tubes.
Additionally the company is displaying a
complete Skylark high-altitude research rocket
for the Ministry of Aviation.
The 5in-diameter meteorological rocket has
been designed to determine conditions, including winds, from altitudes of 38 miles downwards by means of the release of a 15ftdiameter parachute and sonde at a height of
38 miles.

A record number of 18 power units are
exhibited o n the Bristol Siddeley stand. These
are: V/STOL powerplant: Pegasus lift/thrust
turbofan; Turbojets: Olympus, Orpheus 802,
Viper 20, Viper 11; Turboshaft engines: Gnome
1200, Coupled Gnome, N i m b u s ; Ramjets:

PR 37, rocket chambers.
The Pegasus has been flying for more than
two years in the Hawker P. 1127 VTOL strike
aircraft. A number of these machines are on
order for the British, American and German
governments for joint tactical trials, and the
British Government has announced its decision
to order the Hawker P. 1154 Mach 2 VTOL
fighter, powered by the similar but more
powerful BS 100 engine, for both the R A F and
the Royal Navy. Pegasus and BS 100 engines
have been selected for many projects, ranging
from fighters to four-engined transports.
A supersonic version of the Olympus turbojet has been chosen to power the BAC TSR.2,
the new tactical strike/reconnaissance aircraft
on order for the R A F , and a civil derivative—
(he Olympus 593—is being developed in collaboration with S N E C M A for the Anglo-French
supersonic airliner Concord.
Orpheus engines have already flown in ten
different aircraft types excluding flying test
beds. Most powerful production version is the
Orpheus 803 of 5,0001b thrust.
The Viper 20 is a development of the Viper
11. It powers the de Havilland \2i and has
also been specified for the Piaggio-Douglas 808
Vespa-Jet executive aircraft. The principal
change is the addition of a zero stage to the
compressor.
Gnome turboshaft engines are in quantity
production for several aircraft.

2 de cette avion, nommee P.1154, va etre
equipee du reacteur BS 100 derive" du Pegasus.
Le BS 100 a eti choisi pour d'autres projets
d'avions VTOL. Une version supersonique du
reacteur Olympus va equiper Vavion d'assault
TSR.2, et un derive civil nomme Olympus 593,
developpe en cooperation avec la SNECMA,
a
ete choisi pour le transport supersonique Concorde.

Highlight of the BAC contribution is the
first overseas appearance of the VC10. One of
five engaged on the flight test programme, it
will fly to Paris on June 13 for the weekend
displays, wearing the livery of BOAC, which
has 42 on order. Also taking part will be an
English Electric Lightning T.5, the latest
trainer version. This has the same equipment
as the single-seat Mk 3 and carries the same
armament, including Red T o p missiles.
A dominating feature of the main stand is a
scale model, 17ft in length, of the Concord
supersonic transport. A similar model is o n
the stand of Sud-Aviation, with whom BAC is
sharing design, development and production
of this 100-passenger, 1,450 m.p.h. airliner.
Models of other airliners—the BAC OneEleven, VC10 and Super VC10—are on view,
