Labex SIGNALIFE Seminar series Mechanisms regulating stemness in skin Cancer Cédric BLANPAIN Interdisciplinary Research Institute (IRIBHM) Université Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, BE Friday April 18th, 2014, 11:30 am Théâtre du Grand Château, Campus Valrose UFR Sciences, 28 Avenue Valrose, 06100 Nice Cédric Blanpain, MD/PhD, is full professor and WELBIO investigator at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. His lab is studying the role of stem cells (SCs) during development, homeostasis and cancer. Since he started in own lab, he demonstrated the key role of Mesp1 during the specification of cardiovascular progenitors, identified the cellular origin of Merkel cells and the mechanisms by which hair follicle SCs resist to DNA damage induced cell death. Using lineage-tracing approaches, he uncovered new SC populations in the mammary epithelium and the prostate, as well as the cells at the origin of the two most frequent skin cancers. He also recently developed new methods to investigate cancer stem cells in skin tumors and identified a new role of VEFG in regulating skin cancer SCs.
