TITLE
Impurity transport in the presence of a magnetic island
ABSTRACT
Present researches on fusion by magnetic confinement aim at producing electricity by confining with intense magnetic fields an ionised
medium (plasma) at temperatures one order of magnitude larger than that of stars, in a toroidal device called a tokamak. Instabilities can
develop in the form of magnetic islands that degrade the quality of energy confinement, and impact particle transport, in particular heavy
impurities. These are produced by the interaction of the hot plasma with plasma facing components, and it is mandatory that they stay
confined at the plasma periphery, because the radiative losses that they induce at plasma centre decrease the temperature and
jeopardize the realization of fusion reactions. However, the contamination by impurities is experimentally observed to be accelerated in
some cases in the presence of magnetic islands.
The aim of the PhD work is to understand, on the basis of a set of equations governing particle transport as well as with numerical tools,
how a magnetic island influences impurity transport, in order to clarify this crucial issue. How magnetic island control can mitigate this
transport will also be addressed. This work will be done in collaboration with the PIIM laboratory at Aix-Marseille University, and with the
Centre for Theoretical Physics (CNRS, Ecole Polytechnique) where the numerical tool is developed.
