À la suite d’une 3e édition divertissante et couronnée de succès, le Festival du Film Grec de Montréal est fier
d’annoncer sa 4e édition, qui aura lieu du 25 octobre au 3 novembre 2012, ainsi qu’une importante amélioration :
une prolongation de la durée du festival de sept à dix jours, avec une sélection de films de fiction et de
documentaires projetés au Cinéma du Parc et au Théâtre Rialto. Sur la belle affiche de ce 4 e festival, nos couleurs ont
été modifiées pour laisser place à des teintes éclatantes de rouge et de jaune. Cette année, c’est la célèbre Victoire
de Samothrace qui en est le symbole.
Le FFGM de cette année accueillera la communauté italienne en proposant un programme qui explorera et
découvrira les affinités culturelles et les similarités sociales entre la Grèce et l’Italie. Lors de la soirée d’ouverture au
Théâtre Rialto, le FFGM présentera au public Encardia the Dancing Stone, un documentaire musical nous initiant
ainsi à la convivialité des sons du sud de l’Italie. Le journaliste primé Aphrodite Salas et Mose Persico, qui a animé et
réalisé plusieurs spectacles importants, seront les hôtes de la soirée d’ouverture du Festival du Film Grec de
Montréal le 25 octobre au Théâtre Rialto. Elle sera suivie d’un cocktail ainsi que d’un spectacle de Nitza Melas,
chanteur-compositeur du Cirque du Soleil.
Afin de rendre hommage au défunt Michael Cacoyannis, un réalisateur qui a créé plusieurs portraits de femmes
inspirants, le FFGM projettera Elektra, la tragédie d’une héroïne grecque interprétée par Irene Papas, ainsi que
Stella, l’histoire d’une femme indépendante à tout prix interprétée par Melina Mercouri. Ces deux actrices sont
rayonnantes et ce sont ces deux films qui les ont introduites dans le monde du cinéma international. Nous aurons de
plus l’occasion rare de redécouvrir la fameuse cantatrice d’opéra Maria Callas grâce à son unique passage au
cinéma, interprétant l’emblématique Médée dans le film de Pier Paolo Pasolini. En somme, trois grandes artistes
grecques mettant en scène trois héroïnes classiques.
Comme chaque année, le FFGM offre une soirée à une association locale représentant une partie de la Grèce. Cette
année, l’hommage est consacré aux associations Constantinople et Pontian de Montréal et nous présenterons le
poignant documentaire Twice a Stranger rappelant l’échange forcé de populations entre la Grèce et la Turquie et A
Touch of Spice par Tassos Boulmetis, un film très populaire et émouvant qui raconte l’expulsion des Grecs de
Constantinople durant les années 60. Entre ces deux films, vous aurez la chance de goûter à une «pincée d’épices»
grâce à un cocktail plein de saveurs grecques et orientales.
Le Panorama du Cinéma Grec Contemporain est une partie très évocatrice du FFGM qui permettra au public de
découvrir les meilleurs films grecs ayant été nommés ou primés lors de plusieurs festivals prestigieux partout dans le
monde, mettant en lumière ainsi leur reconnaissance internationale. Cette année, nous présenterons entre autres :
Cineastes et J.A.C.E. par Menelaos Karamaggiolis (Berlinale 2012 et le Festival international du film de Tokyo),
Christmas Tango par Nikos Koutelidakis (Meilleure trame sonore, Meilleure direction artistique et Meilleurs
costumes au Hellenic Film Academy Awards), DOS par Stathis Athanasiou (Prix du meilleur film et prix du public du
Festival du film indépendant de New York, 2012 ), Wandering Soul par Angeliki Aristomenopoulou (Prix Fipresci pour
le Meilleur documentaire, Festival du documentaire à Thessalonique ,2010)
Il y aura une présentation spéciale le 28 octobre du film de Pantelis Voulgaris, Venizelos, en l’honneur de la Journée
nationale de l’indépendance grecque. Le 3 novembre, la soirée de clôture du 4e FFGM aura aussi lieu au Rialto, avec
une projection du film italien Mediterraneo de Gabrielle Salvatores.

