GOAL
Varice surgery under local tumescent
anesthesia is not common. We have
evaluated the feasibility and short term
results of this technique. Follow-up was
carried out thanks to an innovative
"patient follow-up" software.
The goal of this study was to demonstrate the
feasibility and harmlessness of this kind of
anesthesia as well as to evaluate the quality
of postoperative recovery by using the data
collected thanks to the follow-up software
“Qualivein”.
M AT ERI EL AND M ET H OD
This bicentric prospective study regarding 603 patients and 707 surgeries was carried out from January 1st to December 31st 2014. All
the patients operated on for varices under tumescent local anesthesia with or without sedation and having a valid email address were
included. Postoperative data were collected thanks to a software that was sending questionnaires to these patients, starting on
Day 0 to Day 7 then from Day 15 to Day 30 and asking questions about pain, bleeding, functional capacity and satisfaction.

I n 77.7% of the cases, local tumescent anesthesia was carried out without any sedation. On average, 20 phlebectomies were
performed and in 48% of the cases, gesture on a saphenous trunk was carried out. There were no postoperative incidents. Postoperative
pain was very mild and the patients were very satisfied with these cares (surgery). In multivariate statistical analysis, age was a factor of
less postoperative pain, the use of sedation was a factor of greater postoperative pain.

Varice surgery under tumescent local anesthesia can be safely carried out with or without sedation. It gives excellent immediate results
in terms of pain and satisfaction. The evaluating data-processing tool that is used is a very useful and reliable medical data collection.
