Patrick Brunelle, Interim Assistant Deputy Minister, Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones Patrick Brunelle holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history, with a specialization in government-Aboriginal relations. He began working for the Gouvernement du Québec in 2000 in the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale. In 2004, he joined the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones in the Ministère du Conseil exécutif as Adjoint au négociateur spécial (Assistant Special Negotiator) for the Gouvernement du Québec, where he was involved in the comprehensive land-claim negotiations between the Québec and federal governments and the Innu communities. Mr. Brunelle then became Adjoint exécutif of the sous-ministre adjointe (Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Minister) and coordinated numerous strategic files, including the file establishing the obligation of the Gouvernement du Québec to consult with Aboriginal communities. In 2009, he took up the position of Directeur des relations gouvernementales (Director of Government Relations) and subsequently became Directeur des négociations et de la consultation (Director of Negotiations and Consultation) in 2011. Following a brief stint in northern development in 2013, Mr. Brunelle returned to work on negotiation and consultation files at the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones. Last August, he was appointed Sous-ministre adjoint par intérim (Interim Assistant Deputy Minister) in this Secrétariat.
