The country
Surface : 2 millions km2. The
country has about 13 000 islands
stretched upon 5 000 km from
East to West. The neighboring
countries are Malaysia. Singapore,
Phillipines, Papua-New Guinea
and Australia. The main islands
are : Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan
(Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes), Irian
Barat (West Irian) and the Mollucas.
Volcanoes are the main cha
racteristics of the countryside : 50
of them among the 300 existing
are still active. The population is
about 130 millions mainly of M a
lay origin.
Indonesia was famous for
the spices and Portuguese, Spa
niards, British, Dutch fought for
its control. Indonesia became
independant from the Dutch in
1945, after the Japanese surren
10
der, but the Republic completed
their national integrity in 1962
with the release of West Irian by
the Dutch.
The country is one of the
most exciting in Asia for tourism
where unspoiled tribes in remote
areas of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan,
Irian and Timor can be seen.
Beautiful landscapes are plentiful
here as Lake Toba in Sumatra, the
volcanoes in East and West Java
and the pearl of the archipelago :
BALI : « The Gods Island » with
its Hindouist culture.
The official religion is Islam :
80 96 of the population is moslem,
the rest is Christian, hindouist,
shintoist. Many tribes are howe
ver animist, among them the
famous head hunters, the Dayack
of Borneo.
The archipelago fauna is
quite impressive with elephants

and tigers in Sumatra and Java,
orang-utangs (from the Malay
People of the forest), rhinoceros,
black panthers in Borneo and the
prehistoric huge lizard (up to
7 meters'long). the Varan of Ko
modo Island.
The hindouist culture in Java
has left m any traces, among
them the most famous hindouist
vestiges : the temple of Borobodur
(8th century).

VISIT TO HEAD-HUNTERS
by Crazy Casey
The day we left our resthouse in
Kuala Belait was a nice summer’s
day. It promised to be a long
summer. The day before, every
thing was prepared for this difficult
trip ; James did a last check-up of
his 48” and gave it an extra polish.
Björn walked around with a « let
ter box » from France. (Until to
day he never showed me what was
inside but I think it was his

was hoisted inside but lost his box
of letters from France. And Beve
rage took whisky for the shock.
This was the first incident and I
hoped the last one.
By noon we arrived in LIMBANG
and we were welcomed on the
jetty by an old Chinese who could
be the twin brother of Beverage
because of his dental state. This
chap turned out to be the owner of
the only restaurant in the village.
W e thought it might be a good idea
to have some food before we
carried on our expedition.
So, we sat down and studied the
exotic menu : James ordered Scots
Porridge Oats, Bjorn fancied
W hale Stew, Beverage was too
drunk to be bothered. Myself was
thinking about Boerekool Met
Worst, which is very delicious as
you all know. The Chinese man
bowed, took the order and came
back five minutes later with all our
delicasies, which turned out to be
nothing but « flied lic e » —
translated Fried Rice — . We
swore in three different languages
and many more. The Chinese said :
« Flied lice vely good, Sah ! ».
So we packed our gear and off we
went into the jungle. After two
hours trekking, the jungle became
very quiet. All the animals seemed
to disappear and we could sense
that death was very close, which

was true because, just at that
moment, James flattened a great
hairy mosquito with his 48”. Then,
at once, we were surrounded by
the head-hunters we had been
searching for. They marched us off
to their longhouse where the Chief
(named « Coupeur de têtes ») was
waiting for us. He greeted us with
the words « Hi , N utters». We
replied simply with « Hello !
Coupe ! ».
We came quickly to the subject of
work. He didn’t seem very interes
ted in heads, but nowadays they
concentrate on other things (how
can I explain in decent language
w hat I mean ? Well, it is the unit
we use to duplicate our race). So, I
decided that this market was scarce
but I could offer him frog legs in
great quantities.
These head-hunters live in a long
house. This house is quite long,
therefore they call it « Long
house ». If the house was short,
then they would call it a short
house. I hope this is clear. So. the
Chief invited us into his long house
and we sat down. He asked us
what our problem was. So. we told
him that we had an increase of
hopeless cases and we wanted his
help. He said he was very expe
rienced and showed me when we
knocked me on the head with his
Parang (knife) and told me that 1
was cracked, which showed him to
be a connaisseur. Because, when 1
was baby incidentally my mother
dropped a coconut in the cradle
which cracked my skull.
Unbelievable that a native far
away in the jungle tells you that
after 36 years 1 was cracked. Any
way , the Chief flicked his fingers
and they brought us rice-wine. He
poured the wine into bamboo cups
and lifted his cup. « Skol ». said
Björn. The fool ! Because I saw a
flicker in the chief s eye ! « Skull ».
said the Chief and dreamed to
himself. The night came fast and
when I was dozing off I heard far
away the sound of a grindstone.
W hen daylight came, I noticed that
my dear friends were staring at me
in a funny way, with a tremendous
shock.
I realised that it was only their
heads stuck on poles. I could easely
recognize Beverage by the fact that
his one only tooth was clearly
visible. Now, I must finish this
report whilst awaiting my fate at
the hands of the merciless nut
hunters.

After months of thorough engineering, gallons of sweat

has come up with a new process* for painting the usually

below how simple it is...
The secret is simple, the result certain :
Have a truck. Load the separator on it. Ask the truck
driver to take a sharp turn on the left (on the right if you
prefer) while running down a kerb, and that’s it.
P.S. Of course minor repairs may have to be carried out