GOLDEN GLOBE DU MEILLEUR FILM ÉTRANGER EN 1955
Mélina Mercouri (1920-1994) était une actrice et une chanteuse grecque qui a fait ses débuts au cinéma dans Stella
et obtient un succès mondial avec ses interprétations dans Jamais le dimanche, Phèdre, Topkapi et La Promesse de
l’aube. Elle obtient le prix d’interprétation féminine à Cannes en 1960 et fut également finaliste pour un Oscar, trois
Golden Globes et deux prix BAFTA. Politiquement engagée pendant la période de la Junte militaire grecque de 1967
à 1974, elle est élue au Parlement hellénique en 1977 et déviant, en 1981, la première femme Ministre de la Culture
en Grèce. En 1983, ce fut elle qui imagine et conçoit le programme des capitales européennes de la culture qui
perdure depuis 1985 dans l’Union européenne.
Michael Cacoyannis (1922 –2011) était un cinéaste chypriote-grec mondialement connu pour son film Zorba the
Greek (1964). Il a aussi réalisé la comédie musicale présentée sur Broadway en 1883 et basée sur son film. Une
grande partie de son travail a été enracinée dans les textes classiques, en particulier ceux du tragédien grec Euripide.
Il a été en nomination pour un Oscar à cinq reprises, un record pour un artiste de cinéma chypriote-grec. Il était en
compétition pour les prix du meilleur réalisateur, du meilleur scénario adapté, et du meilleur film pour Zorba the
Greek, et a reçu deux nominations dans la catégorie du meilleur film étranger pour Electre et Iphigénie.

---------------------Le fils béni est un documentaire autobiographique réalisé par le fils d’immigrants grecs vivant au Canada. Après avoir
surmonté un sévère problème de drogue, motivé par sa quête du bonheur avec sa nouvelle fiancée, le cinéaste Tony
Asimakopoulos tourne son regard sur la relation complexe, douloureuse et dysfonctionnelle qu’il entretient avec sa
mère autoritaire et son père souffrant. C’est un film qui traite de la foi, du désespoir, du renouvellement et des
différents aspects de l’amour au sein d’une famille. Le fils béni suit le destin du réalisateur de la maison de son
enfance à Montréal jusqu’au village natal de ses parents en Grèce. Et plus loin encore.
Tony Asimakopoulos est un cinéaste et monteur pigiste basé à Montréal où il a obtenu, en 1993, un diplôme en
production cinématographique de l’université de Concordia. Ses courts métrages intitulés Jimmy Fingers et Mam’s
Boy lui ont valu une grande renommée sur le circuit des festivals internationaux. Fortunate Son est son premier long
métrage de fiction.

L’explication la plus simple est en général la bonne. Les détectives Whale et Karloff sont sur un cas intéressant. Deux
criminels apparemment sans aucun lien, confessant le même meurtre. Au fur et à mesure que l‘intrigue se dénoue,
s’ensuit un intense jeu du chat et de la souris conduisant à une vérité que les détectives ne sont peut-être pas en
mesure de supporter.

Menelaos Karamaghiolis est né à Thèbes en Grèce et étudie la littérature grecque byzantine et moderne à
l’université d’Athènes. Réalisateur, scénariste tout autant que producteur reconnu à la radio et à la télévision, il a
obtenu de nombreux prix en Grèce et à l’étranger pour ces documentaires et son film Black Out. Son plus récent
film, J.A.C.E., a valu à Stefania Goulioti le prix de la meilleure actrice du 52e Festival international du film de
Thessalonique.

---------------------Wandering Soul est un documentaire sur un célèbre rock-star grec, Yannis Aggelakas, dont les paroles ont marqué
la scène rock alternative grecque. Yannis Angelakas s'est mis en route pour un voyage musical dans les années 80 et
sa poésie reste fraîche encore aujourd’hui. Le film suit sa vie quotidienne et s’attache à dépeindre plusieurs
problèmes à travers les yeux de l'artiste: l'impasse politique dans laquelle la Grèce se trouve; la manière dont la
télévision façonne notre réalité; le besoin que ressentent beaucoup de gens de quitter la grande ville et de retourner
dans leurs villages pour retrouver leurs racines. Durant les deux ans de tournage, nous observons Angelakas alors
qu'il joue avec ses collègues musiciens et nous suivons l'évolution de leur style musical à travers une exploration des
sons de leur enfance: le rembétiko, la musique polyphonique de l'Épire, et les mélodies crétoises.
Angeliki Aristomenopoulou est née à Athènes. Elle a étudié le cinéma à Londres et à Barcelone, se spécialisant dans
la réalisation de documentaires. Elle est retournée à Athènes en 2001, où elle a travaillé comme assistanteréalisatrice et photographe de plateau dans plusieurs productions grecques. Depuis 2006, elle réalise et supervise la
série documentaire « World Music », une des séries les plus populaires en son genre. Elle a complété plus de 30
épisodes portant sur des thèmes et des genres de partout dans le monde, dont certains ont participé avec succès à
des festivals de films internationaux.

