Témoignage lors du décès de Dr. Eddy Maes

Notre collègue, le Docteur Eddy Maes, est décédé : il va laisser un grand vide, certainement
dans sa famille, mais aussi dans toute la communauté ophtalmologique. L’ophtalmologie
Belge perd une grande figure. Nous perdons tous un compagnon de route remarquable,
un vrai ami…
Eddy a été chef de service et bâtisseur du service d’ophtalmologie d’Ottignies, où il a réussi
une carrière exemplaire, en modernisant son service et en le dotant de la technologie la
plus avancée.
Mais je vais ici surtout insister sur son engagement de longue date pour la défense
professionnelle de l’ophtalmologie. Comme personne d’autre avant lui, il s’est investi
à fond dans la défense de notre profession, pour avoir une ophtalmologie meilleure et
abordable pour tous les malades.
Pendant de nombreuses années, il a été notre représentant dans diverses instances
officielles : à l’ABSYM, au Groupement Belge des Spécialistes, dont il a été le vice-Président,
dans l’Union Professionnelle des Médecins Ophtalmologistes Belges, où il a toujours eu
une place active au Bureau Directeur et où il a été un Président exceptionnel. Ses avis aux
réunions mensuelles du Syndicat des ophtalmologues étaient toujours respectés.
Il a aussi participé à d’innombrables réunions du Conseil Technique Médical, de
la Commission Monospécialisée et de l’INAMI. Son but a toujours été de soutenir
l’ophtalmologie et de faire avancer les dossiers qui nous concernaient.
Avec sa voix calme et basse, il arrivait à faire baisser le ton de ceux qui criaient le plus fort
et ainsi, en douceur et avec beaucoup d’humour, à forcer l’écoute pour exprimer posément
son point de vue. C’est Eddy qui a négocié toutes les nouvelles adaptations de notre
nomenclature des vingt dernières années.
Il était notre bible, notre bibliothèque et notre mémoire au niveau de la nomenclature, dont
il connaissait toutes les définitions, astuces et exceptions. Ses dossiers, méticuleusement
tenus en ordre, lui permettaient de s’y retrouver dans le labyrinthe de nos institutions
complexes et de conserver ainsi les informations qu’il recueillait.

Il était aussi l’élément modéré, humain et juste qui stimulait à fond notre belle profession
tout en lui gardant un aspect socialement acceptable. Ses fonctions de président du CPAS
à Rixensart témoignent de ce sens social.
Mais son engagement social dépassait les frontières de la Belgique : j’ai eu la chance, il
y a quelques années, de l’avoir comme bénévole deux ans de suite dans mon équipe de
missions cataractes au Congo à Kinshasa, et toute l’équipe a gardé un super souvenir de
la gentillesse d’Eddy avec les malades et de son expertise.
Devant une vie si bien remplie au service de la médecine, de l’ophtalmologie en particulier,
de ses patients, de la communauté, c’est avec beaucoup
d’émotion qu’au nom de tous les ophtalmologues, je présente à son épouse et ses enfants
mes sincères condoléances.

Cher Collègue,
La réunion annuelle d’AMICO a eu lieu ce 14/03/2015. Ce fut un
grand succès tant du point de vue nombre de participants que
qualité des exposés. Au nom de AOB, je remercie vivement les
sociétés scientifiques qui ont participé à cette réunion : SBO, BOG,
OBAO, BSA et PED LOW. Je remercie également nos partenaires
de l’industrie qui nous ont une fois de plus apporté leur soutien.
Le Comité Organisateur d’OB 2015 sous la présidence du Docteur
Joachim Van Calster travaille activement à l’organisation de notre
congrès annuel.
Le Professeur Patrick De Potter, trésorier de AOB et OB a soumis les
comptes 2014 à l’approbation du Conseil d’Administration de AOB :
la situation financière d’AOB est saine et comme par le passé, des
bénéfices seront distribués aux différentes sociétés membres.
Madame Verlaeckt et Madame Van Eycken ont quitté AOB et créé
une société indépendante d’organisation d’évènements avec laquelle AOB a signé un contrat pour l’organisation de OB, AMICO
et AOB Office.
Le Docteur Paul Jonckheere qui me succédera à la présidence de
AOB lors d’OB 2015, poursuit le difficile travail de modification des
statuts de AOB. Les nouveaux statuts devraient être présentés à
l’approbation de l’Assemblée Générale de novembre 2015.
Je vous souhaite déjà de bonnes vacances d’été et vous donne
rendez-vous à SQUARE pour OB 2015.

