( to the) used before vowel À

Preposition à means to
À + le =au ( to the) used with masculine singular
À + l’= À l’( to the) used before vowel
À + la= À la ( to the) used with feminine singular
À+ les=aux ( to the)used with masculine or feminine
plural.
Examples:
Je vais au cinéma.(cinéma is masculine sing.)
I go to the cinema.
Elle va à la gare.(gare is feminine sing.)
She goes to the station.
Tu vas à l’aéroport?(aéroport starts with vowel)
You go to the airport.
Ils vont aux États-unis?(united states is plural in
French)
They go to USA.
Note: we use articles definite articles (le,la,l’,les)
before the name of the countries and no articles are
used before the cities.

preposition “to the” in French takes form according
to the gender.
Articles that come before countries are au, en, aux.
and before cities we use à.
