PREVIEW : TOULOUSE FC - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS
Toulouse FC - Olympique Lyonnais Feature Preview
Olympique Lyonnais will need to end a decade-long wait for a victory in Toulouse on Saturday if they are to boost their bid to finish in
the top two.
Though OL dominated the first decade of the millenium, even the all-conquering Lyon side that featured Juninho Pernambucano,
Florent Malouda et al struggled in the Rose City. Sidney Govou got the only goal of the game when Lyon won in Toulouse in
November 2005, the last time they emerged from the fixture with maximum points. Indeed, they have only found the net there once in
nine visits since, that coming in last season's 2-1 defeat early in the 2014-15 campaign.
Yet, there will be optimism within Bruno Génésio's squad that they can improve on that sorry record. OL are - champions Paris
Saint-Germain aside - the division's form team since the turn of the year, and though they saw a run of three straight wins ended with
a 1-1 draw at home to fellow podium challengers OGC Nice last time out, the fact they secured a potentially precious point with a late
goal having played 65 minutes with ten men left their coach purring.
"I'll retain how proud my players are. I'm proud of what they did. They put in an enormous amount of effort and showed such mental
strength," said Génésio, who saw Alexandre Lacazette level in the closing stages after Maxwel Cornet had seen a first-half red card.
"Of course there's disappointment that we didn't take three points against a direct rival.
"We didn't start well. We managed to turn things around. I've got top players, competitors. We were very dangerous at the end and
with a bit of luck we could have taken the three points in an extraordinary atmosphere. We're still masters of our destiny. We'll now
wait for the weekend results."
Those results saw AS Monaco win to move back into second place, two points clear of Lyon, and put themselves in pole position to
join PSG in the UEFA Champions League group stages next season while OL - should they finish third - would face the potential
banana skins of the third qualifying round and a two-legged play-off to make it a Ligue 1 trio in European club football's premier
competition.
Toulouse's ambitions are somewhat more down-to-earth. For Pascal Dupraz's men, mere top-flight survival would be a monumental
achievement. Nine points adrift of safety after a winless streak of nine games, TFC have narrowed that gap to a more-manageable
three points with three wins and just a single defeat in their last five league outings.
They would have been just a single point shy of the safety of 17th place had Zargo Touré not fired home an added time equaliser to
deny TFC victory at FC Lorient last weekend.
"My team has the desire to go forward, that's an incredible quality. We came close to winning against a very good Lorient side. And
the worst thing is that the equaliser was a magical goal from Touré. I don't know if he's ever scored such a beautiful goal in his
career," said Dupraz, who had seen in-form Wissam Ben Yedder open the scoring with his seventh goal in as many outings. "I call on
the women of Toulouse to kick their husbands off the sofa and come and fill the stands at the Stadium against Lyon. It's not too bad to
have seen three wins and ten goals in our last three home games. Now, I'm obsessed with picking up the three points against Lyon."