Beste Collega,
Het jaarlijkse congres AMICO ging door op 14 maart 2015. Het was een groot succes zowel
omwille van het aantal deelnemers als omwille van de kwaliteit van de voordrachten. In naam van
AOB wens ik de wetenschappelijke verenigingen te danken die deelgenomen hebben: SBO, BOG,
OBAO, BSA en PED LOW. Ik dank eveneens de industrie die ons eens te meer heeft gesteund.
Het organisatie comité OB 2015 onder het voorzitterschap van Dr. Joachim Van Calster werkt
aktief aan de organisatie van het jaarlijkse OB congres.
Prof. Patrick De Potter, penningmeester AOB en OB, heeft de rekeningen 2014 voorgelegd aan de
Raad van Bestuur AOB: de financiële toestand van AOB is gezond en zoals in het verleden zullen
de winsten van OB 2014 uitgedeeld worden aan de deelnemende verenigingen.
Mevr. Verlaeckt en Mevr. Van Eycken hebben AOB verlaten en een eigen bedrijf opgericht.
AOB heeft met het bedrijf een contract getekend voor de organisatie van OB, AMICO en AOB office.
Dr. Paul Jonckheere, die mij zal opvolgen als voorzitter tijdens OB 2015, werkt gestaag verder
aan de aanpassingen van de AOB statuten. Deze nieuwe statuten zullen worden voorgelegd aan
de AOB Algemene Vergadering in november 2015.
Ik wens u alvast een goede zomervakantie en geef u afspraak in SQUARE voor het OB 2015.

Anniversary Meeting of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis
The Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis is a university-centered international
organization committed to excellence in education, research and culturally appropriate
medical services to preserve and restore vision for people of the world. The AOI was
founded in 1975 by Professor Jules François in Ghent. To mark its 40th anniversary
it was decided to organize the 2015 meeting in Ghent.
This will be a two days meeting starting on Saturday June 13. It will take place in
Het Pand, Onderbergen, Gent. Het Pand was previously a Dominican abbey and is
now the faculty club of the Ghent University.
Members of the AOI are elected amongst the most distinguished ophthalmologists.
For Belgian residents and ophthalmologists this will be a unique opportunity to
meet some of the great names in our specialty. Residents and ophthalmologists are
hereby cordially invited to attend this very special meeting.

Clinical Courses (ICC)
Dear Colleagues,
As coordinator of the Interactive Clinical Courses (ICC), it is my pleasure to invite you to submit
an ICC for OB 2015. ICCs are a forum for a more elaborated presentation of a clinical topic.
The course should be didactic, practical and interactive. All submissions will be reviewed by an
academic panel from different universities.
Each topic will be presented by two or three speakers coming from different teams. The duration of each ICC, discussion included, will be 90 minutes.
It is strongly recommended to prepare a handout summarizing your ICC which will be given to
the participants! An evaluation form will be handed at the end of each ICC.
The online submission opens on May 1 and submission deadline is on June 1.

Onze praktijk is opgericht in 1990 en is gevestigd in Brussel, waar zich ook
ons laboratorium bevindt. Elke week zijn wij ook persoonlijk werkzaam in
Antwerpen, Gent, Charleroi en Luik.
Afgaand op de cijfers van het RIZIV wordt 50% van alle protheses in België
door onze praktijk gerealiseerd. Niettegenstaande dit succes volgen wij
elk jaar een voortgezette opleiding tijdens het congres van de American
Society of Ocularists en met trots kunnen we vermelden dat wij een van
enige twee Europeanen zijn met een diploma van Board Certified Ocularist,
wat in dit domein de hoogste graad is in de Verenigde Staten.
Wij vervaardigen protheses op maat voor alle types oogaandoeningen:
enucleatie, evisceratie, aangeboren anoftalmie of microftalmie, onesthetisch oog, niet-functioneel oog (sclerale lens).