Stathis Athanasiou, après avoir achevé ses études en médecine, a continué pour apprendre l’animation et la
réalisation de films. Il a étudié à la New York Film Academy de Londres et a été invité au Berlinale Talent Campus en
2005. Il a obtenu de nombreux prix pour ses courts métrages dans beaucoup de festivals internationaux (Mar del
Plata, Saint Petersbourg, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Athènes, Patras, Los Angeles) et pour ses publicités à la télévision
en Grèce. Il est réalisateur pigiste à Athènes et travaille depuis 2000 au théâtre, au cinéma, en publicité et à la
télévision.

---------------------À l'occasion de la fête nationale grecque, nous sommes fiers de vous présenter une projection unique du film-fleuve
de Voulgaris, un classique d'une durée de 3 heures consacré à la vie du grand homme politique grec Eleftherios
Venizelos (1864-1936). Le film se concentre sur sa personnalité aux nombreuses facettes durant la période la plus
cruciale de l'histoire de la Grèce moderne, sur laquelle il a imprimé une marque indélébile. Venizelos eut une
influence tellement profonde sur les affaires internes et étrangères de la Grèce qu'il est reconnu comme « le père de
la Grèce moderne ».
Pantelis Voulgaris est né à Athènes en 1940 et a étudié à l'école de cinéma Stavrakou. Ses films ont acquis une
renommée internationale et ont obtenu de nombreux prix, établissant ainsi sa réputation comme l'un des plus
grands cinéastes grecs de sa génération. Pantelis Voulgaris a également réalisé plusieurs documentaires pour la
télévision grecque, dont le documentaire sur le poète Yannis Ritsos. En 1995, le Museum of Modern Art de New York
rend hommage à Pantelis Voulgaris en organisant une rétrospective de mi-carrière.

-----------------------------------Dans la figure de Médée, la magicienne séduite et abandonnée par Jason l’aventurier, Pasolini a vu une allégorie,
représentant à la fois la défaite de l'irrationnel vis-à-vis du rationnel et la colonisation de l'Ancien Monde. Pasolini
évoque avec brio le domaine primitif de la magie et du sacrifice que Médée délaisse naïvement afin de suivre Jason,
avant de se rendre compte qu'elle est devenue un tremplin pour ses ambitions dans le monde politique froid et
rationnel des jeux de pouvoir.
Maria Callas (1923–1977), soprano grecque née en Amérique était reconnue comme une des plus grandes
cantatrices d’opéra du 20e siècle. Elle a su combiner une impressionnante technique de bel canto, une voix aux
registres multiples et aux interprétations dramatiques. Une chanteuse extrêmement polyvalente, son répertoire
variait du classique à l'opéra seria et aux opéras bel canto de Donizetti, Bellini et Rossini, il se déployait aussi des
œuvres de Verdi et de Puccini aux drames musicaux de Wagner. Ses talents remarquables de cantatrice et d’actrice
lui ont valu le surnom de La Divina. Son rôle dans Médée fut le seul pour lequel elle ne chanta pas.
Pier Paolo Pasolini était un metteur en scène, un scénariste, un essayiste, un poète, un critique et un romancier
italien brutalement assassiné en 1975. Pasolini est surtout connu pour ses films basés sur des œuvres littéraires tels
L'Évangile selon saint Matthieu, Le Décameron, et Les Contes de Canterbury. Son ami, l'écrivain Alberto Moravia, le
considérait comme « le grand poète italien » de la seconde moitié du 20e siècle.

