She treated everyone with deep reverence and respect, seeing in them the image of the suffering Jesus. NEW D0538 MOTHER TERESA Social Studies U.S. History World History Language Arts Born Agnese Bojaxhiu, Albanian Mother Teresa (1910-97) worked as a Roman Catholic missionary from an early age, but yearned to serve her god through action rather than contemplation. She was sent to India, became a teacher, then a nun, and after considerable struggle, founded a new order, The Missionaries of Charity, with almost no resources. In the most poverty-stricken city in India, Calcutta, she and her few sisters began helping the poor, sick, orphaned and dying from the streets. Their work and numbers expanded and became more famous in the 1970’s. Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. By the time of her death, her order had 4,000 sisters operating 610 missions in 123 countries. Despite some criticisms about her toward the end of her life, this diminutive person is widely remembered for her great determination and courage by helping the helpless. I, S 25 Min.
