RESEARCH FIELD / Domaine de recherche : Hydraulics and hydrology (urban water systems).
USUAL LANGUAGE IN LAB / Langue de travail dans le laboratoire : English.
SUBJECT TITLE / Intitulé du sujet : Rainfall analysis and forecasting for application in urban
pluvial flood modelling and forecasting.
DESCRIPTION (5 to 15 lines) / Description (5 à 15 lignes) : Accurate and detailed (small
temporal and spatial resolution) rainfall forecast constitutes the main input for urban pluvial flood
forecasting (i.e. flooding due to intense rain events taking place is urban areas). Although it might
sound simple, getting an accurate and fine-scale rainfall forecast is not an easy task due to the
complexity of the hydrological phenomena and due to the difficulty of getting reliable and detailed
rainfall data that enables developing, calibrating and testing rainfall forecasting models. In order to
improve the modelling of precipitation (rainfall) fields and to finally improve the rainfall forecast, it
is necessary to carry out a detailed analysis of the available rainfall data from different sources (i.e.
raingauges and radars), taking into account the spatial and temporal resolution of the data, the
relationship between the data obtained from the different sources, amongst other aspects. The
research activities planned for the exchange student from the ENPC would be focused on
mathematically and statistically analysing available rainfall data from different sources, on testing
different interpolation techniques that could provide a continuous spatial distribution of the rainfall
data obtained from rain gauges (which provide punctual information) and on testing a recently
developed software package which enables improving the real time quantitative estimates of the
precipitation fields by combining rain gauge, radar and satellite information using an innovative
Bayesian multivariate formulation (Todini, 2005). This work mainly requires a strong mathematical
background. The student would be provided with literature about hydrological processes and PhD
students from Imperial College would work together with him/her, thus providing the required
support for the student to carry out the planned research activities.