Irène Papas (1926) a débuté sa carrière en Grèce (elle fut découverte par Elia Kazan) avant d'apparaître dans des
films reconnus à l'échelle internationale, comme Les Canons de Navarone et Zorba le grec, et des films bien accueillis
par la critique comme Z et Le Christ s’est arrêté à Eboli. Avec plus de 70 films et une carrière qui a duré 50 ans, Irène
Papas a interprété plusieurs personnages importants, comme Hélène dans Les Troyennes, Clytemnestre dans
Iphigénie, ainsi que les personnages éponymes dans Electre et Antigone. Elle a partagé la vedette dans Les
Troyennes avec Katharine Hepburn, qui a dit que Papas était « l'une des meilleures actrices de l'histoire du cinéma».

---------------------Deux fois orphelin, Jace, un albanais de sept ans d’origine grecque, est témoin du massacre qui élimine
complétement sa famille d’accueil a Argyrokastron puis il tombe entre les mains d’un groupe de bandits
impitoyables qui « exporte » des enfants à l’étranger pour en tirer différents profits (à partir de vols ou de trafic
d’organes). Jace se retrouve à Athènes et mendie au coin des rues, expérimentant les horreurs cachées des
institutions pour jeunes contrevenants ou encore, beaucoup plus tard, devenir le larbin de patrons véreux dans un
monde interlope où son destin semble être lié à une violence impitoyable. Le film suit cette Odyssée de Jace au sein
d’un univers glauque dans lequel règnent les abus, le meurtre et la peur tandis qu’il cherche désespérément (en
silence) une « famille » pour lui-même et, enfin, un sentiment d’appartenance.

---------------------À l’aube du 20e siècle, les Balkans faisaient encore partie de l’Empire Ottoman multi ethnique qui permettait aux
chrétiens, musulmans et juifs de coexister. Mais en 1924, leur monde s’écroule. Presque 400 000 musulmans sont
expulsés de Grèce vers la Turquie et au moins 1,2 million de grecs orthodoxes déménagent de Turquie en Grèce. Le
film examine les raisons de ces exodes en donnant la parole aux réfugiés qui ont survécu de chaque côté de la
frontière gréco-turque.
Andreas Apostolidis est un romancier et un cinéaste célèbre en Grèce. Il a réalisé plus de 80 épisodes de la série
documentaire à succès Reportage Without Frontiers, diffusée chaque semaine sur le réseau national grec. En 2006 il
signe The Network, un film sur le trafic illegal d’antiquités et le livre Looting and Trade of Antiquities. Il a achevé
récemment A Place Without People, Twice a Stranger et Figuring it Out.
Yuri Averof a étudié l’anthropologie et la sociologie. Il a fait la recherche, la production et la réalisation de plus de
trente documentaires pour la série primée Reportage Without Frontiers diffusée sur ERT. Il a également réalisé
Banquet of the Dead (Prix du meilleur documentaire du Centre du film grec en 2001) et Earthquake. Récemment il a
complété de nombreux projets parmi lesquels A Place Without People, Twice a Stranger et Figuring it Out.

Tassos Boulmetis est né à Istanbul en 1957 et arrive en Grèce en 1964. Il étudie la physique à l’Université d’Athènes
et la production et la réalisation cinématographiques à l’université de Californie (UCLA) grâce à une bourse de la
Foundation Onassis. A Touch of spice est devenu le plus grand succès du cinéma grec avec plus de 1 500 000
d’entrées et il a été distribué dans plus de 36 pays dans le monde. Le film a récolté six prix en Grèce et a représenté
le pays dans la course aux Oscars en 2005.

---------------------Une fascinante enquête historique et scientifique qui raconte l'extraordinaire histoire de la construction par les
Grecs d'un ancien ordinateur analogique conçu pour calculer les positions astronomiques il y a 2000 ans.
Découvert par hasard en 1901 par des pêcheurs près d'une épave antique, son importance et sa complexité n'ont
été comprises qu'un siècle plus tard. Jacques-Yves Cousteau a visité l'épave en 1978, et bien qu'il ait trouvé de
nouvelles preuves de son ancienneté, il n'a pas trouvé de vestiges supplémentaires de la machine d'Anticythère. La
construction a été datée du début du 1er siècle avant JC. Aucun objet technologique se rapprochant de la
complexité de sa fabrication n'est apparu jusqu'au 14e siècle après JC, lorsque les horloges astronomiques
mécaniques ont commencé à être construites en Europe de l'Ouest.
Mike Beckham a produit 180 documentaires pour des sociétés de diffusion au Royaume-Uni, aux États-Unis et en
Europe. Entre autres, il a produit des programmes hebdomadaires d'affaires courantes ainsi que des
documentaires historiques et anthropologiques, incluant une dramatisation des évènements qui se sont déroulés