committed to saving eyesight. We work hard
to reach and serve the poorest and most
marginalized people in African communities,
and to ensure that everyone, regardless of their
income, has access to quality eye services.
Blindness and poverty form a vicious circle. Blindness causes
poverty and it is often the poorest people who go blind due to
a lack of treatment. Approximately 90% of visually impaired
people live in developing countries. Alleviating blindness is
an effective way of alleviating poverty.
Half of global blindness is caused by cataracts. LIGHT FOR
THE WORLD helps by providing prevention and treatment
for cataracts. LIGHT FOR THE WORLD focuses on the
comprehensive treatment of cataract blindness, but we also
tackle other causes of blindness and visual impairment,
including glaucoma and refractive error. With the support
of LIGHT FOR THE WORLD, our local ophthalmologists
performed 17.810 operations last year.

Het ziekenhuis heeft een capaciteit van 268 bedden (heelkunde, inwendige ziekten, intensieve zorgen, kinderen jeugdgeneeskunde,
kraamafdeling/neonatologie, geriatrie, PAAZ) en 48 bedden en 31 zetels dagziekenhuis, een erkende functie gespecialiseerde
spoedgevallen-, MUG- en Intensieve Zorgenfunctie. Ambulante zorg wordt aangeboden in de polikliniek te Heusden-Zolder en het Medisch

NAAM VAN HET GENEESMIDDEL LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml oogdruppels, oplossing, in verpakking voor eenmalig gebruik
KWALITATIEVE EN KWANTITATIEVE SAMENSTELLING Eén ml oplossing bevat 0,3 mg bimatoprost. Voor de volledige
lijst van hulpstoffen, zie rubriek 6.1. FARMACEUTISCHE VORM Oogdruppels, oplossing, verpakking voor eenmalig gebruik.
Kleurloze oplossing. KLINISCHE GEGEVENS Therapeutische indicaties Vermindering van verhoogde intraoculaire druk
in chronisch open kamerhoek glaucoom en oculaire hypertensie bij volwassenen (als monotherapie of als aanvullende
behandeling met bètablokkers). Dosering en wijze van toediening. Dosering De aanbevolen dosis is eenmaal daags één
druppel in het (de) aangetaste oog (ogen), ‘s avonds toegediend. De eenmaal daagse dosis mag niet worden overschreden
aangezien frequentere toediening het effect van de intraoculaire drukverlaging kan verminderen. Uitsluitend voor eenmalig
gebruik, één verpakking is voldoende voor de behandeling van beide ogen. Ongebruikte oplossing moet onmiddellijk na
gebruik worden weggegooid. Pediatrische patiënten: De veiligheid en werkzaamheid van LUMIGAN bij kinderen in de
leeftijd van 0 tot 18 jaar zijn nog niet vastgesteld. Patiënten met lever- en nierfunctiestoornissen: LUMIGAN is niet onderzocht
bij patiënten met nier- of matige tot ernstige leverfunctiestoornissen en dient daarom met voorzichtigheid te worden
gebruikt bij dergelijke patiënten. Bij patiënten met een geschiedenis van milde leveraandoening of abnormale alanine
aminotransferase (ALT), aspartaat aminotransferase (AST) en/of bilirubine baseline, had bimatoprost 0,3 mg/ml oogdruppels
(formulering voor meervoudige doses), oplossing gedurende 24 maanden geen nadelig effect op de leverfunctie. Wijze
van toediening Wanneer er meer dan één topisch oftalmisch geneesmiddel wordt gebruikt, dient tussen de verschillende
toedieningen minstens 5 minuten wachttijd te zitten. Contra-indicaties Overgevoeligheid voor de werkzame stof of voor
(één van) de in rubriek 6.1 vermelde hulpstoffen. Bijwerkingen In een klinische studie van 3 maanden kreeg ongeveer 29%
van de patiënten behandeld met LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml voor eenmalig gebruik bijwerkingen. De meest frequent gemelde
bijwerkingen waren conjunctivale hyperemie (meestal zeer licht tot mild en van een niet-inflammatoire aard) bij 24%
van de patiënten en oogpruritus bij 4% van de patiënten. Ongeveer 0,7% van de patiënten in de groep met LUMIGAN 0,3
mg/ml voor eenmalig gebruik is gestopt met de therapie ten gevolge van bijwerkingen in de studie van 3 maanden. De
volgende bijwerkingen werden gemeld tijdens klinische experimenten met LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml voor eenmalig gebruik of
in de periode na het in de handel brengen. De meeste waren oculair, mild en geen ervan was ernstig: Zeer vaak (≥1/10),
vaak (≥1/100, <1/10), soms (≥1/1.000, <1/100), zelden (≥1/10.000, <1/1.000), zeer zelden (<1/10.000) en niet bekend
(kan met de beschikbare gegevens niet worden bepaald); bijwerkingen worden voorgesteld volgens Systeem/Orgaanklasse
in tabel 1. Binnen iedere frequentiegroep worden bijwerkingen gerangschikt naar afnemende ernst.

