TITLE
Study of the evolution of the geopolymer / Mg-Zr alloy interface
ABSTRACT
This PhD subject is dedicated to the understanding of the behavior of the intermediate level legacy nuclear waste in repository, and more
specifically, of the Mg-Zr alloy cladding coming from Natural Uranium Graphite Gas reactors, encapsulated into an inorganic geopolymer
envisaged as confinement matrix.
Geopolymers are aluminosilicate materials having a nanoporosity filled of water and ions, evolving over time (porosity, network…). The
presence of the poral solution dependent on the geopolymer composition, leads to the corrosion of the alloy. In order to predict the
evolution of the system Mg-Zr alloy / geopolymer the underlying processes need to be clarified.
To reach this goal, the innovative approach of this study consists in the characterization of the evolution of the interface between the MgZr alloy / and various geopolymers through the use of thin layer samples (geopolymer deposited on metal). To reach this goal, several
geopolymers will be deposited as thin layers and several surface characterizations will be used such as X-ray and neutron reflectivity,
grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, AFM, Raman and infrared spectroscopy…
