Angouleme Franciscan left Venice for Constantinople in 1549, from where (in company with Pierre Gilles) he went
on to explore Asia Minor. He extended his journey into Syria, the Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt and then returned to
Marseilles via Malta and Sardinia in 1554. This work is also noteworthy for the unusual illustrations by Bernard
Salomon, known as “le petit Bernard,” whom Updike considers “one of the most distinguished designers of the
French-Italian school” (Printing Types I, 203). Salomon was associated with the Lyons printer de Tournes the elder as
early as 1546 in the production of Focard’s Paraphrase de l’Astrolabe. The woodcuts in the present volume depict the
inhabitants, natural history, and monuments of the countries visited. The woodcut arms of Francois de La
Rochefoucauld, the dedicatee, appear on the title-page verso, and there is a portrait of Thevet near the end. The
initials are exquisitely designed in several styles, including fine large scribble blocks for the dedication and preface,
and there are head-and tail pieces. A fine copy of great provenance of this utmost rare illustrated work.

Padoue, Francesco Bertelli, 1629. 1 vol. in-4° oblong. 1 engr. frontispiece, 68 + 10 plates. Early half sheep. Scarce
copy of the first atlas devoted to Italian cities. This book is the main work of Francesco BERTELLI (1594-1629),
member of a famous family of engravers. He worked as an editor, typographer and engraver at the beginning of the
17th century, in Padova. The first maps and views of European cities, connecting with some military events, (cf.
Tooley) appeared around 1550. BERTELLI’s work, published in 1629, is the first work of that kind in his country: a
collection of maps put together as an atlas, concerning Italian cities. Most of the plates includes the blazons of the
cities, and also many interesting details as: vegetation, buildings, fortifications, coasts, and even some peoples and
animals. Bound at the end: a charming manuscript poem, celebrating 100 Italian cities. Unfortunately, the quality of
the illustrations caused the break of a lot of copies, making the complete book very rare. Fine copy of this scarce and
exceptional book.