After a very successful and entertaining 3rd edition, the Montreal Greek Film Festival is proud to announce its 4th
edition from October 25th to November 3rd 2012 with an important improvement: extending its duration from
seven to ten days, screening a variety of feature fiction films and documentaries in Cinema du Parc and Rialto
Theatre. Our MGFF 2012 poster is in striking red and yellow tints and the festival’s symbol is the famous statue of
the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
This year’s MGFF will embrace the Italian Community proposing a program that explores and discovers the cultural
affinities and social similarities between Greece and Italy.
In the Opening Night, taking place at Rialto Theatre, the MGFF will present to the Montreal audience the musical
documentary Encardia the Dancing Stone introducing us to the warmth of the sounds from South Italy. Awardwinning journalist Aphrodite Salas and Mose Persico who has hosted and produced several award-winning shows
will present the Opening Night. Dinning Cocktail and live music performance by Cirque du Soleil’s singer and
composer Nitza Melas will follow.
As a Tribute to the late Michael Cacoyannis, a director who created inspiring women’s portraits, the MGFF will bring
to the screen Electra, the Greek tragedy heroine, interpreted by Irene Papas and Stella, an independent at all costs
woman, interpreted by Melina Mercouri, two amazingly radiant actresses who were pointed out to the international
world of cinema through these great of all-time films. We will also have the rare opportunity to rediscover the
famous opera singer, the divine Maria Callas in her unique appearance, as an actress, interpreting the emblematic
heroine Medea in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s homonymous film. Three great Greek Artists, giving life to three Classic
Heroines.
As every year, the MGFF will dedicate again one night at a local association representing a part of Greece. This year’s
tribute will be offered to the Constantinople and Pontian Associations of Montreal and we will be presenting the
poignant documentary Twice a Stranger and Touch of Spice a very popular and emotive film about the forced
expulsion of Greeks from Constantinople in the 60’s. In between the films you will have the opportunity to taste a
little “touch of spice”, a cocktail full of Greek- oriental flavors.
A new addition also in this year’s program is the Young Film Directors from the Greek Diaspora with an interesting
selection of films, featuring local filmmakers.
A very evocative part of the MGFF is the Contemporary Greek Cinema Panorama giving the opportunity to the
Montreal audience to discover the best of Greek films that have been nominated and awarded in prestigious
Festivals all over the world, enjoying an international recognition. Included in this year’s program are: the films
Cineastes and J.A.C.E. by Menelaos Karamaggiolis (Berlinale 2012 and Tokyo International Festival), Christmas
Tango by Nikos Koutelidakis (Hellenic Film Academy Awards for Best Original Music, Best Art Direction and Best
Costumes), DOS (Award for Best feature film and Audience Award, New York Independent Film Festival, 2012),
Wandering Soul by Angeliki Aristomenopoulou. The program also includes the screening of the Antikythera
Mechanism, a documentary about a fascinating journey of the discovery of the first mechanical computer.
The Closing Night, as a celebrating conclusion of the 4th MGFF, will also take place at the Rialto, on November 3rd
screening Mediterraneo, by Gabrielle Salvatores, an Italian feature film shot in the beautiful Greek island landscape,
illustrating a captivating love story between an Italian soldier and a young Greek prostitute converted to a faithful
deep loving wife. Live music and cocktail will follow.