Bij klinische studies zijn meer dan 1.800 patiënten behandeld met LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (formulering voor meervoudige
doses). Wanneer de gegevens van Fase III monotherapie en aanvullend gebruik van LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (formulering voor
meervoudige doses) worden gecombineerd zijn de meest gemelde bijwerkingen: - groei van wimpers bij maximaal 45% in
het eerste jaar met de incidentie van nieuwe gevallen afnemend tot 7% na 2 jaar en 2% na 3 jaar. - conjunctivale hyperemie
(meestal zeer licht tot mild en waarschijnlijk van een niet-inflammatoire aard) bij maximaal 44% in het eerste jaar met de
incidentie van nieuwe gevallen afnemend tot 13% na 2 jaar en 12% na 3 jaar. - oculaire pruritus bij maximaal 14% van
de patiënten in het eerste jaar met de incidentie van nieuwe gevallen afnemend tot 3% na 2 jaar en 0% na 3 jaar. Minder
dan 9% van de patiënten zijn gestopt in verband met bijwerkingen in het eerste jaar met de incidentie van additioneel
staken door de patiënt van 3% na zowel 2 en 3 jaar. Extra bijwerkingen die tijdens een klinische studie van 12 maanden
met LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (formulering voor meervoudige doses) werden gemeld, staan vermeld in tabel 2, echter met een
hogere frequentie dan bij LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (voor eenmalig gebruik). De meeste bijwerkingen waren oculair, mild tot
matig en geen ervan was ernstig.

Bijwerkingen gemeld met fosfaathoudende oogdruppels: Bij sommige patiënten met significant beschadigd hoornvlies
werden zeer zelden gevallen van corneale calcificaties gemeld in samenhang met het gebruik van fosfaathoudende
oogdruppels. Melding van vermoedelijke bijwerkingen: Het is belangrijk om na toelating van het geneesmiddel
vermoedelijke bijwerkingen te melden. Op deze wijze kan de verhouding tussen voordelen en risico’s van het geneesmiddel
voortdurend worden gevolgd. Beroepsbeoefenaren in de gezondheidszorg wordt verzocht alle vermoedelijke bijwerkingen

