous formons une grande famille.