Melina Mercouri (1920-1994) was a Greek actress, singer and made her film debut in Stella (1955) and met
international success with her performances in Never on Sunday, Phaedra, Topkapi and Promise at Dawn. She won
the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival, and she was also nominated for an Academy Award,
three Golden Globe Awards, and two BAFTA Awards. A political activist during the Greek military junta of 1967–
1974, she became a member of the Hellenic Parliament in 1977 and the first female Minister for Culture of Greece in
1981. Mercouri was the person who, in 1983, conceived and proposed the programme of the European Capital of
Culture, which has been established by the European Union since 1985.
GOLDEN GLOBE FOR BEST FOREIGN FILM IN 1955
Michael Cacoyannis (1922 –2011) was a world famous Greek Cypriot filmmaker, best known for his 1964 film Zorba
the Greek. He directed the 1983 Broadway revival of the musical based on the film. Much of his work was rooted in
classical texts, especially those of the Greek tragedian Euripides. He was nominated for an Academy Award five
times, a record for any Greek Cypriot film artist. He received Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film
nominations for Zorba the Greek, and two nominations in the Foreign Language Film category for Elektra and
Iphigenia.

overcoming a severe drug problem, and motivated by a search for happiness with his new fiancée, filmmaker Tony
Asimakopoulos turns his gaze on his complicated, painful relationship with his overbearing mother and ailing father,
and the patterns of dysfunction they share. A film about faith, despair, renewal, and the different kinds of love in a
family, Fortunate Son follows the filmmaker from his childhood home in Montreal, to the Greek villages of his
parents’ birth, and beyond.
Tony Asimakopoulos is a filmmaker and freelance editor currently based in Montreal, where he earned a degree in
film production in 1993 from Concordia University. His short films, namely Jimmy Fingers and Mama's Boy, have
earned him considerable attention from film festivals across the world. Fortunate Son is his first feature length

Rissient became a driving force for filmmakers in international independent cinema, and how film directors can

Menelaos Karamaghiolis was born in Thebes, Greece. He studied Byzantine and Modern Greek Literature at the
University of Athens. A film director and writer, as well as an established producer for radio and TV, he has been
awarded various prizes for his documentaries and feature film Black Out, both in Greece and abroad. His latest
feature film J.A.C.E. won the Best Actress Award (Stefania Goulioti) at the 52nd Thessaloniki IFF.

----------------------------------Wandering Soul is a documentary about a musician whose lyrics have left their mark on the Greek alternative rock
scene. Yannis Angelakas set off on his musical journey in the 80’s and his poetry remains fresh to this day. The film
follows his daily life and touches on a number of issues through the artist’s eyes – the political impasse Greece is
facing, the way that television shapes our reality, the need many people feel to leave the big city and return to their
beloved villages and hometowns. During the two years of filming, we watch Angelakas as he plays with fellow
musicians and we follow the evolution of their musical style through an exploration of the sounds of their childhood,
rembetiko, the polyphonic music of Epirus and the Cretan melodies.

Angeliki Aristomenopoulou was born in Athens. She studied directing in London and Barcelona specializing in

series “World Music”, one of the most popular series of its kind. She has completed over 30 episodes including

his indelible mark. Venizelos had such profound influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece that he is
credited with being "the Father of Modern Greece”.
Pantelis Voulgaris was born in Athens in 1940 and studied at the Stavrakou Film School. His films have won
international acclaim and numerous awards establishing his reputation as one of the foremost Greek film directors
of his generation. Pantelis Voulgaris has directed several documentaries for Greek television among them the
documentary on the poet Yannis Ritsos. In 1995 Pantelis Voulgaris was honored by the Museum of Modern Art in
New York with a mid-career retrospective.

Maria Callas (1923–1977) was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned opera singers of the

extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti,
Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of
Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina. Her role in MEDEA was
her only non-singing role.
Pier Paolo Pasolini was an Italian director, screen writer, essayist, poet, critic and novelist who was murdered
violently in 1975. Pasolini is best known for his films which were based on literary sources - The Gospel According to
Saint Matthew, The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales. His friend, the writer Alberto Moravia, considered him "the
major Italian poet" of the second half of the 20th century.

Irene Papas (1926) began her early career in Greece (she was discovered by Elia Kazan) before starring in
internationally renowned films such as The Guns of Navarone and Zorba the Greek, and critically acclaimed films
such as Z and Christ Stopped at Eboli. With over 70 films in a 50 year career, Irene Papas has been a leading figure in
transcriptions of ancient tragedy such as Helen in The Trojan Women, Clytemnestra in Iphigenia, and the eponymous
parts in Electra and Antigone. She co-starred in The Trojan Women with Katharine Hepburn, who once said that
Papas was "one of the best actresses in the history of cinema".

