Dear participant,
We are honored to welcome you to the Northern France Nutrition-Cluster for NutrEvent’s
4th edition. First international event entirely dedicated to innovation and research in the field
of Food, Nutrition & Health, NutrEvent 2015 is undoubtedly the refreshing event of the year
in this sector.
This initiative launched by Eurasanté, Lille Grand Palais & the Nutrition Health Longevity
Cluster could not have been possible without the commitment of more than 30 sponsors
and supporters. We are grateful to them for believing in this project since the beginning and
supporting its development. We would also like to thank the City of Lille for hosting the fourth
edition of this event. Moreover, we thank all the institutional partners of NutrEvent: the NordPas de Calais Region, the Nord Department and the European Metropole of Lille.
The obvious evolution of the sector requires adaptation to transform the issues and go from
threats to development opportunities. NutrEvent has been conceived to play an active role
in this evolution, thanks to an ambitious goal: stimulating innovation in the sector of Food,
Nutrition & Health by filling in the gap between research and market.
NutrEvent 2015 offers complementary activities including a partnering platform, a conference
program, an exhibition area, a contest rewarding innovation in Food, Nutrition & Health.
Academics, industry stakeholders and business developers, private investors and public
organizations, marketing managers, regulatory specialists… We are very honored and proud
to see that you all joined us today to take part in these activities. Thanks to the diversity and
the quality of your profiles, NutrEvent 2015 looks certain to generate once again excellent
collaborating opportunities that will fulfill the wishes of everyone.
We wish you a fruitful and enjoyable two days event full of meetings and partnership opportunities and hope to see you again during the next edition!

Balancing Taste, Nutrition, Cost and Use
Nutrition for health and wellbeing is the main driver of innovation in the food and drink industry. Some of the
latest scientific researches done in the field are pointing out the potential of creating healthier, more balanced
foods, giving the key for improving nutrition and increasing food production, while reducing waste. However,
how do everyone’s interests align? Can we find the right balance?

The industry is expecting to see “free-from” foods increase in popularity for both allergy and health reasons, particularly in the gluten-free
markets. But reformulating existing recipes to remove gluten, fat, sugar,… will remain a challenge as manufacturers look to balance
consumers’ expectations of product quality without compromising the price, taste or texture of end products. Let’s analyze the
consumer demands and understand the challenges and opportunities of this market for the industry.

Human health at the population level is closely intertwined with plant and animal health through our food chain. Animal health and
FEED, determine both the safety (e.g. incidence of zoonosis) and nutritional profile (e.g. fatty acid composition) of animal based
food products like dairy and meat. Similarly, plants produce a range of complex chemical compounds or secondary metabolites
which act both in plant defence and in plant food nutritional profile (e.g. flavonoids and carotenoids). The Onehealth approach
holds that feed and production systems which maximise farm animal and crop plant health will also improve the nutritional profile
of our food products.
Let’s analyze how we could improve the nutritional profile of whole plant foods and also provide solutions for improved feed-stock
for bioactive ingredient production.

Considering the number of people on the planet and an increasing demand for meat and dairy proteins from the newly emerging
markets, the problem we will face in the coming years is worldwide protein shortage, as we are fast running out of natural sources.
Therefore, everyone’s attention turns today towards alternative sources of proteins such as algae, seaweed or insects, or even
residual streams from current production processes ( ex: sugar beet crowns in the sugar process). In addition, the protein market
for humans is closely linked with the animal feed markets.
However the development of these alternative products is subject to a lot of factors. Let’s discuss with leading academic and
industry experts:
• What is a good protein source and which are the criteria of evaluation?
• Its acceptability to people
• How easily can it be processed and at what cost?

When acquiring or marketing any new ingredient, product or process the decision-making process involves legal, financial, commercial, marketing and quality and safety issues. Therefore a due diligence process is put in place through making enquiries into
a business that is the subject of a merger with, or an acquisition by, another business or launching a new product on the market.
Let’s discuss with our panelists all the issues related on one hand to merger and acquisitions and on the other hand to launching

Keeping bones, joints and muscles healthy is important, as problems involving these tissues can affect the mobility and quality of

lifestyle choices (as good nutrition, regular exercise) also have a high impact.
Let’s discuss the latest advances in sciences and innovations concerning the most promising ingredients in musculoskeletal health
and what is their impact in preventing age-related issues, such as osteoporosis and sarcopenia.

Research over the past 5 years has provided exciting evidence for the influence of dietary factors on specific molecular systems
and mechanisms that maintain mental function. Therefore, nutritional strategies to prevent or slow cognitive decline could have a
tremendous public health impact. Previous evidence suggests the preventative role of nutrients and foods, either singly or in
combination, through specific patterns of intake on reduction in cognitive decline.
But where are we in terms of scientific evidence today and product innovations how can the challenges of the regulatory body be

As the consumer demand for nutritious foods is growing, the food industry began evaluating and revising the composition of their
processed foods as well as the processing methods in order to improve nutritional and health effects. In order for a bioactive
compound to be successfully added to a food, it must still be in active form when reaching the gastrointestinal tract, where it is
assimilated. The challenges are in ensuring optimal nutritional properties for these compounds.
Let’s discuss what types of processes are available and how they are applied in the food industry.

If ten years ago there were just a few passionate researchers tackling this issue, personalized nutrition has become today a featured
topic with several special articles on nutrigenomics published in Nature. Even though genes are not the answer to all the questions,
advances in research promise a new understanding of the connections between nutrients and long-term health. These results may
become the future tools for personalized nutritional counseling for health maintenance and disease prevention.
But what is the impact on the marketplace? What is the consumer awareness? What place holds the food industry in personalized

Nutrition policy is one of the drivers of innovation in food.
Arguably the most important event in global nutrition policy in
this decade is the Second International Conference on Nutrition
from 19th-21st November 2014. Organized by FAO and WHO, in
follow up of the first ICN organized in 1992, it will bring together
ministers of health and ministers of agriculture of FAO and WHO
member states, who jointly will determine the global nutrition
policy that will drive the nutrition policies in their countries for the
next decades. In turn, these nutrition policies will drive innovation
in food such as product reformulation; therefore, the private
sector has shown great interest in providing input into ICN2.
The session will be chaired by Dr. Nico van, who is one of the
three key private sector representatives in ICN2. On behalf of
the International Dairy Federation, and in agreement with the red
meat, poultry, egg and feed sectors, he represents the global
livestock sector in ICN2.