DÉNOMINATION DU MÉDICAMENT LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml, collyre en solution en récipient unidose COMPOSITION
QUALITATIVE ET QUANTITATIVE Un ml de solution contient 0,3 mg de bimatoprost. Pour la liste complète des excipients, cf.
rubrique 6.1. FORME PHARMACEUTIQUE Collyre en solution en récipient unidose. Solution incolore. DONNÉES CLINIQUES
Indications thérapeutiques Réduction de la pression intraoculaire élevée chez les patients adultes atteints de glaucome
chronique à angle ouvert ou d’hypertonie intraoculaire (en monothérapie ou en association aux bêta-bloquants). Posologie
et mode d’administration Posologie La posologie recommandée est d’une goutte dans l’oeil ou les yeux atteints une
fois par jour, administrée le soir. La dose ne doit pas dépasser une instillation par jour, un usage plus fréquent pouvant
diminuer l’efficacité sur la baisse de pression intraoculaire. Ce produit est à usage unique. Chaque récipient unidose suffit
pour traiter les deux yeux. Tout produit inutilisé doit être jeté immédiatement après utilisation. Population pédiatrique : La
sécurité et l’efficacité de LUMIGAN chez les enfants âgés de 0 à 18 ans n’ont pas encore été établies. Patients présentant une
insuffisance hépatique ou rénale : LUMIGAN n’a pas été étudié chez les malades atteints d’insuffisance rénale ou d’insuffisance
hépatique modérée à sévère. En conséquence, il doit être utilisé avec précaution chez ces patients.Chez les patients ayant
un antécédent de maladie hépatique mineure bénigne ou des taux de base anormaux d’alanine aminotransférase (ALAT),
d’aspartate aminotransférase (ASAT) et/ou de bilirubine, aucun effet délétère sur la fonction hépatique n’a été observé avec
le collyre (flacon multidose) contenant 0,3mg/ml de bimatoprost sur 24 mois. Mode d’administration En cas d’utilisation
concomitante de plusieurs médicaments ophtalmiques à usage local, chacun doit être administré à un intervalle d’au moins
5 minutes. Contre-indications Hypersensibilité à la substance active ou à l’un des excipients mentionnés à la rubrique 6.1.
Effets indésirables Dans une étude clinique sur 3 mois, environ 29 % des patients traités par LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml en
récipient unidose ont rapporté des effets indésirables. Les effets indésirables les plus fréquemment rapportés ont été une
hyperhémie conjonctivale (la plupart du temps minime à légère et considérée comme étant de nature non inflammatoire)
chez 24% des patients et un prurit oculaire chez 4% des patients. Environ 0,7 % des patients du groupe traités par LUMIGAN
0,3 mg/ml en récipient unidose ont dû arrêter le traitement en raison d’un effet indésirable survenu au cours des 3 mois
de l’étude. Les effets indésirables décrits ci-dessous ont été rapportés pendant les essais cliniques sur LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml
en récipient unidose ou après la mise sur le marché. La plupart étaient oculaires, d’intensité légère et aucun n’était grave.
Les effets indésirables très fréquents (≥1/10) ; fréquents (≥1/100 à <1/10) ; peu fréquents (≥1/1 000 à <1/100) ; rares
(≥1/10 000 à <1/1 000) ; très rares (<1/10 000) et de fréquence indéterminée (qui ne peuvent pas être évalués sur la base
des données disponibles) sont classés dans le tableau 1, conformément aux classes de systèmes d’organes. Au sein de chaque
groupe de fréquence, les effets indésirables sont présentés par ordre décroissant de gravité.

Dans les études cliniques, plus de 1 800 patients ont été traités par LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (flacon multidose). En regroupant
les données des études cliniques de phase III de LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (flacon multidose), en monothérapie ou en association,
les effets indésirables les plus fréquents étaient : - croissance des cils jusqu’à 45 % la première année avec une incidence
de nouveaux cas réduite à 7 % à 2 ans et 2 % à 3 ans, - hyperhémie conjonctivale (la plupart du temps minime à légère et
considérée comme étant de nature non inflammatoire) jusqu’à 44 % des patients la première année avec une incidence
de nouveaux cas réduite à 13 % à 2 ans et 12 % à 3 ans, - prurit oculaire jusqu’à 14 % des patients la première année avec
une incidence de nouveaux cas réduite à 3 % à 2 ans et 0 % à 3 ans. Moins de 9 % des patients ont dû arrêter le traitement
en raison d’un effet indésirable la première année, avec une incidence d’arrêts supplémentaires de 3 % la deuxième et la
troisième année. Le Tableau 2 répertorie les effets indésirables constatés lors d’une étude clinique sur 12 mois réalisée sur
LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml (flacon multidose) et rapportés plus fréquemment qu’avec LUMIGAN 0,3 mg/ml en récipient unidose.
La plupart étaient oculaires, d’intensité légère à modérée et aucun n’était grave.
