FRENCH PHD READING LIST
(December 2009)
The doctoral comprehensive examination is based on the student’s course work and the
following reading list, to which each student will add ten additional titles, related to the area in
which the student plans to write her/his dissertation and chosen to form the basis for a ten-minute
exposé given at the beginning of the exam.
In the approximately three-hour oral examination, each segment will last 20 minutes. The first
part of the exam will begin with the exposé and its discussion and continue with the segments on
the Middle Ages, 16th, and 17th centuries. There will be a 20 minute break, after which the
examination will resume with the final four segments devoted to the 18th, 19th, 20th centuries and
Francophone literature.
Students are encouraged to consult with the specialists in each field when beginning to prepare
the reading list (NB where selections need to be made).
Given the concision of the list, students are expected to know each work well enough to sustain
an in-depth discussion of it during the exam. Knowledge of each text should be complemented
by background information in literary history, frames of reference such as genres, themes, poetic
forms, etc. The texts should be studied in relation to their social, political, and cultural contexts,
and within the framework of literary theory. The critical readings added to the lists of primary
works are recommended, not required; they furnish a starting point for further secondary reading
where needed.
