ABOUT THE OAG
À PROPOS DE LA GAO
The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) was founded in the late 1980s in response
to years of lobbying and organizing by Ottawa artists, who felt a municipal
gallery was needed to better represent the local artistic scene. This
realization was finally achieved in September 1988, with the opening of the
Gallery at Arts Court.
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa (GAO) a été fondée à la fin des années 1980 après
plusieurs années de lobbying et de mobilisation de la part des artistes
d’Ottawa, convaincus qu’une galerie municipale était nécessaire pour
mieux représenter la scène artistique locale. Leur objectif a finalement été
atteint en septembre 1988, avec l’ouverture de la Galerie à la Cour des arts.
In 1992, the City of Ottawa was given the Firestone Art Collection (now called
the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art). Custodianship of this collection
was transferred to the recently renamed Ottawa Art Gallery, which received
designation as Ottawa’s municipal art gallery as part of the agreement. The
incorporation of the OAG as an independent charitable organization took
place in 1993, with the election of its first board of directors.
En 1992, la Ville d’Ottawa s’est vue offrir la Collection d’art Firestone
(aujourd’hui la Collection Firestone d’art canadien). La garde de la collection
a été confiée à la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa, ainsi rebaptisée selon l’entente qui
la désignait comme étant la galerie municipale d’Ottawa. La Galerie a été
incorporée comme organisme de bienfaisance indépendant en 1993, lors

Since the mid-1990s, the OAG has produced innumerable, compelling
exhibitions, public programs and publications. During this period, the
gallery’s organizational, financial and governance structures have matured
significantly. Currently, plans are taking place to construct a new, purposebuilt gallery, which will be open in 2017.
Depuis le milieu des années 1990, la GAO a produit d’innombrables
expositions de grand intérêt, ainsi que publications et programmes
publics. Au cours des années, la structure organisationnelle, financière et
de gouvernance de la Galerie s’est développée de manière significative. La
Galerie se consacre actuellement au projet de construction d’un nouveau
bâtiment conçu sur mesure, et qui ouvrira ses portes en 2017.

MOT DU PRÉSIDENT ET DE LA DIRECTRICE
The right people at the right time and with the right plan can create major
change for an organization, and the Ottawa Art Gallery is no exception.
Guided by a five-year strategic plan (2010–2014), the OAG charted significant
growth in operations, development, communications and programming
— all leading toward the OAG Expansion and Arts Court Redevelopment
Project. The accomplishments that have transpired during the final year of this
strategic plan not only showcase the important evolution that has transpired
for the OAG, but also provide an opportune time to highlight our impressive
statistics and share a number of compelling stories.
On peut créer des changements majeurs au sein d’un organisme si l’on dispose
des bonnes personnes au bon moment ainsi que d’un bon plan d’action. À
cet égard, la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa ne fait pas exception. Dans le cadre de son
plan stratégique quinquennal (2010-2014), la GAO a fait croître de manière
significative ses capacités d’opérations, de développement, de communications
et de programmation, tout cela menant au projet d’agrandissement de la GAO
et de réaménagement de la Cour des arts. Les avancées faites au cours de la
dernière année témoignent de l’importante capacité d’évolution de la GAO
et constituent également une bonne occasion de faire valoir nos statistiques

EXPANDING THE OAG
AGRANDISSEMENT DE LA GAO
In the summer of 2015, construction began on the OAG Expansion
and Arts Court Redevelopment Project. This significant milestone
represented the culmination of many years of hard work, as board
and staff worked to “get it right.” The process began with an in-depth
consultation with our community. This phase led to the development
of a feasibility study, which has helped to shape the function and size
of proposed spaces and programs for the new gallery. Our homework
complete, the OAG embarked on a journey to select the right site
with the right partners and develop the right design for the gallery
expansion.
L’été 2015 marque le début des travaux pour le projet d’agrandissement
de la GAO et de réaménagement de la Cour des arts. Cet événement
d’importance représente l’aboutissement de plusieurs années de travail
acharné, au cours desquelles le conseil d’administration et le personnel
de la Galerie se sont assurés d’obtenir de bons résultats. Le processus a
débuté par une consultation exhaustive auprès de notre communauté.
Cette étape a mené à l’élaboration d’une étude de faisabilité, qui
a permis de déterminer la fonction et la taille des locaux et des
programmes envisagés pour la nouvelle galerie. La GAO s’est ensuite
mis à la recherche du site idéal et de partenaires, ainsi que du meilleur
concept d’agrandissement de la galerie.

including the Old Mill and the Canadian Pavilion on National Capital
Commission land.

BUILDING STRONGER RELATIONS WITH THE CITY

Over the last five years, the OAG and the City of Ottawa have
developed a strong, supportive relationship. Fundamental to this
relationship is the recognition that art and culture are key pillars to a
socially and economically heathy city. The City has clearly understood
that the OAG is both the keeper of the city’s artistic legacy and a
cultural hub.
Au cours des cinq dernières années, la GAO et la Ville d’Ottawa ont
développé une relation solide et solidaire. L’élément fondamental
de cette relation est la reconnaissance que l’art et la culture sont des
éléments-clés de la vitalité sociale et économique d’une ville. La Ville a
bien compris que la GAO est à la fois gardienne du patrimoine artistique
de la ville et un important carrefour culturel.