Week 35
Toulouse FC - Olympique Lyonnais
Toulouse FC - Olympique Lyonnais
- HISTORY: Toulouse FC have the edge historically in this fixture, winning 18 of their 34 home league games against Olympique
Lyonnais. OL have triumphed on just six occasions.
- OL have not won a league game in Toulouse in nine attempts (3D 6L), and have scored just a single goal in that time.
- OL's last win in Toulouse came on 5 November, 2005 - Sidney Govou (10') got the only goal of the game.
- LAST SEASON: Toulouse triumphed 2-1 when the pair met in Week 2 - Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro (10') and Wissam ben Yedder (45')
both scored before Alexandre Lacazette (75') pulled one back. Lacazette scored twice (14', 27') in Lyon's 3-0 victory in Week 20,
Nabil Fekir (48') got the other goal.
- THIS SEASON: OL took the points in Week 11 with another 3-0 win - Sergi Darder (18'), Mathieu Valbuena (69') and Maxwel Cornet
(90+4') got the goals.
- TOULOUSE FC
- GENERAL: Toulouse came into the weekend in second-bottom spot in Ligue 1 with 33 points from 34 games, having won seven,
drawn 12 and lost 15 of their games to date. They are three points from safety with just four matches remaining.
- This time last season, Toulouse were 14th with 39 points, two points clear of the bottom three. They are enduring their worst season
since winning promotion back to the top flight in 2003.
- TFC have been in the bottom half of the table for all bar the first two weeks of the campaign and have been in the relegation zone
ever since losing 3-0 at Olympique Lyonnais in Week 11, in late October.
- Last weekend, Toulouse drew 1-1 at FC Lorient. Ben Yedder's 49th-minute goal looked like it would give them a third successive
win, but Zargo Touré (90+1') smashed home a late equaliser.
- The Toulouse line-up against Lorient (4-3-3): Lafont; Yago, Tisserand, Kana-Biyik (Ninkov 72'), Moubandjé; Doumbia (Bodiger 89'),
Blin, Didot (Trejo 58'); Regattin, Ben Yedder, Braithwaite
- Alban Lafont became the youngest goalkeeper ever to start a Ligue 1 game when he lined up for his debut against OGC Nice in
November at the age of 16 years and 10 months.
- Toulouse have won three and lost just one of their last five league games. They had gone nine Ligue 1 games (3D 9L) without a win
before defeating Garonne rivals Girondins de Bordeaux 4-0 in Week 30.
- They went 13 Ligue 1 games without a win after beating AS Saint-Etienne 2-1 on the opening weekend of the campaign.
- Dominique Arribagé was relieved of his duties after the defeat to Rennes. In 37 Ligue 1 games in charge of TFC, he managed just
eight wins and 35 points.
- TFC have scored 39 goals this season, the 12th-best record, though 11 of those strikes have come in the last five matches. They
have failed to score in 11 outings, while they have scored three goals in just four games, including in two of their last five.
- They had scored just four goals in nine league games before the Week 30 goalrush against Bordeaux.
- Ben Yedder is their leading scorer in Ligue 1 with 15 goals, including seven in his last seven league games. Martin Braithwaite has
ten with Oscar Trejo the next-best with three.
- Akpa-Akpro and Ben Yedder have both provided four assists.
- TFC have conceded 50 goals. Only three clubs had let in more coming into the weekend. They have kept just six clean sheets,
though three of those have come in the last five league games. They have conceded three or more goals on six separate occasions,
including in a 5-0 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain in Week 13.
- No Toulouse player has featured in every Ligue 1 game this season. Braithwaite has featured the most with 32 appearances (29
starts) with Ben Yedder playing 31 times (30 starts). Akpa-Akpro, Trejo and Adrien Regattin have all featured 30 times.
- Toulouse have picked up 10 red cards this season, the joint-highest tally in the division (with SC Bastia): Aleksandar Pesic (v AS
Saint-Etienne, Wk 1), Uros Spajic (v SM Caen, Wk 2), Óscar Trejo (v Girondins de Bordeaux, Wk 6), Steeve Yago, Jacques François

Week 35
Toulouse FC - Olympique Lyonnais
- OL have conceded 35 goals, with only four clubs having let in fewer coming into the weekend. They have kept 14 clean sheets but
have conceded three or more goals in four separate matches, including the 5-1 drubbing at Paris Saint-Germain in Week 18.
- No Lyon player has featured in every Ligue 1 game this season, although Anthony Lopes has started 33 of 34 matches.
- Lopes was the only OL player to start all 38 Ligue 1 matches last season, although Tolisso (37 starts/1 substitute appearance) also
appeared in every game. Tolisso and Jordan Ferri have both featured 31 times, Lacazette 30.
- Cornet has made 15 of his 28 appearances from the bench.

