Title:
Study of the use of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions for the development
of low-power consumption non-volatile logic circuits
Abstract:
The Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ), essential component in spintronics, is well known as the
elementary block of MRAM (Magnetic Random Access Memory), benefiting of intrinsic non-volatility,
immunity to radiations, high-speed, integration density and low-power consumption, and aiming at
becoming a universal memory. Recent researches have shown that these components could find very
interesting applications in the design of innovative logic components, including very low-power
consumption applications. Indeed, the addition of non-volatility in the logic circuits can allow cutting of
the power supply of unused blocks, thereby eliminating leakage currents, so that the static power
consumption and heating problems can be reduced drastically. This thesis is part of a project focused
on the study of the use of MTJ for logic. The PhD student will first consider architectures of elementary
logic functions (Full Adder for example) made non-volatile by the use of MTJ and evaluate their
performances by simulation using CADENCE. These functions could then be assembled with
non-volatile elements of memory (registers, Flip-Flops) to create a more complex circuit such as an
ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit).