Michael Cacoyannis (1922 –2011) was a world famous Greek Cypriot filmmaker, best known for his 1964 film Zorba
the Greek. He directed the 1983 Broadway revival of the musical based on the film. Much of his work was rooted in
classical texts, especially those of the Greek tragedian Euripides. He was nominated for an Academy Award five
times, a record for any Greek Cypriot film artist. He received Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film
nominations for Zorba the Greek, and two nominations in the Foreign Language Film category for Elektra and
Iphigenia.

------------------------Twice-orphaned Jace, a seven-year-old Albanian of Greek origin, witnesses a massacre that wipes out his entire
foster family in Argyrokastron, and then falls in the hands of a bunch of ruthless gangsters who "export" children
abroad for various profitable reasons (ranging from beggary to organ trade). Jace ends up in Athens, Greece, begging
at street corners, exploring the secret horrors of brutal institutions for young offenders or, much later, serving
obscure patrons, in an underworld where violent loss seems to be his only destiny. The movie follows Jace's Odyssey
into a dark universe of abuse, murder and fear, as he desperately (and silently) seeks (and finds) a "family" of his
own and, at least, a sense of belonging.

Menelaos Karamaghiolis is a graduate of the Anaνryton Model Classical High School, he pursued Byzantine and
Modern Greek studies at the Athens University School of Philosophy. He has worked as assistant director and
scriptwriter in films and the theatre. He has also written and produced a series of radio programmes for Greek public
radio's Third Programme. His articles and short stories have been published in collections, magazines and
newspapers.

------------------------At the dawn of the 20th century, the Balkans were still part of a multi ethnic Ottoman Empire which allowed
Christians, Muslims and Jews to co-exist. But, by 1924, their world had fallen apart. Almost 400.000 Muslims were
expelled from Greece into Turkey, and at least 1.2 million Orthodox Greeks moved from Turkey to Greece. The film
examines how this came to be, giving voice to surviving refugees on both sides of the Greek and Turkish border.
Andreas Apostolidis is a well known novelist and director in Greece. He has directed over 80 episodes of the award
winning series "Reportage Without Frontiers", a current affairs documentary strand broadcast weekly by the Greek
National Network. In 2006 he completed "The Network", a film about the illicit trade of antiquities and the book
"Looting and Trade of Antiquities". Recently completed projects include "A Place Without People", "Twice a
Stranger", and "Figuring it Out".
Yuri Averof has studied Anthropology and Sociology and has researched, produced or directed more than thirty
documentaries for the award winning series "Reportage Without Frontiers", broadcasted by ERT. He has also
directed "Banquet of the Dead" (Greek Film Centre Award for Best Documentary 2001) and "Earthquake". Recent
work as a producer includes "The Secret of Snake Goddess", "Sugartown: The Day After" and "A Place Without
People" , "The Call of the Mountain" , "The Game Must Go On" and the doc series "1821" (SKAI), the documentary
"Sayome" and the exhibition "Twice a Stranger".

lives of those around him. 35 years later he leaves Athens and travels back to his birthplace of Istanbul to reunite
with his grandfather and his first love; he travels back only to realize that he forgot to put a little bit of spice in his
own life.

Tassos Boulmetis was born in Istanbul in 1957 and came to Greece in 1964. He studied Physics in the University of
Athens and Film Production and Direction in the University of California (UCLA), with scholarship from the Onassis
Foundation. "A Touch of Spice", became the biggest cinema hit ever in Greece with over 1.500.00 admissions and
has been distributed in 36 countries in all over the world. A Touch of Spice has been awarded with 6 Awards in
Greece. The film was Greece's official entry in the Academy Awards of 2005.

------------------------Fascinating historical and scientific investigation telling the extraordinary story of how the ancient Greeks built an
ancient analog computer designed to calculate astronomical positions 2000 years ago. Discovered accidentally
from an ancient wreck by fishermen in 1901 its significance and complexity were not understood until a century
later. Jacques-Yves Cousteau visited the wreck in 1978, but although he found new dating evidence he did not find
any additional remains of the Antikythera mechanism. The construction has been dated to the early 1st century
BC. Technological artifacts approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again until the 14th
century A.D., when mechanical astronomical clocks began to be built in Western Europe.
