THE HEIGHT OF PASSION
The founder of Julien Coudray 1518 is regarded as a curiosity in the industry. His watchmaking experience spanning several decades and
his very high standard sub-contracting work have enabled him to forge a solid reputation, but what is coming as such a surprise now is
the delirious venture in which he has launched himself. This is about the creation of a watchmaking name that is as pure as is his own
passion. Fine materials, traditional craftsmanship and artistic initiatives co-exist within a team that is united around this self-taught
watchmaking guru who prides himself on manufacturing everything in-house. We take a closer look.
TG : Mr LAMARCHE, you run IMH which is up to its ears in activity. So why Julien Coudray 1518?
FG : I am someone who is never satisfied. I wanted to create my watches. Real watches that tell no lies and that are created entirely in-house
by craftsmen at the service of customers. The make was founded in 2008 and launched in 2012 with its first collection. The name comes from the
watchmaker to King François 1er who shaped the first spring-loaded portable movements using a metal plaque. The idea was to push my team to go
exceed their limitations by creating watches that could have been made 500 years ago, were the means to do so to have existed then.

Le fondateur de Julien Coudray 1518 est regardé par la profession comme une curiosité. Son expérience horlogère de plusieurs décennies
et son travail en sous-traitance de très haut niveau lui ont forgé une réputation solide, mais ce qui étonne aujourd’hui c’est cette folle
aventure dans laquelle il s’est lancé. La création d’une marque horlogère aussi pure que sa passion. Matériaux nobles, métiers traditionnels,
et démarche artistique cohabitent au sein d’une équipe soudée autour de ce gourou horloger autodidacte qui met un point d’honneur à
tout fabriquer en interne. Découverte.

Thierry GASQUEZ : Monsieur LAMARCHE, vous dirigez IMH qui déborde d’activité. Alors pourquoi Julien Coudray 1518 ?
Fabien LAMARCHE : Je suis un éternel insatisfait. Je voulais créer mes montres. Des montres vraies, sans mensonge, réalisées entièrement en
interne par des artisans au service des clients. La marque a été fondée en 2008 et lancée en 2012 avec une première collection.
Son nom vient de cet artisan horloger du Roi François 1er qui a façonné les premiers mouvements portatifs à ressort à partir d’une plaque de

métal. Le but étant de pousser mon équipe à se dépasser pour créer des montres qui auraient pu être réalisées il y a 500 ans si les moyens
avaient existé.

TG : How are your watches created?
F.L. : I have admired and created watches for others a lot. I have learnt a lot from the
requirements of my watchmaking customers. Today, with time, patience and sweat,
I create from sketches on paper or from ideas that I test on my machines.
I persevere to the extent that I cannot sleep unless my research or my testing turn into
something that is possible. Then I put my idea forward to my team and I listen very hard
to what they have to say. Their opinions are important.
Then we launch the piece: new sketches, tests, 3D constructions, mapping, checks,
creating prototypes of pieces than watch prototypes, modifications, improvements, new
prototypes, tests, decoration, determining the price and then launching the 00 version.
It’s a wonderful new adventure every time.
TG : Comment sont créées vos montres ?

F.L. : J’ai beaucoup admiré et crée des montres pour d’autres. J’ai tout
appris de l’exigence de mes clients horlogers. Aujourd’hui, à force de
temps, de patience et de sueur je crée à partir de croquis que je pose
sur le papier ou d’idées que je teste sur mes machines.
Je suis persévérant au point de ne pouvoir dormir que si ma recherche
ou mon test est rendu possible. Ensuite je propose mon idée à mon
équipe et suis très à l’écoute. Leurs avis sont importants. Puis nous
lançons la machine : nouveaux croquis, tests, construction 3D, mises
en plan, contrôles, prototypage des pièces puis prototypes horlogers,
modifications, améliorations, nouveaux prototypes, tests, décoration,
définition du coût, et lancement de la version 00. A chaque fois c’est
une nouvelle belle aventure.
TG : How many samples are you making available today?
F.L. : We have 2 models ‘visible’. The 1528 Manufactura and the 1515
Competentia. We are completing the range with personalized works
and are expecting the release of a Classica 1548 model at Basle and an
automatic 15XX model in a few months’ time.
TG : Combien de références proposez vous aujourd’hui ?
F.L. : Nous avons 2 modèles « visibles ». La 1528 Manufactura et la 1515
Competentia. Nous complétons cette gamme par des œuvres personnalisées
et prévoyons la sortie d’un modèle Classica 1548 à Bâle et d’un modèle
automatique 15XX dans quelques mois.