TELLING ARTISTS’ STORIES

In 2014, the OAG continued to increase its commitment to supporting
artists through all stages of their career. This support encompassed inhouse and touring exhibitions, publications, professional development
workshops, lectures and talks, studio visits, and art rental, sales and
acquisitions.
En 2014, la GAO a renforcé sa promesse d’engagement d’appuyer les artistes
à toutes les étapes de leur carrière. Cet appui passe par des expositions à
la galerie et en tournée, des publications, des ateliers de développement
professionnel, des conférences et des causeries, des visites d’atelier, ainsi
que la location, la vente et l’acquisition d’œuvres d’art.
Alma Duncan
Alma Duncan
She was a draughtswoman, unofficial war artist, filmmaker and abstract
painter. Until the OAG mounted an exhibition of her works, Alma Duncan
was not well known to Ottawa and Canadian audiences. In addition to this
exhibition, which celebrated the life and art of this significant senior artist,
the OAG also produced a 176-page hard-cover catalogue and staged
a three-venue tour (2015–2016). Together, these endeavours helped to
broaden and deepen Canadians’ understanding of Duncan’s art.
Elle était dessinatrice, artiste de guerre non officielle, cinéaste et peintre abstrait.
Or, jusqu’à ce que la GAO présente une exposition de son travail, Alma Duncan
était peu connue à Ottawa et auprès du public canadien. En plus de cette
exposition, qui célébrait la vie et l’œuvre de cette artiste majeure, la GAO a
également produit un catalogue de 176 pages à couverture rigide, et organisé
une tournée de l’exposition dans trois villes de l’Ontario (2015-2016). Tous ces
efforts ont permis aux Canadiens d’avoir une meilleure compréhension de
l’œuvre de Duncan.

Jinny Yu
She is rapidly gaining international attention for pushing the boundaries
of painting to include sculpture, installation and video. In this light, it was
important for the OAG to present mid-career artist Jinny Yu’s work within
a national and international context through the group exhibition Close
Listening: Eli Bornowsky, Jeremy Hof, Monique Mouton, Jinny Yu.
Repoussant les limites de la peinture en y intégrant la sculpture,
l’installation et la vidéo, Jinny Yu attire de plus en plus l’attention sur la
scène internationale. Il était donc important pour la GAO de présenter
le travail de cette artiste à mi-carrière dans un contexte à la fois national
et international, soit dans le cadre de l’exposition de groupe Écoute

Rémi Thériault
Rémi Thériault
He is a well-known commercial photographer in Ottawa. Yet, Rémi
Thériault’s own fine art practice is bourgeoning. In his first solo exhibition
Front at the OAG, Thériault explored battle sites from the First World
War by pushing past commemorative documentary photography into a
complex and layered exploration.
Ce photographe professionnel est très connu à Ottawa. Pourtant, la
pratique artistique personnelle de Rémi Thériault est en train d’éclore.
Dans sa première exposition solo, Front, présentée à la GAO, Thériault
explorait les champs de bataille de la Première Guerre mondiale
en explorant de manière complexe les nombreuses strates de la
photographie documentaire commémorative.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND BUILDING A LARGER CONNECTION
TO COMMUNITY
Over the last five years, the OAG has built capacity in its public programs
and community outreach activities in order to connect art to a broader
community. One program in particular, The Great-West Life OAG Art
Tent, clearly demonstrates our impact. The Art Tent has travelled across
Ottawa during this period, each summer building new partnerships with
festivals, fairs, community groups and drop-in centres.

NEW WAYS OF CONNECTING TO THE COMMUNITY
Five years ago, the OAG had a fairly static website and limited means
to get the word out through traditional advertising media. Since then,
we revitalized our website; added three web resources, including the
notable A.Y. Jackson: Art and Life in the Ottawa Valley; and increased
our social media presence in order to continue building engagement
with the public. From 2010 to 2014, close to 231,000 visitors logged
onto the website, and today the OAG has 4,168 likes on Facebook, 4,753
followers on Twitter and 558 followers on Instagram.

OAG’s ART Rental & Sales is a service that strives to promote local
contemporary artists through the sale, rental and exhibition of their work.
An important showcase for established and emerging artists, this service
regularly accepts original submissions for jury in all media. The revenues that
are generated are shared between participating artists and the OAG.
Le service ART Vente et location de la GAO vise à promouvoir le travail des
artistes contemporains de la région par la vente, la location et l’exposition de
leurs œuvres. Ce service constitue une importante vitrine pour les artistes
établis aussi bien qu’émergents, et il accepte continuellement des œuvres
originales de toutes disciplines à soumettre aux membres de son jury. Les

Le pARTy Art Auction is OAG’s premier annual fundraising event, produced
by our hardworking committee and led by co-chairs Leslie McKay and Amy
Jenkins. The $100,000 rasied supported the exhibition and educational
programming needs of the Gallery. In 2014, this highly anticipated event
attracted more than 300 guests. Sixty-five original works of art, produced
by some of the city’s most talented artists, were auctioned off. Guests also
enjoyed an Art Lover’s VIP reception and the opportunity to sample culinary
delights from a number of high-end caterers. The Critic’s Choice panel of
local visual art experts Sandra Dyck, Steve Loft and Jonathan Shaughnessy
chose five of the auctioned works to highlight.

L’encan d’art le pARTy est la principale activité annuelle de levée de fonds de
la GAO. Elle est menée par notre vaillant comité organisateur sous la gouverne
des coprésidentes Leslie McKay et Amy Jenkins. Les 100 000 $ recueillis ont
été versés au programme d’expositions et aux programmes éducatifs de la
galerie. En 2014, cet événement très attendu a attiré plus de 300 personnes.
Soixante-cinq œuvres originales créées par certains des plus talentueux artistes
d’Ottawa ont été vendues aux enchères. Les invités ont également apprécié
la réception VIP des Amoureux de l’art et l’occasion de goûter aux délices
culinaires proposés par plusieurs traiteurs haut de gamme. Les spécialistes en
arts visuels Sandra Dyck, Steve Loft et Jonathan Shaughnessy, responsables des
Choix de la critique, ont choisi cinq œuvres primées pour l’encan.