- COUPE DE LA LIGUE: OL were eliminated in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 away to holders Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des

- TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: As Ligue 1 runners-up last season, Lyon were invited to play a Paris Saint-Germain side who won all
the domestic trophies going in the traditional season-opener. They were beaten 2-0 in the Canadian city of Montréal.
- CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Lyon finished bottom of Group H with just four points from six games, their only win a 2-0 success away to
Valencia CF in Spain after their elimination had already been confirmed.
- JANUARY TRANSFERS IN: None.
- OUT: Milan Bisevac to SS Lazio (ITA); Claudio Beauvue to RC Celta Vigo (ESP); Lindsay Rose on loan to FC Lorient.
- TEAM NEWS: Jérémy Morel was an unused substitute against Nice after recovering from an ankle problem. Aldo Kalulu (adductors)
and Steed Malbranque both missed the game. Fekir could make his first league start since August.
Toulouse FC
- Toulouse have never won the French league. Their highest-ever finish is third, which they achieved in 1986-87, and again in
2006-07. The latter performance qualified the TFC for their only Champions League campaign to date (eliminated in the third
qualifying round by Liverpool (ENG), 5-0 on aggregate).
- Toulouse's only top-tier silverware remains the 1957 Coupe de France, although they have been crowned Ligue 2 champions on
three occasions (1953, '81 and 2003).
- After finishing 17th in Ligue 1 in 2001, TFC were relegated to the third tier by France's financial watchdog, the DNCG. They returned
in 2003 and have been in Ligue 1 ever since.
- Last season Toulouse finished 17th in Ligue 1 with 42 points, a place and five points above the drop zone. They were knocked out
of both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France to Garonne rivals Bordeaux, falling 3-1 at home in the round of 32 of the
former competition and 2-1 at Bordeaux in the round of 64 of the latter.

Week 35
Toulouse FC - Olympique Lyonnais
- Toulouse appointed Pascal Dupraz, 53, as coach at the start of March on a deal through to the summer of 2018. Dupraz had been
out of management and working as a television pundit since leaving Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC in the summer of 2015. He had been
sporting director at Evian before becoming coach in 2012 - he kept them up two seasons running before being relegated last year.
- Dupraz replaced Dominique Arribagé, who was relieved of his duties after just under a year in charge. A former Toulouse and
Rennes defender, he has returned to his previous position upstairs.
- Toulouse play at the municipally-owned Stadium, situated on Ile du Ramier in the centre of the city. The ground hosted matches at
the 1998 World Cup and has been redeveloped ahead of Euro 2016.
Olympique Lyonnais
- Founded in August 1950, Lyon won three Coupes de France (1964, 1967, 1973) and a Coupe de la Ligue (2001) before winning a
record seven Ligue 1 titles 2002-08. They also won the Coupe de France in 2008. They won a fifth Coupe de France and the Trophée
des Champions in 2012.
- Les Gones finished second in 2014-15, their highest finish since 2010 and their best points tally since their last title win in 2008. As
runners-up they qualified for the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2011.
- Lyon were Champions League semi-finalists in 2010, losing to Bayern Munich.
- Alexandre Lacazette was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year in Ligue 1 in 2014-15 topping the scoring chart with 27 goals, beating
the previous club record of 25, set by André Guy in 1969.
- Lyon began the season at the Stade Municipal de Gerland, but they inaugurated a new, privately funded, 58,512-capacity Grand
Stade in the Lyon suburb of Décines-Charpieu in January 2016. It will host matches at Euro 2016, including a semi-final.
- Bruno Génésio was appointed coach in December 2015 to replace the sacked Hubert Fournier, who left after a year and a half at
the helm. Génésio, 49, was promoted from his role as an assistant coach, which he had occupied for the previous nine years. A Lyon
native, he spent the bulk of his playing career at the club before moving to FC Martigues in 1995.
- President Jean-Michel Aulas took over the club in 1987 when Lyon were in the second tier.
Notable former Lyon players include Bernard Lacombe, who also coached the club and now acts as special advisor to Aulas,
Raymond Domenech, Sonny Anderson, Juninho Pernambucano, Florent Malouda, Karim Benzema and Eric Abidal.
