This project consists of the demolition of the existing building and the construction of a new 4-storey building consisting of 2 floors of artist studio space and 4 no. 1 bedroom residential flats above. The existing building consists of a former light industrial building. The main ground floor studio space has a large open plan space and above is a smaller studio space. The proposal provides around 300 sqm of new studio space over 2 floors. This extra space is vital for the clients (who are major British contemporary artists), especially when undertaking larger and more involved works when there is a need to employ more assistants and support staff. During design development a feasibility study was undertaken to determine viability of the project. Working with a cost consultant early, allowed an understanding that a new build project would most likely prove to be a better form of redevelopment in respect to time, cost and deliverability. The design of the new building reponds to the surrounding context of former light industrial buildings. The new development has only one elevation that can be seen from the street and the public realm. Therefore the design attempts to engage with a clear idea of public and private. The more private residential element is set back from the brick clad art studio/commercial element. The doors and windows of the ground and first floor are designed to be ‘active’ or ‘kinetic’ through the use of movable screens, shutters, and awnings in a manner which is integral to the design of the elevation and practical in terms of legibility and security. This project consists of the demolition of existing portacabins and the erection of a new building to accomodate office space and some storage space for a mosque complex. The existing portacabin is of poor quality and the client wants to improve the energy efficiency and the appearance of the space. The new building is a two-storey timber frame construction on top of a new lightweight concrete slab with piled foundations that mitigate any impact on the tree roots. The timber frame construction is clad in sweet chestnut timber cladding and a green roof. The proposed windows are positionned in relation with the working stations (hight which allows to view the outside when sitting at a desk) and the need of the users. From the outside, the elevation gives the idea of random squared windows. It is a simple design that is discreet and avoids being garish or, unnecessarily ostentatious. Importance has been given to improving the appearance of this part of the mosque complex and to provide a far more practical and usable ancillary space. The proposed development is located in a Conservation Area but the existing building is not listed. The existing building is an old concrete clad shelter without windows. It is not used and the project is to demolish it and erect a new 2-storey building consisting of 2 no 2 bedroom residential town houses. The proposal aims to enhance the area by following existing proportion and scales to suggest the appearance of well built townhouses. The elevational treatment is responsive to the surrounding context but also the internal arrangement of both houses that have been designed to be suitable for young families. 39 Groombridge Road Fourthspace Ltd Normes constructives - Etude de budget - Appel d’offre - Construction 240 m2 Londres, UK Mai 2015 Building Regulation - Cost Plan - Tender - Construction 240 sqm London, UK May 2015 New double glazed aluminium frame pivot door To Garden New full height fixed aluminium frame double glazed window See drawing 292T14 and scope of works. Existing timber balustrade to upper floors Existing timber stairs to upper floors Le projet consiste en l’extension d’une maison typique anglaise. This project is the extension of a terraced house. The client is a family with two young children. Few years ago, Fourthspace already designed the office on the last floor and the addition of a wide dormer window on the roof. The house is located in East London, right next to a park that it is possible to access directly from the rear garden. The small kitchen is not suitable anymore for the family and they would like to improve it. A rear extension has been designed to receive a much bigger kitchen and dining room. A glazed roof is to be installed on the side, to bring as much light as possible. The partition walls are to be striped to allow an open space on the ground floor of the house. A pod has been designed to articulate the living room at the front of the house and the new kitchen at the back. This pod allows a lot of storage and a new toilet. The basement is also refurbished to become a big laundry and storage space. As a display of their work, every detail has to be thought about in this space. Working on details, especially for the bathroom was very important. Lights, shadow gaps and birch make this space feel warm. This project is the refurbishment of the tax building in Saint Denis. The building was getting old and had a lot of energy and thermal issues. The main facade was always in the sun and the architect team had to find a solution to improve the space inside. The idea was to put bespoke veils on the facade to reduce the amount of light but not the view to the outside. On the rest of the building, where needed, some coloured brise-soleil are put on the windows with space and angle that is calculated so the sun does not go directly inside the nuilding during the whole year. The courtyard use to have a concrete floor, so it was very warm and people did not really use it. The unused fountain is transformed into a big planter where big palmtrees and fern are planted. Plants help to cool down the building naturally. The client bought this flat on the ground floor of a building next to Montmartre to refurbish it and add value to the space. The existing mezzanine in the main space is to be demolished to get the nice ceiling height back. A new mezzanine is proposed on top of the kitchen and bathroom to put a bed. A glazed roof will provide a nice light to this appartment stuck between bigger buildings. The dining table is located next to the kitchen and people can enjoy the double height while having diner. Timber floor with herringbone pattern will provide a warm and cosy feeling to this small flat. Light designed stairs add poesy to the space and also some storage for the kitchen area. Related to a previous research on the housing concern of the large scale territory of Geneva-Bellegarde, the aim of the master thesis was to work on the issue of living space for the poorest people on this diffuse territory. This host structure for single occupants is coupled with public amenities for residents as well as villagers. A research on cohabitation and relationship between the parts (space and humans) was implemented. The socialization has to be soft and has to allow various levels of intimacy with others (people, objects, nature, landscape). Lonely people need to get moments when they can share. But it is also necessary for their balance to be able to be alone. The level of intimacy is related to the appropriation of the space, the affective relationship between someone and a place. The building creates limits, thresholds, ways between spaces. These tools allow different levels of intimacy according to the use and the space. The typology and the internal organization of the building determine the intimacy and give distance or proximity or depth in the space felt by the users. Openings, thresholds, heights, thickness, textures, materiality, allow a hierarchy and a difference between spaces. All the spaces within the building are related to each other, which creates frictions, expansions, which are their own characteristics. This project is implemented within the framework of student experiments during the Lights Festival in Lyon in 2008 was built by students in the “Grands Ateliers de l’Isle d’Abeau” with simple raw materials. It was exposed for four days to visitors. A variable color lighting is placed in each of the cabin. The screen made by the shower curtain leaves us appear four figures. Shower stalls, out of their original environment become huge lanterns.
