T H E VO L K SWA G E N G R O U P
The Volkswagen Group with its headquarters in Wolfsburg is
one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers and the
largest carmaker in Europe.
Due to difficult market conditions in 2015, the number of
Group vehicles delivered to customers dropped to 9.931 mil­
lion (2014: 10.137 million). The share of the world passenger
car ­market amounts to 12.3 percent.
In Western Europe, nearly one in four new cars (24.4 percent)
is made by the Volkswagen Group. Group sales revenue i­ n 2015
totaled €213 billion (2014: €202 billion), while negative earnings
after tax amounted to €–1.4 billion (2014: €11.1 billion).
The Group comprises twelve brands from seven European
countries: Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA,
Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen
Commercial Vehicles, Scania and MAN.
Each brand has its own character and operates as an in­
dependent entity on the market. The product spectrum ranges
from motorcycles to low-consumption small cars and luxury
vehicles. In the commercial vehicle sector, the products include
ranges from pick-ups, buses and heavy trucks.

The Volkswagen Group is also active in other fields of business,
manufacturing large-bore diesel engines for marine and
­stationary applications (turnkey power plants), turbochargers,
turbomachinery (steam and gas turbines), compressors and
chemical reactors. It also produces vehicle transmissions,
special gear units for wind turbines, slide bearings and
­couplings as well as testing systems for the mobility sector.
In addition, the Volkswagen Group offers a wide range of
financial services, including dealer and customer financing,
leasing, banking and insurance activities, and fleet manage­
ment.
The Group operates 119 production plants in 20 European
countries and a further 11 countries in the Americas, Asia
and Africa. Every weekday, 610,076 employees worldwide
produce nearly 42,000 vehicles, and work in vehicle-related
services or other fields of business. The Volks­wagen Group
sells its vehicles in 153 countries.

“One target area of the Volkswagen Group’s environmental strategy
is its efforts to preserve resources. The Group plans to extend these

Ferdinand Porsche’s blue-print
turned the dream of auto­motive
mobility for the masses into a
“people’s car”. The automobile
laid the foundation for a com­
pany which rapidly acquired
international significance after
the Second World War.
The motor of the “Wirtschafts­
wunder“ was air-cooled and
fitted at the rear of a car whose
distinctive silhouette made
Volkswagen a household name
all over the world, just as the
Transporter launched in 1950
became a much-loved work­
horse and camper.
Numerous production facilities
outside Europe were already
being set up in the 1950s to
bring the automaker closer to
the customer.
Having evolved into a German
automotive group with the
­acquisition of “Auto Union
GmbH” and “NSU Moto­ren­
werke AG” in the 1960s, the
dynamic market success of the
Passat, Golf and Polo post-1973
triggered further corporate
growth towards a multi-brand
group: SEAT and ŠKODA were
added in 1985 and 1991,
Bentley, Lamborghini and
Bugatti in 1998.
They were joined by the
legendary sports car maker
Porsche AG in 2012. The
Group also welcomed the
­motorcycle brand Ducati
­under its roof.
The Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles brand, the Scania
brand acquired in 2008 and the
MAN brand which was taken
over in 2012 with factories in
Europe, Africa and South
America provide a differen­
tiated range of products
spanning city vans, trucks and
busses to suit the most diverse
mobility requirements.
The financial services pro­
vided by Volkswagen Financial
Services AG, a company whose
roots go back as far as 1949,
also contribute to the auto­
motive success of the
Volkswagen Group.

tung des Deutschen Volks­
wagens mbH” is established
in Berlin.

Construction of the Volkswagen
plant east of Fallersleben be­
gins.

The company name is changed
to “Volkswagenwerk GmbH”.
Between 1939 and 1945,
the Volkswagen plant is re­
organized for the production
of arma­ments rather than
the production of civilian
­vehicles. The expanding
­armaments output of the
plant after summer 1940
leads the company to meet
most of its labour needs by
­using forced labour from
abroad. In late summer 1944,
almost two thirds of the
18,000-strong workforce is
made up of foreign forced
labourers.
