Invitation to all JECI-MIEC-movements and friends to pray for Ukraine and our
friends from OBNOVA
(by Rev. Dr. Markus Wasserfuhr, European Chaplain)
Dear friends,
You probably all have heard about the difficult situation Ukraine is facing at the moment.
JECI-MIEC wanted to go to Ukraine and have a Colloquium there… unfortunately, we had to
cancel this event.
It was planned that the event started on Sunday, 23rd of March – since we could not come to
Ukraine, we propose to hold a prayer on that day in your movement. Ideally at 19:00am so
that you can be sure, that elsewhere in Europe as well, students are joining your prayer – (but:
if 19:00am is no good time, feel free to choose another time or even date).
If you can have a mass for this occasion, that would be great – in this case pray for Ukraine
and our friends from OBNOVA after the Creed in the intentions.
If you can´t have a mass and have to “organize” a prayer on your own, the following
suggestion might be helpful:
1) Taizé-Song: Dans nos obscurité
http://www.taize.fr/spip.php?page=chant&song=316&lang=en
Light a candle (or several candles) while you sing this song
2) Psalm: 130
[here´s the English translation:
Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD;
2
Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
3
If you, LORD, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4
But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
5
I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6
I wait for the Lord

more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
7
Israel, put your hope in the LORD,
for with the LORD is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8
He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.]
3) Reading: Mt 5,3-12 – the beatitudes
4) a song; for example: Ubi caritas
http://www.taize.fr/spip.php?page=chant&song=504&lang=en
5) silence
Although God never stops trying to communicate with us, this is never in order to impose. The
voice of God is often heard only in a whisper, in a breath of silence. Remaining in silence in
God’s presence, open to the Holy Spirit, is already prayer.
6) intentions (for example: for justice and peace in Ukraine; for courage and comfort for our
friends from OBNOVA; for a peaceful solution of the conflict with Russia; for the victims of
the demonstrations, their families and friends)
7) There should exist a translation of the following prayer in (almost) all languages, we are
sure you´ll find a translation as well in your language.
Dove è odio, fa' ch'io porti l'Amore.
Dove è offesa, ch'io porti il Perdono.
Dove è discordia, ch'io porti l'Unione.

Dando, che si riceve;
Perdonando, che si è perdonati;
Morendo, che si resuscita a Vita Eterna.
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, truth;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
8) Our father
9) Concluding song: for example Stay with us
