U.S. Navy planning to extend service life of F/A-18 fleet

The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command
plans to give a service life extension
program contract to Boeing for its fleet of
F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft. If the plan
moves forward, Boeing will provide
engineering, design, verification and
validation services to the aircraft, with a
focus on extending the service life of the
plane’s aft fuselage past its current
6,000-hour flight requirement.
“Only one responsible source and no
other supplies or services will satisfy
agency requirements,” NAVAIR’s notice
posted on the Federal Business
Opportunities website read. Boeing is
currently the only designer, developer,
manufacturer and integrator for the F/A18 aircraft, and will be the only contractor
used to perform the modifications if a
contract is given.
The Navy’s plan to keep the fighter in
service longer than initially planned
comes in response to delays in the F-35
program. The Lockheed Martin F-35C,
the variant made for the Navy, is
expected to achieve initial operating
capability in 2019, two years after the
current 6,000-hour service lives for the

The Indian government is expected to
give final approval to a large defence
systems deal with Israel within a
month, covering equipment including
Rafael Litening targeting pods and
Spice 250 precision-guided bombs
worth $500 million.
The Pentagon hasn’t had updated
information on maintenance of the F35 jet since May because a Lockheed
Martin Corp. database doesn’t meet
new
government
cybersecurity
requirements,
according to
the
Defense Department’s testing office.
According to sources related to the
deal, the contract will include 164
Litening pods, likely to be carried by
the Indian air force’s Sukhoi Su-30
fighters. It will also include a large
number of Spice 250s, add the
sources. Rafael is promoting its newgeneration Litening 5, which can
detect targets from long range and
support intelligence, surveillance,
target acquisition and reconnaissance
activities.
“Because of this non-compliance
government personnel have not been
able to access the database via
government networks,” and that’s
preventing a Pentagon-Lockheed
team “from holding the planned
reviews of maintenance records,”
Michael
Gilmore,
the
Defense
Department’s testing chief, said in an
assessment of the F-35, the costliest
U.S. weapons program.
The wing kit-equipped Spice 250 glide
bomb offers a standoff-range strike
capability of up to 54nm (100km). The
