This product consists of calcined diatomaceous earth and small quantities of crystalline silica (less
than 1%). Prolonged breathing of dust containing crystalline silica may cause lung damage, and
on rare occasions be fatal. Avoid breathing dust (see Section 11 for additional information).

This product contains small quantities of crystalline silica, which is a known cause of silicosis, a progressive,
sometimes fatal lung disease. In a 1997 monograph (Volume 68, “Silica, Some Silicates, Coal Dust and Para-aramid
Fibrils”), the International Agency for Research on cancer (IARC) has classified “inhaled crystalline silica from
occupational sources” in Group 1 as a substance “carcinogenic to humans”. In making the overall evaluation, the
IARC Working Group noted that carcinogenicity in humans was not detected in all industrial circumstances studied.
A 1992 study by University of Washington researchers of certain diatomite workers reported an excess risk of nonmalignant respiratory disease (NMRD), Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR) of 2.59 and an excess risk of lung cancer
SMR=1.43. A 1996 follow up reported reduced risk with a SMR=2.01 for NMRD and a SMR=1.29 for lung cancer.
As noted in the 1992 study and supported in the follow up, relatively intense exposures to crystalline silica that
occurred before the 1950’s were probably the most important contributors to the excesses in NMRD and lung cancer.
A more detailed report discussing the IARC classification and the diatomite worker studies are available on request.

Ce produit renferme de petites quantités de silice cristalline, qui est une cause de silicose avérée, une maladie
pulmonaire progressive, parfois mortelle. Dans une mammographie effectuée en 1997 (Volume 68, Silica, Some
Silicates, Coal Dust and Para-aramid Fibrils – La silice, certains silicates, la poussière de charbon et les fibrilles paraaramides), le Centre international de recherche sur le cancer (CIRC) a classifié « la silice cristalline inhalée dans un
milieu occupationnel » dans le Groupe 1 comme substance « cancérogène pour les humains ». Dans son évaluation
globale, le groupe de travail du CIRC a noté que la cancérogénicité n’était pas décelée dans toutes les industries
étudiées.
Une étude menée par les chercheurs de l’Université de Washington sur des travailleurs du domaine des produits de
terre à diatomées a indiqué un accroissement du risque de maladie pulmonaire bénigne (MPB), un ratio standardisé
de mortalité (RSM) de 2,59 et une hausse du risque de cancer des poumons (RSM=1,43). Un suivi effectué en 1996
a démontré une baisse de risque avec un RSM de 2,01 pour MPB et un RSM de 1,29 pur le cancer des poumons.
Comme cela est indiqué dans l’étude de 1992 et corroboré par le suivi, les expositions intensives à la silice cristalline
survenues avant 1950 ont probablement été l’un des facteurs les plus importants ayant contribué à la hausse de MPB
et de cancer des poumons.
Sur demande, des rapports plus détaillés sur la classification et l’étude menée sur les travailleurs du domaine des
produits de terre à diatomées du CIRC sont accessibles.
